Big Lots announced the closure of 40 stores throughout the United States, including the ones in Concord and Fairfield.

The stores will shut down within a matter of weeks.

The company said inflation, cost of goods, and competitive and economic pressures led to “substantial doubt” of their store operations.

No surprise….every time I went there – there were very few shoppers ….take that and the theft – there gone!

With family budgets stretched so thin there is very little or no discretionary income available to spend. Expect more business closings of businesses that rely on discretionary spending.

Yup.. Bidenomics has seen the average person’s expenses go up almost 30% in the last 4 years! We’re sure feeling the pinch!

Unfortunately, another retail store bites the dust.

I was wondering when that might happen. 😶

I used to shop there often, but hadn’t for a long time. Stopped by in 2023 and was shocked to see how expensive everything was. Same prices I would pay anywhere else. Never went back.

They must have lost a fortune on stolen shopping carts, I see them all over, and it’s mostly the homeless pushing them around filled with all their belongings.

First it was the ninety-nine cent store, now Big Lots. Lotta bargains in those places, if you’re willing to look. Best ginger snaps in town.

The economy is going great, just ask Joe.

The economy is doing just fine. Just look at the data.

CONCORD GUY,
.
You should know by now that it doesn’t matter how good economic data appears to be for there to be a “good economy,” it matters when the population feels the economy is good, and right now polling data has continuously showed that the population doesn’t feel the economy is good. The almost 20% inflation that we’ve had over the last 42 months and the increase in interest rates is what has driven the populations perception of there being a bad economy, good economic data won’t change that perception.
.
Just as when we have a recession, the economic data usually indicates a recession before the population feels it and economic data indicates a recovery before the population feels it. It’s the same right now.
.
You’ve made it pretty clear that you dislike former President Trump. If former President Trump was still our president right now, would you still be touting how good the economy is, based on current economic data?

The economy is not doing just fine and the data has been manipulated.

You’re right… when Big Lots, and 99 Cent Stores can’t make it, it shows that even the bottom rung stores don’t have the business they need because the public is hurting economically and can’t even afford to shop at the cheap places.

Hate to see Big Lots go. They were at times a go-to-store to make your dollar go farther, but like many other stores during these times of Bidenomics, they can no longer stay in business. It also doesn’t help when thieves either can’t or won’t be prosecuted because of current laws that were disguised by politicians to the voters.

SO SO sorry to hear this! It’s been my favorite go-to store for years!! Absolutely love it and can always find what I want or need!!!

Never have been there.

Then you’re not a Concord guy.

I had not been there in a while. I went in there this past weekend and found that aside from their bigger ticket items like furniture, there was a lot of dollar store quality items priced at $7-10. No wonder they are closing stores.

In it’s its filing, Big Lots pointed to declining revenue due to a drop in net sales, along with prolonged sales slides across Big Lots’ home furnishings division. The pullback in consumer spending amidst inflation hit hard in the first three months of 2024 and shadows expectations for the year. But the media tells us the economy is doing well? I guess they told us the president was doing well but then everyone saw it differently recently.

I would go there just every 3 month or so. I shop a lot of discount stores, I go to Grocery Outlet at least once a week, also Dollar Tree. However, I found a few things at big lots that had favorable prices. Laundry detergent, and Dr. Teals Espsom salt product, bath salt, foot cream ect. Also found some nice and attractive non prescription glasses for about $8.00. They are a little out of the way so that is why I only go every few months. Also some of the stuff I can get at other stores, the Epsom salt, often DollarTree have it, or CVS there own brand often on sale, and I always have some CVS coupons. At times at Big Lot’s I find something that I didn’t see at other stores. However, since I only go every few months, not a big loss.

This chain is having trouble staying afloat. Apparently another 89 of their stores posted closure notices today.

That place has always been run down. Unkempt , dirty, not enough employees, and prices were really not anything different than what you’d pay at Target. No surprise there.. plus the Monument corridor has such a bad reputation. It really needs a makeover.

I read an article that said more than likely they will file bankruptcy by the end of the year. The inventory at my local Big Lots is sparse at best and when I first moved here it had better stuff than the on in Concord or othe bay area locations
When you can get items cheaper on-line than at places like Big Lots, Walmart, Target etc closures will happen.
Was in Kohls today and they wanted $27 for a mini waffle maker that I got on-line for $11 a couple of months ago.

Only good thing about Big Lots was that they were close to El Faro!

Point the accusatory finger at Amazon.
