Do you know how Republicans put out a fire? They get out a pale water and put it out!
Demos try to put out fires a different way:
The first analyzed if it is a fire, then…as the fire spreads, they have to explore what the root causes might be, and if it involve some sort of inequity or imbalance of something- then, as the fire gets bigger and bigger.. they decides that whatever factor caused it, needs to be factored in all the more. The fire’s roaring bigger and bigger, and they need to do more studies and then also start blaming Republicans. Then as the fire is burning out of control, they start their procedure all over again.

This why studies, analysis, encounter groups and charities are created, they provide millions of fake jobs that do nothing productive.

Sam:

Which part of government is organized crime: the folks who send me my Social Security check each month or the fire department which showed up at our house five minutes after we called? Or maybe it’s the librarians.

The folks I’ve known who worked for the Federal government (Department of Energy, Federal Reserve, Council of Economic Advisors) have all been decent honest people with no political agendas other than finding the truth and doing their jobs.

If you think that government is organized crime why vote for anyone. Other than when I lived in Oakland, I’ve had mostly positive experiences with the government. I can barely imagine what sort of experience you must have had to make you so sour on our country and its government. My life experiences have been more positive, I guess.

Cyn, Black Knight, and Whenwill:

When Sam said that “Government is Organized Crime” he didn’t specify which part. And that is what I am disagreeing with. Certainly there are plenty of problematic aspects of government. BART seems to be an employment agency for ne’er-do-wells. The PUC seems to be run by PG&E. The CIA and NSA have gone rogue on more than one occasion. But to say that “Government is Organized Crime” is a bit of an overstatement.

I don’t think there are any politicians on the left or right who are trying to emulate Oakland. And my life will remain good no matter who is elected in November: I love my wife, I’m retired, our house is paid for, and I don’t live in Oakland anymore. None of that changes in November.

Regarding the administrative state – they aren’t going anywhere. These are the civil servants who work for both Democratic and Republican regimes and keep the wheels going. These folks have civil service and union protections and it is – for better or worse – almost impossible to get rid of anyone.

The three people I knew in the Federal Government are\were just normal people, mostly doing research and pushing paper. You would actually laugh if you knew just how un-sinister they are. I miss you Dad! You were only slightly sinister.

City, County, State Federal~~~~ there is One government employee for every Seven people in the USA.
Do you think the people really need that magnitude of “care?” Could One government employee maybe be required to handle the affairs of, say Ten people?
Would their department implode from the shear magnitude of that extra requirement?

@I’m New Here. When Someone depends on confiscation of Other People’s Money (by way of taxation) to pay for their own personal needs, wants or just gotta have one of those, ANY waste is criminal. It might seem to be a minor issue to those who can afford to pay for someone else’s trinkets, but to those who just manage to squeak by ~~~ governmental BLOAT is not minor.
It is criminal.

Rico you might want to check your facts, New findings from the Monthly Abortion Provision Study show that an estimated 1,037,000 abortions occurred in the formal health care system in 2023, the first full calendar year after the US Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization overturned Roe v. Wade. This represents a rate of 15.9 abortions per 1,000 women of reproductive age,* and is a 11% increase since 2020, the last year for which comprehensive estimates are available. It is also the highest number and rate measured in the United States in over a decade

The biggest threat to our country and our children’s future is the democratic party and their media. The Biden, Harris administration lied every time they were in front of a microphone and all their media outlets supported the lies and the simple thinking Dem voters didn’t care that they lied. Harris failed at her job at the border and is nothing but an empty suit. Anyone with a brain knows that. Ask any Democrat voter what did Trump do to hurt this country in the 4 years he was president? Then ask what did Biden do that hurt this country in the last 3 and a half years? Afghanistan, over 10,000,000 illegal immigrants in our country, 20% inflation, double that for food, wars starting in the middle east, rampant crime…….All the facts. Democrat voters don’t care about our country’s future. They just hate Trump. Sad

There are 3 reasons for the DOJ finally admitting this:
1. It allows them to pretend that they are tough on crime, right before the election. They can say with a (almost) straight face that “Nobody is above the law”.
2. Joe can still pardon Hunter as long as a conviction happens before January’s change of administration. They will try to speed this trial along.
3. This is a message to the public that Joe is now persona non gratis and that Kamala is the new Dear Leader. Similar to old Rome where the new Emperor had the old Emperor’s likeness chiseled off of statues and buildings.

