Gov. Newsom Signs Law Allowing Restaurants And Bars To Charge Service Fees

Those 3, 5 and 20% fees at the bottom of your menu could be here to stay. With little time to spare, a new law will allow restaurants and bars to continue charging service fees, healthcare costs and other surcharges when listed clearly for diners to see. The practice was set to be outlawed beginning Monday.

On Saturday, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed Senate Bill 1524, an emergency measure to exempt California food and beverage vendors from Senate Bill 478 — a law that goes into effect in July and targets ticket sellers, hotel and travel websites and other businesses that charge “hidden” or “junk” fees.

So you’re saying we should put limitations on businesses in order to prevent excesses… right?

Where in that comment did Anon advocate for limitations on business? I comment I read has Anon foregoing patronizing restaurants and objecting to high costs of living and high taxes. How about you just read what’s written?

Why do restaurants place fees? Just be honest and raise your menu prices. The fee thing is just to dupe the customer who may not see it.

I know it’s not nice to wish ill will on anyone, but I wish Newsom’s own restaurants would start suffering, and have to close! But apparently the liberal elites democrates still have alot of money.

Seems fair to me. Any tip will be reduced by a percentage equal to the service charge. And I will make the server aware of it at the same time I’m made aware of the service charge.

How ironic, after Newsoms COVID lockdowns when 30% of California restaurants closed forever. Now he is throwing the rest of them a bone for their support by increasing prices to California customers. What’s he gonna do next for the fired fast food workers with his $25.00 an hour with
Benefits mandate. What a total sleazeball!

Pig Newsom just wants to destroy California then the USA. He’s a total psychopath. This certainly won’t help the restaurant industry whether a small locally owned cafe or a chain. This is like a totally unbelievable horror film. What else can he do to make our lives worse? 😡

All those hidden fees … so they bring you with the promise of a $11.99 meal and then hit you with $20 in ‘service fees’.

These service fees should be posted in an obvious place on their website and on the menus and on the front door so that customers know what they are walking into, but I can almost guarantee that Newscum wants those fees hidden.

These types of short-sighted decisions are the basis for the birth of the term “bong hit”.
As in, “Only a bong hit would support this”.

DEMs in charge don’t live like we do, they don’t bat an eye when it comes to effects of inflation.
.
As proof U.S. Treasury Secretary janet yellen.
During an interview, “Yellen – who is worth about $20 million –
said she goes to the grocery store ‘every week’ and isn’t shocked by the prices.”
https://tinyurl.com/28pb5f9f
.
‘Hey Janet Yellen, here is why Americans ARE feeling the effects of inflation
in the grocery store even if you aren’t’
https://tinyurl.com/2p9b37xz
.
newsom, you think he can relate to what we go thru trying to keep a roof over our family and food on the table? Or how bills he signs into law will effect us financially?
He’s worth 20 MILLION DOLLARS.

Eat and drink at home.
Greasy Gavin doesn’t even know that honest law abiding hard working middle class responsible California citizens even exists.
The only thing that will ever affect him is what can benefit him monetarily, or politically.

Are the service fees taxable?

Reply
T-Rex July 1, 2024 - 8:21 AM - 8:21 AM

Once people start subtracting the service charge amount from the tip amount I’m sure the restaurants might second guess their actions when all the servers leave for a place that doesn’t have them. Or just raise the cost on the menu instead. People won’t complain as much if it’s just built into the price.

Tommy Texas July 1, 2024 - 8:53 AM - 8:53 AM

With this new law, will any of these extra fees or charges be clearly stated BEFORE you sit down at a table to order — or will they be a surprise AFTER you get your bill?

This is more of Bill Dodd’s work. He seems to hate Californians and humanity in general. What a jerk! He also took away the exemption for pure fruit juice bottles for CRV fees. The exemption was given for packaging of 100% food products such as 100% juice (no added sugar).

Ill just keep eating at home, after COVID in early 2020 I havent eaten out at a sit down restaurant more than 10 times and they all seemed over priced as it is for the sub par service with a service fee on top of it. The service
really turned me off, and doesnt make me want to return any more and will continue. Good job restaurant service industry for making me make more food at home, lost a lot of weight also during that time.

We’re going backwards, there’s a set minimum wage in effect
how about, no forced service fees, and stop taxing the tips.
