Park & Shop on Willow Pass Rd. in Concord recently installed a few new electric vehicle charging stations.

QUESTION: If you don’t already have one, have you considered purchasing an electric vehicle?

Over or under 30days before someone slams into that?

Won’t buy electric but considering hybrid.

@ NEVER ENOUGH ~
Do check out hybrid(s), …. Toyota brand is very good.
We bought a new Rav4 hybrid in 2022.
Like that we don’t need to hit a charging station, and less visits to gas station.
Hubby loves the car, … I need to get adjusted to all the bells & whistles.
Still have my ride ‘Beast’, a 1992 5-speed Jeep Cherokee Laredo, … Love Her!!

Nothing can replace the sound of a V8 with dual exhaust and headers. It’s music to my ears.

Oh, yeah! I took the stock exhaust off of my Barracuda and installed headers and dual exhausts with glass-packs, and it sure sounded sweet. Of course, that was when the engine compartment was full of engine instead of computers.

@COWELLIAN….. Challenger with headers onto 4″ side pipes, no mufflers….. hahaha 😄 It took about a year to get a fix it ticket. A few deafened ears and burned back of legs in that year.

My ’67 Barracuda Formula S fastback, 273 V8, mechanical lifters, 4 barrel carb, straight through glasspacks, each exiting just in front of the rear wheel wells, keeping it between 4,000 and 6,000 RPM blasting through the twisties with the glorious sound bouncing off of the mountains while I work the 4 speed manual transmission to keep the revs between the torque peak and redline. Fantastic way to burn a tank of gas. It sits in my garage waiting to be restored (I bought it new) while I enjoy my Mazda 3. Funny thing is that the Mazda, with half of the cylinders, half of the engine size and 2/3 the horsepower is quicker and handles better; but it doesn’t make the same sound.

Nonthing like the smell of premix in the air. It makes my eyes water thinking about it.

THE WIZARD,
.
The smell of diesel exhaust on a cold foggy morning brings back the memories and joy I had during my time farming and ranching.

Anyone remember indoor midget racing at the Cow Palace?
The huge exhaust cloud that obscured the ceiling resembled Los Angeles.
The sound was incredible.

A screaming V-12 can.

No. It’s all BS.

OOOHHH!
Fresh copper wire for the tweakers to strip.

No, I would not buy an EV now. There are better ideas coming.

Hydrogen internal combustion engine.

Hydrogen.

Or ammonia. As I understand it no new car needed just a modification to existing gasoline using vehicles. Toyota is developing it.

Have two mid 1990s American full size with LT1 engines and I’m keeping them.

Everyone in that area is just buying electric cars en masse…..
will get stripped of copper before all chargers get used once
Do the owners know anything about Park n Shop or Concord?

Yep, hey, look at the pic. Not one EV being charged.

No … still not perfected enough… charging stations are far from ubiquitous

People will park their cars there whether EV or not. They will ignore the signs and the chargers. Parking is at a premium there.

8
2

No, they do not make a truck that can pull my travel trailer far enough between charges. There are no charging stations in State Parks or National parks.

12

No I will not buy an electric vehicle! Had friends that did and they had a big hassle just trying to get to LA. Long wait to charge and very high cost. Cost more than gasoline. Plus we have too many power outages that I cannot depend that I will have a charge in the morning to get to work- or even evacuate. Plus, according to our friends if you turn the heat or air conditioner on you reduce your range dramatically. No sir! I actually sometimes think the government is pushing us into it so they can control us more. Plus the government can’t provide Dependable power now how are they going to do so when everybody’s charging the electric cars?

13

I meant to say the utilities cannot guarantee they will have enough power. Especially with the government restricting any new power plants from being built.

Cost more than gasoline is clearly not true. My average energy consumption for an Audi Q8 e-tron measured over 5000 miles is 42.3 kWh/100 miles. If I charge at home 1 kWh costs off peak $0.345 and even at Peak $0.53 If I charge on a charging station Audi pays on certain stations for the first 2 years but if I had to pay the cost would be $0.56 for 1 kWh. If you do the math the cost per 100 miles is anywhere $14.60 to $23.70 per 100 miles. A gas powered Q8 gets about 18 miles per gallon premium on average. Which means the gas cost for the same type of car per 100 miles is about $27.80 at a premium gas price of $5.50 per gallon.
.
BTW freeway driving with A/C, Sirius XM, heated seats and lights on drops to about 37.3 kWh/100 miles. And when I was getting gas on I-5 back in January this year the cost there was $7.50/gallon

7
9

Nice story and they will soon raise soon raiae your rates making it ever harder to believe anything you say

6

You can find on the internet calculators which convert the kWh/100miles into miles per equivalent gallon. If you do so the average of 42.3 kWh/100miles converts to about 79.7 mpg.

