This is a ticket stub from “Net Day ’96”, which was an event that kicked off a drive to connect California public schools to the internet, 28 years ago this year.
On March 9, 1996, President Bill Clinton and Vice-President Al Gore visited Ygnacio Valley High School in Concord, and spoke to the crowd.
Did anybody out there go to the event?

Back when Al Gore invented the Internet; and later he invented boiling oceans.
I remember the morning with helicopters flying around. I lived down the street but didn’t bother getting up.
I was there as a teenager. Bill Clinton had the softest handshake i have ever felt..
Al Gore told me all you have to do is go to Google images & search any celebrity name you wish, then type the word “naked” behind it…. and voilà !
See? It works.
I knew you’d all try it.
I was there in person. They had snipers on the roof watching over the crowd. Just thought it was cool at the time. Really surprised a President and Vice President would be there together.
I remember when Vice President George H.W. Bush also visited YVHS during the 1988 presidential campaign. Not long before his visit he was at an event where he forgot the words to the Pledge of Allegiance. At the event a visiting student from MDHS asked him if he knew the Pledge of Allegiance? He didn’t answer the question and the student repeatedly yelled “He didn’t answer the question,” until some Secret Service Agents went over to her and forced her to stop yelling. It made national news. I believe Governor Michael Dukakis visited Pleasant Hill and spoke at DVC during the 1988 campaign, too.
I remember it well!! It was an exciting day for Central Contra Costa County!!
I actually attended Northgate High 2 and a half miles down the road, and many were unhappy that Northgate was not chosen for it because Northgate was/is considered a “better school”, as it was at that time that Ygnacio Valley High was going through major changes, a part of which were attributed to Northgate being opened up 22 years earlier, as Northgate opened in 1974 as Northgate was built to relieve major overcrowding at Ygnacio Valley High at that time, as when Northgate opened up and the new attendance boundaries were drawn, it just happened to be the more affluent Ygnacio Valley families who Northgate took away.
I dod not know if it is true, but supposedly the only reason why YVHS was chosen for the Clinton/Gore visit was because of George HW Bush’s visit there 7 and a half years earlier as Vice President when he (George HW Bush) was running for President, as it was actually in the early and mid 1990s when YVHS was starting to go downhill, which was also attributed to the sociological changes in Concord’s Monument Blvd. area.
At YVHS I learned how to write without run on sentences.
COGGINS SQUARE,
.
Vice President George H.W. Bush visited Ygnacio Valley High School as a favor to his Chief of Staff, Craig Fuller, who was a graduate of YVHS. Craig Fuller wanted one job in the G.H.W. Bush administration, and that was Chief of Staff, but Bush gave that position to Governor John Sununu of New Hampshire, which turned out to be a huge mistake! The visit by President Clinton and Vice President Gore in 1996 wasn’t tied to the visit by Vice President Bush the 1988 presidential campaign.
I lived off Treat Blvd. near Countrywood Shopping Center. I walked down my street to Treat Blvd. shortly after it was closed to regular traffic. I stood with maybe a dozen other neighbors and as motorcade came thru and it slowed enough so we could actually see President Clinton. He waved at us as they passed.
I remember Pres. Bush visiting as well and went to see Pres. Ford outside of, then Bullocks Department Store .
Can you imagine if Trump got caught doing what clinton did to a 19 year old intern?
I was the band director at YVHS during this. The visit by GHWBush AND by Clinton and Bush were exciting events. Clinton and Bush took the time to greet the band members and shake the hands of the students! I’m sure my students remember that day!