It’s hard to express the embarrassment of a society that is so brainwashed and spoon fed their narrative and directives. The USA is the laugh of the world right now. The whole “omg, she’s a woman, oh, and sorta kinda black, and such a role model for our young women” is nauseating. She slept her way into politics with a married man, can’t form a sentence that makes any sense, can’t tell you where any country is on a map, and has a track record of VP like – well – nothing. “When a well-packaged web of lies has been sold gradually to the masses over generations, the truth will seem utterly preposterous and its speaker a raving lunatic.”–Donald James

The Board of Supervisors meeting this week held an update of Covid by health department Roth who recommended masks be worn indoors in crowded spaces. It was interesting to watch the theatrics by Roth putting on her black mask intermittently as she spoke while sitting in a petri glass surrounded chamber with a colleague who did not fashion one…oh the kabuki theatre! One public speaker, in person, spoke of how the vaccines are causing harm, VAERS and what data are they using to still make recommendations…and Supervisor Gioia quickly called her question mis-information and asked the Health Officers to respond, which they did quoting using recommendations and data from CDC, FDA, and HHS—no referenced reports or concrete information backing up their sewage, I mean waste water increase of the current ‘particularly infections strain of covid-19 FLiRT!’
.
The public speaker was made out to be a raving lunatic by Supervisor Gioia when in reality it is free speech. Those that quote misinformation to stop public discourse are a threat to our First Amendment rights.

I said it at the beginning when Trump picked JD Vance that he should have picked DeSantis or Ramaswamy, they both have what it takes to get things done. Vance was a war correspondent, and I have nothing but respect for them. We had a correspondent with us in our helicopter when we were being shot at, bravely sticking his head out taking photographs.
What sickens me about JD Vance is the way he has been denigrating Tim Walz for his military service. I don’t know much about Walz, but I do know he served 24 years with honor, then decided to run for Congress. He appears to be a WOKE liberal, and I certainly do not agree with any of his politics, but I respect him for his patriotic duty to serve his country, in uniform, and in Congress. One thing a veteran should never do is disparage another veteran to make themselves look better or for political gain. JD Vance has tarnished his own reputation when he attempted to belittle Tim Walz with his remarks about stolen valor. I sincerely hope Trump rethinks his choice for VP.

There isn’t any honor in a military veteran denigrating another military veteran for political gain. My comment isn’t about stolen valor, it’s about the disparaging comments that came out of JD Vance’s mouth. Personally, I think Tim Walz, has a couple of loose screws, but I can put my personal feelings aside and respect his service to our country. I do not dislike or hate Americans just because they have a different political viewpoint than I do.

Dawg-
Any veteran who sees an individual stealing valor has an OBLIGATION to point it out until it is corrected.
Lying about your rank or service for personal gain is disgusting. It doesn’t matter if you put on a fake uniform for a military discount at a diner or to run for Congress. The valor thief is stepping on the memory of many thousands of veterans, living and dead. This has nothing to do with political leanings and everything to do with besmirching the very people who came before and performed their duty honorably.

Sorry professor, I do not agree. I don’t know your background, or if you ever served in the armed forces in a time of war, I have. There is a bond, we trust and depend on each other, we don’t rat each other out. JD Vance, a veteran, has demonstrated that he will do anything to make himself look better than his opponent. This is something every politician does, but with veterans, it’s like ratting out your brother, and for that I do not trust him. Walz lied when he was talking about banning assault weapons and said they are weapons of war, the same weapon he carried in war. The AR-15 is not, and never has been, a weapon of war, and the military does not issue AR-15’s. It was a lie for political gain. I do not trust him either, and I think he is a flake, but he did serve 20 years in the National Guard and retired. Following the terrorist attacks on 9/11, Walz reenlisted, and in my opinion that was an honorable and patriotic move on his part. Walz should not have lied about weapons of war, and Vance should have kept his mouth shut. Two wrongs don’t make a right.

