The number of homeless people in Contra Costa County increased by 18.5% in 2024, according to a report released this week by Contra Costa Health.

The annual point-in-time survey is done by the county’s health department and focuses on counting Contra Costa County’s homeless population on a single night.

In 2023, the count was 4% higher than in 2022.

The team and its community partners, including hundreds of volunteers, canvassed across the county to count the number of people living in emergency shelters or outdoors on Jan. 24.

The preliminary findings showed 2,843 people were without housing during that 24-hour period, including 1,959 people who were unsheltered.

In 2022, the count showed 2,277 honeless people.

This year’s count said 56% of those counted were 25 to 54, 29% were over 54, 7% were under 18, and another 7% were 18 to 24.

The count showed 61% were male and 38% were female; 39% were white, 33% were black, 15% were Hispanic, and 9% were of mixed races.

The area with the most homeless people was Antioch with 413, followed by Richmond with 388, Concord with 173, and Martinez with 158.

The night of the count, 39% of the people contacted were sleeping outdoors and/or in a tent, followed by 31% in emergency or transitional housing, 14% in cars, 11% in a recreational vehicle, and 5% in a van.

Curious how many lived in the county before becoming homeless? Or are they here from outside the county?

Or outside of the state. California has 33% of the national homeless population,
but it has only 11% of total population. Obviously there are free busrides to our
state from who knows where. An 18.5% increase is pretty staggering. Not likely
to be home grown.

Nowhere else gives these people more free stuff than CA. From stipends, to medical, free food, to allowing them to steal from every store without prosecution. Heck. We even give them free needles. Of COURSE we attract them from other states.

Nice list of statistics but the most important question was not answered…..
probably wasn’t even asked.
“Where are you from?”
More often than not the answer isn’t California.
Keep passing out cheese then act all surprised when more & mice keep showing up.

California has 1/3 of the country’s “unhoused”.
Feed them and they will come 🤪
We can thank NewSCUM and “poopie pants” Biden.

Here is what I don’t get, the state has spent 25 B on homeless. CCC is the third biggest county in the state and we have 2843 homeless. So if the state wanted to provide housing, food, utilities, mental health and so on, let’s just guess about 125,000 per person a year, or 350M for all of them.

How much did CCC get out of the 25B?

Sounds like a lot of people getting rich off the backs of poor. Nothing new.

NSDT

The government falls all over itself giving the homeless free stuff paid for by taxpayers.

The majority of the homeless are freeloaders. They need to be held responsible for themselves like any other human being.

Cut off the free goods,

There is no excuse for most of the homeless to get away with being irresponsible.

Can’t blame it all on out of state people. Consider all the job layoffs with not much hiring. Consider the cost of rents and what it takes to buy a home. No job, no mortgage, no down for rent. Can’t see why anyone would move here just to live in a tent or their car. The lucky ones have a trailer.

Thanks Gavin Newsom!
But, like the others above have mentioned, where are these people from? I found that a lot of homeless are coming here from other places because we’re such an easy tap. I know because I have asked them. In a nice way and try to guide them. Just like Walnut Creek that now has a lot of homeless ( not as much as conquered of course) Most have been attracted to the city of because of the services offered).. And I’d say that at least 80 percent are just plain lazy moochers. Don’t try to tell me about mental illness – it’s all drug induced.

Times are hard for many. While it is easy to generalize and assume, we may never know everyone’s real story. This is a tough time to be alive. We all have struggles and challenges. Be kind.

Let’s see, how did it go in that movie? Oh ya: ‘Build it and they will come’.

Jeez people, don’t forget we went through a screwball pandemic that put many people out of work and many have still not recovered. Yes there are jobs out there but who would want to go back to work in a place where you might pick up some strange virus or have a sassy boss pushing you around. Times have changed with this “new abnormal” (also known as dystopia).

Hows about we blame DEM politicians and their unelected minions.
Ever noticed DEM’s solution to problems, usually of their own creation, is to throw vast sums of your taxpayer dollars at them. An why shouldn’t they YOU never hold them accountable and keep electing them.

They’ve created a homeless industrial complex with little oversight.

No matter how you slice it, the vast majority of the dollars spent went to the bureaucracies overseeing the homey….id be surprised if even 5% went to the homeless.

To me, that’s just plain fraud….just like the EDD fraud. Why in h311 do people elect financial criminals to office? And why aren’t the politicians held accountable?

It’s simple. Homelessness has become big business!

People fall on hard times and that sucks and we need to do something about it “I do not know what, no good at politics” but the influx (my opinion only) is for services then take down the bird feeder.

How many of them are in the country illegally, and how many of them are on the streets because they didn’t have anywhere to go when Newsom granted them an early release from prison?

35

Doesn’t take a brain surgeon to figure that one out, just by driving around…..

14

I missed the statistic on how many were offered help and how many accepted or declined.

23

These stats do not suprise me one bit. Seems the County has no idea who is in charge, left hand doesn’t know what the right had is doing I’m sorry to say specifically regarding housing.

12

“Homelessness Has Increased 18.5% In Contra Costa County Since 2023” WOW, just think … If Contra Costa County had a 18.5% increase in homelessness every year for the next 25 years …then we would probably have homeless encampments on every street corner and Contra Costa County would look like a dump. Something needs to change!

19

Homeless Industry thriving on our tax dollars.

No official will talk about the 2M (at least) illegals in California and what the impact is on our housing stock. 15 illegal guys can cram into an apartment, and split the rising rent costs, where a single senior, vet or disabled person can’t on a fixed income. Guess who gets the short end of the stick. Our citizens do.

Nothing pays like helping the poor.

Perhaps they should become Farm Workers and Good Old Uncle Sam will give them money for housing.
