Free Summer Meals For Children In Contra Costa County

by CLAYCORD.com
16 comments

This summer, no child should go hungry in Contra Costa County as agencies team up with the United States Department of Agriculture’s SUN Meals program to offer free breakfast and lunch to kids ages 2-18 at various locations throughout the county.

The free summer meals are available to any child aged 18 and under, no application or other information needed.

The Contra Costa County Office of Education (CCCOE) has compiled a list of free meal locations and other local food resources to assist families during the summer break.

“As food prices continue to rise, I hope families can take advantage of the Summer Food Service Program to help feed their families and stretch their grocery dollars during the summer months,” Contra Costa County Superintendent of Schools Lynn Mackey said. “Several school districts are working with the USDA and community partners to provide free, convenient meals and snacks for kids during the summer at schools, parks, libraries, and other neighborhood locations.”

Libraries serve as convenient and safe places for kids to receive meals while also offering a range of activities and resources to keep kids engaged over the summer. Once upon a time a very similar summer kids’ lunch program was a real blessing for us. Good luck and enjoy.

They’re not free – we’re paying for them …. is there a vetting process to ensure those that truly deserve the meals are getting them?

Are we, as a society, in a place where we should be upset that our fellow people ask for and receive food? If a person asks for food, we should feed them.

What would a vetting process look like? Who “deserves” a meal?

Many of my students will use this program because they need it. I am proud that the state is providing the funds for the programs.

These meals are for children under the age of 18. If we get mad about kids asking for food, we have a big humanity problem.

I agree with DOMO’s sentiment, although I would state it differently, I think there should be a vetting process to ensure those receiving “free” meals are truly in a financial state to need them, rather than they or their parents gaming the system. Do you understand how much COVID fraud there was at the expense of the taxpayers?

@Rollo,

One thing about families that need food is that they need food. The people going to these places for food are probably not gaming anything. I’ve assisted at my site by handing out food. The families that show up are in need and grateful for the support. Stop by the Monument Crisis Center and volunteer to bag food for families. Hunger is a major issue in our community, and I am glad my tax dollars support my community in feeding our people.

MDUSD TEACHER,
.
I believe the problem some people have with this isn’t whether the food is “asked for and received” but “offered and received,” where those “receiving food” may not be “in need.”

If someone is willing to ask for a handout of food then I’m not inclined to make them prove that they are eligible for the donation. It’s not a cash handout.

Nothing is free but I had this in the early 80″s at Riverview intermediate school and was a wonderful thing. A stop gap between hungry and not. Life is better now but glad it was there.

I have no problem feeding someone who is truly hungry. It’s the right thing to do, but I see a lot of kids in this county who should be on some kind of diet and not feeding them to the point where obesity is in place.

You should see all the food that goes to waste at these schools sites. I’ve seen garbage can’s full of food thrown out.

It looks like DEI is working.

I’d rather feed the children in the USA than give trillions of dollars to Ukraine! This is how are hard earned tax dollars should be used here and not on foreign lands!

I wonder if they still do “Buddy Packs,” where they send food home with the kids for the weekend?
