The Water Cooler – Do You Prefer The Beach, Mountains Or The Desert?

The “Water Cooler” is a feature on Claycord.com where we ask you a question or provide a topic, and you talk about it.

The “Water Cooler” will be up Monday-Friday in the noon hour.

QUESTION: All are within a few hours drive of Bay Area residents, so which one do you prefer if you had to take a day trip? The Beach, the Mountains or the Desert?

Mountains. I can be alone and I don’t have to listen to everyone talk about politics and why they are right. Yeah, politicians have your best interests in their minds. Sorry, alone in the mountains with no electronics.

@Big A ~
Agree, …Mountains & no electronics is so peaceful.
A walk on a sandy beach barefooted with only a few people is also pleasant for me.

@ROZ I agree. I love the beach also. Finding parking, trash, and to many people are the only reason I chose the mountains over the beach. Parking where I go in the mountains is everywhere. Actually, you’d be hard pressed to find another car.

it’s a place up in Humboldt it’s on the coast with mountains right there. I’ll take that spot

Depends on the time of year. During the winter months, the desert is nice. I can enjoy Death Valley, and the Mojave Desert. The Great Basin Desert in Nevada isn’t as hot and can be enjoyed anytime of the year. They are so quiet and peaceful, and there won’t be anybody around for miles. The mountains are good all year, sun, or snow. The ocean beach is OK for a day visit, to walk around on the sand, enjoying the day. Lake and river beaches are more for the folks that enjoy sunbathing with a little swimming thrown in, but lying around under the sun doing nothing but burning isn’t my idea of fun, I like to keep moving. If I had a boat, spending a day on Lake Shasta would be fun.

Given where we are for a day trip, beach – but actually the desert is gorgeous, but please not on a hot day… and usually noooobooodddy out there

Toss up between the coast and mountains. I’ve been to Joshua Tree Park, and to the desert in Arizona, it is different and I liked it, but most of the time it is too hot to enjoy being outside. Here in the Bay Area, I have hiked the Point Reyes shore, The Dip Sea Trail to Stinson Beach, camped on the Sonoma Coast Line, and also in Mendocino, also camped by Big Sur and have been by car to Carmel and all the way down to Morro Bay.
I have hiked Tahoe several times, also gone cross country skiing there, have hiked in Yosemite more than 10 times, been to Mt. Shasta. Spend many fall weekends in the foothills, Sonora, Columbia other littel town there.
When I lived in Benicia I had a view of the water from every room in my condo, really loved that, suppose that is the viking in me.

Beach in the tropics. Mountains sometimes. Desert? Technically I grew up in the “Great Desert”.

For a day trip I like the mountains. If camping, I’ll always take the desert.

Not fond of winding roads or higher elevations.
Love the sights and sounds of the beach.

Mountains.

The beach, especially in Kauai. I also love the mountains. Not the desert.

The most beautiful place we’ve ever been is none of the above: the Gieranger Fjord in Norway, but not too far behind that is the Icefields Parkway between Banff and Jasper in Alberta, Canada in the Canadian Rockies. One of the most beautiful beaches we’ve ever visited is Haukland Beach in the Lofoten Islands of Norway, above the Arctic Circle.

Yosemite is very special, my favorite part being Tuolumne Meadows in the spring. The Dolomites in Italy and the Swiss Alps are also spectacular. Then there are the rolling hills of Tuscany, the northern Italian lakes (Orta, Como and Garda especially), Glacier National Park……..so many places to love, so little time.

The mountains, for sure. I love visiting the beach for a few days, but the mountains have it all, solitude, activities, cooler weather, wildlife. The mountains are calling, and I must go.

Part of my childhood i lived in a village, sorrounded by all these fruit trees, creeks, farm animals, etc. I then moved to the capital for a few years where life was fast pace. I then lived in a small town where you could just walk everywhere no driving needed, walk to school, church, hospital, grocery store etc. As a teanager I lived in north oakland (worst place I have ever lived), then San pablo city, not so bad but still not the best. And now concord.
I have experience diferentes places and for sure the village, surrounded by hills and mountains, no electricity, no water was the one that impacted me the most and will always love! Really the simple life!

Crisp ocean air blowing thru my hair, toes in the sand and an ice cold drink in my hand, while bikinis walk by and I smile, wave and say, “Hi.”

Beach…you get to intake all those wonderful negative ions….