The Professor August 12, 2024 - 12:24 PM - 12:24 PM

Dawg, you are missing the point. Which is worse, lying about your military rank and record or seeing someone lying about their rank and record and then calling them out for their lies?
“JD Vance, a veteran, has demonstrated that he will do anything to make himself look better than his opponent”- One thing he won’t do is pretend he was something he was not while in the armed forces. Looks to me that Walz will do anything to make himself look better.

Would you rat out your brother if he killed an innocent? Raped someone? Stole something in the barracks? I would. Would you call your brother CSM if he was only a MSGT? How about if he called himself General?

Good for Walz and his military service. 20+ years is to be commended. However, stealing valor for any reason needs calling out and a public correction. Vance is doing the press’ job in calling out Walz’ military service lies.

US Army, ’89-93. E-5 when I got out. No combat experience, even during Desert Storm, as I was stationed in the US and my unit never went (Air defense artillery unit. There was no air threat so we didn’t go.)

How would Governor Ron DeSantis or Vivek Ramaswamy “get things done” if they were the Republican vice presidential candidate or sitting Republican vice president? The only reason Governor Ron DeSantis has been able to “get things done” in Florida is because he’s had a near Republican supermajority or a Republican supermajority in the Florida State Legislature, that’s not Washington, D.C.

JWB is quoting a paragraph from the book “Hillbilly Elegy” that Vance wrote back in 2016, about the poor people in his childhood community.
JWB omits the explanation that it is part of a story and isn’t something Vance is pitching as part of his campaign.

Couple of clarification to Jellyfinger.
.
1) Hillbilly Elegy is about the poor people of Appalachia. Vance did not grow up in Appalachia. He grew up in a suburb of Cincinnati, which is not Appalachia. His home town Middletown is considered middle class.
.
2) Hillbilly Elegy is not “a story Vance wrote”. According to the author it’s a memoir of Vance.
.
3) Here are some further references to Obama by Vance in a 2016 interview:
.
“When people read Breitbart every single day and convince themselves that Barack Obama is a foreign terrorist, that is not a problem of government. That is a problem of community failure and we have to recognize that.”
.
“The institutions of conservative media have existed for a long time but they haven’t taken quite the conspiratorial tone that they have over the past four or five or maybe 10 years. This willingness, for example, to believe that 9/11 is an inside job, to even give credibility to somebody like Alex Jones, to believe that Barack is a foreign alien—I don’t think that has as much to do with racism, especially the 9/11 inside-job talk, as it does with a fundamental mistrust of institutions that people used to believe in. Is there a racial element to it? Absolutely, but there’s something about, Why don’t people believe what the media tells them anymore?”

I don’t care what cuckoo Obama BS Vance wrote about his Kenny McCormick upbringing, in fact I thought there were worse things to quote than that line you dug up from his book (or more likely copped the quote from another lefty) but I really don’t care to quibble about those small details… like Bush, when he was young and stupid he was young and stupid.
The movie (which is awful) is currently on Netflix and is easier to watch than to drag out the torture by reading the book….. YOU should read the book!
As far as I’m concerned Vance is Luke and Trump is Yoda…. he gets 4 years to prepare Vance to do the job, if he’s ready in 2028 he will get my vote, if not he won’t.
BTW – Kamala is JarJar Binx.

I find it strange, the high level of anger in the politics section. I’m assuming many of you are my age and financial status. Which is to say retired comfortably.

Since retiring and leaving California I have never been happier in my life (including my 20s and 30s). My happiness is in no way related to who is President. If Trump is elected, I’ll do fine. If Harris is elected, I’ll do fine. I’m not overly concerned with what other folks do as long as they stay out of my face and off of my lawn dammit. So vaccine deniers, drag queens, anti-maskers, and Pro-Palestinian protesters don’t affect me in the slightest. I’m certainly not going to base MY happiness on what other people do or think, as long as they aren’t hurting anyone.

I’m not Pollyanna; I realize that political choices and elections have consequences and effects on the country and individual. Which is why I’ve voted for the last 50-ish years. And I will do so in November. But on the day after the election, I will still be feeling great, no matter who the new President is. Because my happiness doesn’t depend on which way the wind is blowing that day.

