A Concord resident was charged for allegedly assaulting a DEA officer, federal prosecutors said.

Based on an indictment, Joel Dowen, 44, was charged with one count each of mailing threatening communications with intent to extort, and assaulting a federal officer with a deadly weapon, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of California said in a statement.

The indictment also charges San Francisco resident Micah-Luc Almeida, 45, with one count of possession with intent to distribute 3,4-methylenedioxyamphetamine, commonly known as MDA.

Prosecutors said both Dowen and Almeida are also charged with one count of conspiracy to manufacture, distribute, or possess with intent to distribute MDA.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Dowen had originally been indicted on one count of mailing threatening communications with intent to extort on Jan. 9.

“We will protect our federal law enforcement partners when someone harms or threatens them merely for doing their jobs,” said United States Attorney Ismail J. Ramsey.

“The defendants here are charged with serious crimes, and I am proud of the work being done by this Office to bring them to justice and safeguard everyone in the Northern District of California, including those sworn to protect us all.”

If convicted, Dowen faces a maximum statutory sentence of 20 years in prison on each of the three charges against him, while Almeida might serve the same statutory maximum sentence of 20 years in prison on each of the two charges on which he has been indicted.

Prosecutors said Dowen’s next court appearance is scheduled for May 3. Dowen has been in federal custody since his arrest on Jan. 17 and has been ordered detained pending trial.

I guess photos are top secret. Sounds like a silly case. Threatening communications sounds like someone got their feelings hurt.

What? Are you kidding?

Not really. Threatening communications could easily be subjective (meaning feelings). The idea someone would try and extort federal officials sounds like a stupid hollywood movie. A couple mdma pills..come on please. Assaulting a cop could be yelling at him or her, I didn’t see a battery charge.
.
I could be wrong but 60 years for what I’m seeing is far out. Maybe they are over charging, but last I checked they are legalizing mushrooms and other drugs and if it’s not even real mdma it may not even be illegal.
.
I really don’t see this adding up to 60 years, there must be much more. For the prosecutor I would hope. Sounds like a trumped up case

PO’D,
.
MAGA SAM and I agree on extremely few things, and even though I don’t necessarily agree with his entire comment, I have to ask why it is that you seem to believe what appears to be nothing but a biased and one-sided press release from a Federal Prosecutors Office, which obtained these indictments using the biased and one-sided Grand Jury system?

That’s about the quality of post we have come to expect .

FRANK,
.
You posted that you basically found the comments posted by MAGA SAM lacking in quality. I’m curious if it’s the words he used and the way he structured them, the sentiments he expressed, or both that you have a problem with?

You democrats actually love the police and trust the police and think this deserves 60 years in prison? Seems to me you just like to counter anything I say.
.
Maybe it’s my name 🤣🤣🤣

Extortion SCUM BAGS. They deserve more than the statutory sentence. Much more.
