The “Water Cooler” is a feature on Claycord.com where we ask you a question or provide a topic, and you talk about it.

The “Water Cooler” will be up Monday-Friday at noon.

Today’s question:

A few years ago, schools in the MDUSD used to end summer break after Labor Day, but now, they return to school before Labor Day.

Which one do you prefer? Do you think summer break should be a few weeks longer?

Talk about it….

school should begin after the Labor Day. Students and teachers need longer break to enjoy life.

Yes, but I also think having a week off in October is incredibly stupid, so what do I know?

Now-a-Days, … it really is a matter of just making sure the students are getting an education.
Too much was lost and time to gain it back.

Growing up, School year was written in stone. Always: First day was the Tuesday after Labor day and Last day was the Friday before Memorial day. You got a week off for Thanksgiving, A 4 day weekend for Easter and A Week to 10 days off for Christmas. Period. We had to study, full time they had to teach full time. Never changed, no confusions, no bs delays because they hadn’t hired enough teachers… It was a perfect plan.

The reason it changed to before Labor Day is because of the other holidays during the year. People were taking their children out of school before and after the other holidays so they had to give more time to those holidays. In return the summer got smaller because of the time taken off during the school year. Students must be 180 school days.

Or, just imagine… the school year is xxx till xxx = 9 months with 3 holiday weeks spread out mid term time off.
Either your kids + Paid Teachers and Paid Staff were in school doing their jobs, or they were Absent/Truant. There’s a big reason grades and scores have dropped from 1st or 2nd place in the world down to 18 or 19.
Teachers love that time off they blame on the parents.

After – specifically start 9/15 – end 6/15 (or very close to it) and no 2 weeks off for holidays, snow days (gimme a break), etc. – time off the week of Thanksgiving, the week of Christmas, and cut the “teacher days ” in half… I’ve heard what they do during those days

We home school and decide when and how to teach. Public schools no way ever..
