Think about this,
if Mideast ends up in a war, which is possible if giggles becomes president, what happens to price of fuel in CA. Keeping in mind there are NO crude oil pipelines from continental US into California.

Trump loses support every time J.D. Vance opens his mouth. And he will lose business and “real person” support if he keeps talking tariffs. No one wants to pay additional taxes on their purchases. Tariffs will kill the U.S. chip industry (and probably other industries as well), and will make places like Walmart unaffordable to all but the wealthy.

Speaking about cheap Chinese goods, and how appliances used to last longer–I replaced my 37 yr old hot water heater last year when it started leaking just a little bit. Replaced with a 12 yr guaranteed new one. My refrigerator is 27 yrs old. My oven is –oh dear-57 yrs old, and a clothes dryer is 30 yrs old , but they still work! Vance, to be fair, most of the comments made by him, which have been deemed “controversial” by our corporate media, in large part because our corrupt corporate media hasn’t given any context or played a larger portion of his speeches which better explain his “controversial statements,” are from the past and not necessarily what he’s been saying now on the campaign trail.

I don’t necessarily believe we should have tariffs on all goods, but we should probably have targeted tariffs. President Biden has kept many of former President Trump’s tariffs on imported goods. He actually even increased tariffs on some products, as he did with Canadian softwood lumber, where President Biden more than doubled former President Trump’s Canadian softwood lumber tariff from 8.99% to 17.99%. While the importer pays the tariffs to the U.S. government, the importer and exporter can, and often do, negotiate who will actually pay the tariffs, the importer, the exporter, or both. As we’ve seen before, a tariff on goods doesn’t always equate to an increase in prices or may equate to an increase in price smaller than that of the actual tariff, because the larger the corporation, such as Walmart, the easier it is for them to absorb all or a portion of the cost of tariffs. Both sides, Democrats and Republicans, are guilty of imposing tariffs. You can always avoid those tariffs by purchasing American made goods.

I grew up with economists in the family, and spent far too many years of my career working and talking every damn day with economists – academic, banking, pension managers, real estate, and other. I also took a course or two in econ in college and have read twenty or thirty books on investing in the fifty years since. You will not school ME on anything economics related. Sorry.
Tariffs are essentially a tax on imported goods which the consumer (you and I) pay. In theory it will result in more goods being made in this country, but until we have a lot more manufacturing infrastructure, the result will be far higher costs for imported goods.
You are absolutely right about the quality of American made goods from the golden age; they lasted forever, worked well, and often looked really cool. I love that stuff. But Sam, they don’t make much of that quality stuff anymore. I buy American when I can, but with most things it is just not possible. So Trump’s tariffs will hurt the lower-middle and middle class far more than I think you think.

It’s absolutely possible to avoid buying cheap chinese imported junk. Does it take effort? Yes. Does it cost more? That’s debatable. Yes the short term, but if it lasts longer than no. I have clothes made in the USA that last 10 times as long and import. So if it costs 3-4 times as much as junk, it’s cheaper. Very simple.
