ANGELA SALINAS,

The Concord City Council won’t allow or approve a Walmart☆ to open within the City of Concord. There have been several attempts by Wal-Mart Stores Inc. to open a store in the City of Concord over the last 30 years. Each incarnation of the Concord City Council has shot down and squashed efforts by Wal-Mart Stores Inc. to open a store in Concord each time the matter has come before them, due to the damage a Walmart☆ store does to small businesses in the cities where they’re located and due to the pressure put upon the council by the United Food & Commercial Workers Union (UFCW).
To add to that if I may. Target was declined because they are a now in the Food/Grocery department and Lucky is as well Being Lucky is already in the shopping center, they declined Target for a conflict of interest? Go figure, I guess.
USA JIM,

Target has the option of not selling groceries in all of their stores. They probably have a number of stores where they aren’t able to sell groceries.

Not likely to get a permanent tenant. Kohls would be good. Sadly, only retail stores that don’t sell groceries are allowed because of Lucky being in the same area. Otherwise, I’d enjoy seeing a Target.
Yeah, Patrick, Target chose to put groceries in their Walnut Creek store. If they chose to forego a grocery section, they could share a parking lot with Lucky. It’s their choice.
Bob, I don’t disagree, but a lot of folks would like to see Target there, and that’s the only way, at least for now. I’m not sure that would be a good location for them, especially without groceries, and I haven’t seen any indication that Target is even interested in that location.

The difference is union pay, healthcare, and other fringe benefits versus non-union pay, no or limited healthcare, and no or limited fringe benefits.
That is not my concern.
Affordable pricing is.
I was a Teamster for years but not by choice, I don’t agree with Unions or any of that philosophy, and it is often abused by members who play the system.

No permanent long term tenant until political stability and regulatory certainty return to California. DEMs and their unelected minions have amply demonstrated they can not be trusted to be business friendly. Companies have and are moving their headquarters OUT of California and expand operations outside of California.
DEMs latest was $20 minimum wage which resulted in an estimated loss of 10,000 food service employees. Use of employer dollars to buy worker votes, DEM just did to food service worker what they did to farm worker last Century, made human labor more expensive than automation.
DEM politicians, dullest knife in the drawer.

Let the ‘why don’t they put in a Trader Joe’s’ posts begin…
Of course there will be a permanent tenant! But they just won’t pay rent, utilities, etc. Just imagine the homeless tents you could put in that store!

The old K-Mart should be turned into a satellite county jail.

Unfortunately, this location is unlikely to attract another large retail store like Kmart. If this location is able to attract tenants again, the space is most likely to be broken up into multiple smaller retail space storefronts, where multiple small and/or medium size retailer stores take over the space. Also, any retail stores going into this space will most likely be discount retailers.
.
It’s unfortunate what has happened to our retail industry. I think the government should consider changing the law for most small and medium, and some large non-grocery brick and mortar retailers, depending on where they’re located, so that they don’t have to pay income tax on earnings from their retail brick and mortar storefront locations, and instead the government should just look at these businesses as being job creators and employee income tax generators. This would be one way to save, incentivize, and spur brick and mortar retail growth.

We have been hoping for a Target in this side of town. NOT Walmart.

You must not been to the Target in Walnut Creek as they have a Grocery section in their store.
Yeah, Patrick, Target chose to put groceries in their Walnut Creek store. If they chose to forego a grocery section, they could share a parking lot with Lucky. It’s their choice.
But,, Likely Target has a HARD time being profitable, without groceries..

BOB,

Unlikely, tradionally the profit margin on groceries is rather low.
Target’s grocery prices put the supermarkets to shame. It’s kinda nice not to get gouged everywhere you shop.
I don’t disagree, Doc, but as long as Lucky has veto authority, whoever goes into the KMart space will not sell groceries.