I’m new here- I too will be fine after the election, but my adult kids and grand children and great grand child won’t if the democrats win. Vance said something that I also believe. Single people don’t worry about the future as much as people with children. Our children are are future. That future looks bleak with the liberal platform. Walz is closely aligned with Harris. OPEN BORDERS, defund the police. He let whole blocks of of his city burn for days during the Floyd riots. Harris let the rioters out of jail with out bail. Gender change for kids of any age! No restrictions on abortion thru the 9th MONTH. And –the most dangerous, he loves China. China is a heartbeat away, trying to infiltrate this country any way they can. He also put tampons in boys bath rooms-how crazy stupid is that! Our country would be changed forever. Not for the better–and I didn’t even mention inflation, but when they get rid of fossil fuels that will also increase more! This is the most important election of my life. God help us if we let evil win!

I guess I’m less concerned about worst case scenarios. After the election there will still be a country with about 50% Republicans and 50% Democrats (+-). People in the middle and people on the further left and right. No Democrat I know wants what Max is suggesting, and I doubt that any of those things happen, regardless of who is elected President.

I’m not overly worried for my kids either. We raised them as well as we could and they are educated (and employed) and intelligent kids who will also do fine regardless of who wins the elections. They are also voting for Kamala Harris, so clearly they are not overly worried either.

Regarding the future for my kids (and nephews and nieces) I am more concerned about the environment, and I think Harris will do a better job in that regard. We’ve been breathing some awful wildfire smoke in Oregon (and in California, I believe) and Trump seems to be more interested in removing environmental regulations rather than bolstering them. I’d like my family to be able to breath. Less worried about tampons in boy’s restrooms.

The cheering crowd you see at the Harris/Walz campaign have also been hired. Scott Sterrett, who is the founder of the design company Tandem, said in an interview, that he co-created the materials for AOC’s first congressional campaign, in 2017, with designer Maria Arenas. They have been designing the Harris/Walz campaigns, and placing a cheering audience alongside and behind Harris and Walz. The audience is paid to show their enthusiasm.

Good article in today’s New York Times with byline by Maggie Haberman and Jonathan Swan. They report that the Trump campaign is on its heels, and the inability to adapt to the high energy Harris/Walz campaign is the fault of Trump himself.

Given that Trump is infamously illiberal (google the word), my take is that he is incapable of adjusting given that this campaign is thin on policy (with two or three exceptions) and intensive on personal attacks (which have been focused on Biden for the last couple of years).

Trump and Trumpism are going down big. He is going to be trounced in November. Hopefully the MAGA movement will die, and that the Republican party will return to being a functioning conservative force.

Clayton News Update! An Incumbent Has Not Submitted the Necessary Paper Work to Seek Re-election.

As of 5 p.m. yesterday, Friday, August 9, 2024, an incumbent did not turn in paperwork to run for re-election and the deadline has now been extended to Wednesday, August 14, 2024, at 4:00 p.m. for anyone else to file. Click here to learn more. http://www.claytonwatch.org.

NO EXCUSES,
.
Many people won’t run against an incumbent, so when an incumbent doesn’t file to run in the initial filing period, then the deadline is extended by 5 days to allow others to file to run.
.
If nobody else runs, then the only candidate that filed will likely win, unless someone runs a successful write-in campaign against the only other candidate.

Now, here is an interesting data point. According to New York Fed’s Survey of Consumer Expectation the three year ahead inflation expectation is now down to 2.3% which is the lowest value since the New York Fed started this survey in 2013.

At least Dems and Reps can agree on a few things. Like no taxes on tips.
Kamala was the tie breaking vote for 2022 legislation that gave the IRS $80 Billion to police the reporting of tips on your 1040. Now she’s openly stealing Trump’s idea of a 0% tax rate on gratuity.
Rumor now has it that her next policy balloon will be banning abortion and building the wall. (sarc)

Your second point is garbage for his followers, First of all the Canon decision will be reversed and he couldn’t even file this frivolous lawsuit until the DOJ responds to his notice to file.
Your third point you might want to check with Ron Paul who had this idea in 2007 well before Trump claimed it.
