Book report: sixth Column, Robert A. Heinlein, 1941, 1949. So after the invasion and total takeover of America there is only one hidden secret science military compound left. One major to run the place, to plan how to retake control of the USA, and do it with a crew of non-military type officers. Step-1 – The scientists have discover a multi-powerful, multipurpose, stealth weapon but need to figure out what it does, how to use it, and not kill of the installation while trying. Step-2 – How to get it started in such a way that the invaders don’t know anything about it or even really notice the buildup. Step-3 – Invent a religion that “respects” the invader but pulls in Americans for training in the new type of weapons. This book sort of outside Heinlein’s usual writing. It is funny for the most part. But it was written as proscribed by the editor/publisher. So also consider the year it was written, there is an excess amount of anti-Asian dialog that takes away from some of the fun and funny areas.

Thematically it sounds similar to The Moon is a Harsh Mistress – wherein a war breaks out between the inhabitants of the moon and Earth. It along with Starship Troopers are by favorite Heinlein books.

TGIF! Shout out to the guys working at Encina Bike Center.
I purchased a used bike from a 2nd hand store a week ago. The kids that worked there disassembled it and basically threw it in my car. I spent 4 days figuring how to put the tire back on.

Yesterday, I headed down to the bike shop with 10 minutes of closing, they were extra helpful and showed me the proper way to thread the brake wire. They put the bike back together, did a little adjusting, sold me a helmet and I was on my way!
So thanks, we appreciate you.

They rock. I bought a mountain bike there about 22 years ago, rode it for 3 months, and then left it to rot in my garage. Literally unmoved for over 20 years. I recently found out they offer lifetime free tune-ups (for bikes purchased from them) so I took it in and they got it basically brand new. I paid for new tires, but that was it.

B and D here too. Just had some corn muffins this morning. I’m not sure what makes a northern cornbread different but what I grew up on was like the southern mixes I buy. I used to get corncakes at iHop but the last time I was there (probably over a decade ago) they weren’t on the menu anymore. They mixed corn kernels in with pancake.

“Southern wheat that is harvested and turned into flour is typically soft wheat, while its Northern counterpart is more likely to be hard wheat. Anyone who has had a traditional Southern biscuit can attest to its tender texture, which is due in part to the use of soft wheat flour” – Food Republic

Try ordering “White Lily” brand flours available thru Amazon & Walmart.
White Lily is made of soft wheat grown in the South.

I’m aware of that and for years I baked using Trader Joe’s whole wheat pastry flour made from soft wheat. Soft wheat is available at the local stores but is of course more expensive. But I’m not sure of the effect of using it to make corn bread or muffins. After all, the corn meal needs to take the precedent. I think S explains below what the real difference is.

@DR. JELLYFINGER ~
Thank You for that Information, … didn’t know.
But, I have and do use White Lily for some baking.

I’ve tried it and had great results, but it is pricey and I’ve never seen it in local grocery stores. I ordered it online from Amazon.

‘morning Capt’
Southern is a heavier bread made with bacon grease; best cooked in a good old fashion cast iron skillet.
Closer to Corn Pone; which I prefer overall.
You won’t find the recipes in any healthy eating guides…

YUM !

speaking of cornbread….
leftovers makes great french toast, or…
break it up into a glass, little buttermilk and sugar…
and like Capt B mentioned, the batter makes delicious pancakes………
can anyone tell, I’ve had more than enough coffee already today…..

IF we have leftover cornbread, I like to slice it in half, lightly butter each side, and toast it in the toaster oven. Then I pour some maple syrup over it for a special breakfast treat.

What is “leftover cornbread”?

You’ll notice I prefaced with “if.”

No….. I did not notice that.
Excuse my foxpaws.

No Rent control, go sign petition today Saturday.

Gas back at $5.00 and $6.00, headed to $7:00 in some places, but have not heard much about it.

After the initial shock of high prices, it comes down a little a people are happy again, then they creep it back up…

We should be screaming again!

Once the price of gas goes up, it never comes back down. In the 60s, when the average price was 28 cents a gallon, gas stations would have “gas wars.” They would sell their gas cheaper than neighboring gas stations, prompting them to lower their prices also, sometimes for as little as 20 cents a gallon. Right before the oil embargo of 1973, gas was about 35 cents a gallon, during the embargo, it jumped to 60 cents a gallon, by 1979 it was over a dollar, and has been on the rise ever since.

Buy some stock in these oil & gas companies and be happy!

Or invest in a drug dealer operation, they have no morals, conscience or dignity either… just pure greed.

Another store that closes at 8pm so they can all get to bed like most 4th graders.

Or at 7PM PST if one doesn’t really observe DST which messes up the body’s biorhythms. The sun has the big effect on biorhythms not arbitrary clock hands. 😁