3
3

All their mileage is based on driving no faster than 55,so anyone here saying they are saving money is lying or they drive like my mother, and if its cold outside your charge takes longer and goes away quicker. Will result in thousand of freezing deaths in the east coast in the winter if they make eveyone own an EV.
This is merely population control and an intelligence test.Failing the test can result in death

I’m happy to provide you breakdown by different trips since that’s what the audiconnect app also provides:
.
Here is a slow city trip
Distance driven: 3.1 miles Average speed 15mph Average consumption 53.6 kWh/100 miles
.
Here is a freeway trip including getting on and off the freeway
Distance driven 56 miles Average speed 45mph Average consumption 37,3 kWh.100 miles
.
As you can see driving slow actually increases energy use, The 56 miles trip includes about 10 miles on city streets to get on and off the freeway so 45 mph average means it was probably closer to 65 plus on the freeway,

This is the govts way of controlling if you travel, and how far. They cant shut off all the gas pumps as soon as they want people to stay home, they shut your power down to a minimum or off,and you wont be charging your car,or running your AC.

5
5

You realize that gas pumps depend on electricity to work. So if you believe the government can shut off electricity they would also shut off gas pumps.

5
4

no they wont shut down convenience store/gas stations, and i knew you would say that.
They will lower the generation pf power to residential areas.
Nice BS try

its called a “brownout”

Power off…nobody goes anywhere. The guy with gas reserves puts an as on Craigslist for $50 a gallon. He sells out in one day. They promptly arrest him

The security at park n shop is gone now.The chargers will get stolen, each worth at least
10 k

Question for EV owners. If you need a full charge how long does it take to get and full charge and how much does it cost?

I guess it depends on the make and model of your EV. I have an Auidi Q8 e-tron. It has a battery capacity of 114 kWh. Generally for day to day use it is recommended to charge to 80% to preserve battery longevity. I have a 240V plug at home and if I re-charge when I’m down to about 30% back up to 80% it takes about 6 hours (I use a built in timer to take advantage of the off peak PG&E rates. So roughly 50 kWh will cost me about $17. With an average consumption of 42.3 kWh/100mi that gives me about 120 miles for regular commute (which means I charge about once a week).
.
For longer distance I use the fast charging stations. They charge at about 135 kWh/hour for maybe 65 kWh it will take about 30 minutes. I usually use that time for a break and drink a coffee. Audi gives you unlimited use of Electrify America charging stations for two years, so far I had not to pay at any of these stations (it’s just plug and charge). But if you have to pay I noted that the rate for 1kWh has been constant for the last 6 months at $.56 per kWh.
.
Obviously it does take longer to charge on the road compared to a gas station. However for regular use it’s quite convenient to plug in one night a week and have it charge by time you leave in the morning.

So you admit at best its a get around town mode of transportation, just like electric scooter, and taken just as seriously.a grocery getter……that costs $50 -100 k.
Vehicular extinction like the dodo,it will go.

2

Here is another data point. I just got back from filling up a gas powered Q8. It cost me $58 and I had driven 153 miles since the last fill up. So gas cost was about $0.38 per mile compared to the fully electric Q8 which comes in at about $0.14 per mile.
.
So clearly the fuel cost is much lower for an electric car, but it really depends on your use of the car. If you drive frequently very long distances the additional fuel cost may be offset by the time savings to refuel/recharge. If you don’t drive long distances that often, the charging time is no real issue since you can charge at home while you sleep.

Heavier Electric Vehicles in multi story parking garages?

Recently, a guy published an article about how he tried to drive from new orleans to chicago and just couldnt do it.Top many broken chargers, the ones that worked had a line of people that would take several hours each.He went home and sold his EV at a loss, and realized this will never work for this country,or any.

I wonder how many Tesla owners shop at Park n’ Shop? Sounds like a Walnut Creek thing.

someone one spent alot of money to build something that will rot,get crashed into and plundered..Most of the locals think its a self serve car wash that isnt working…fact.
