It’s not what it sounds like, but it could end up losing you a lot of money.
One Claycord resident, our friend “Man in Brown” was contacted this week by someone he doesn’t know, from a number that he didn’t recognize, and it has all the signs of a “Pig Butchering Scam.”
Check out the video below to learn more. Thanks to “Man in Brown” for the heads-up!
that’s why if I don’t recognize, I don’t answer….
I got this. I wrote ‘wrong number’. They kept talking and sent a picture- so weird..: then then they texted in Chinese. I google translated and it was ‘this is all a lie’: WTH?!? I blocked them.
There is another, more insidious way to get your money. It starts out the same way. With me it was a “wrong number” text. You let them know they have the wrong number. What I learned to do years ago with landline wrong numbers. The thank you and say how courteous you are for not getting mad at them. At this point I didn’t respond. But I didn’t think scam, I thought an overly friendly person. But I can see how it could progress.
They develop a rapport. Then they tell you how good they’re doing in cryptocurrency. But they don’t ask for money. They tell you about an investment app you can get that they use too. You download the app from your own App Store. You invest and watch your returns on the app. When you try to cash out is when you find out the app was fake.
I always thought that Apple and Google vested the apps on their stores.
Stupidity brings stupidity
John Oliver recently presented a show about pig butchering with more information and some laughs.

Skepticism is the ability to have a critical mind and seek conclusive evidence before accepting someone’s assertions as true.
I used to let someone know if they had the wrong number, but I stopped years ago. I won’t communicate with anyone I don’t know whether by phone or text. The world has changed, and not for the better. It’s not worth it. I block any number I don’t recognize.
all I can think of is, a fool and his money….
My blocked number list is likely much longer than my contacts. Every call I get from Antioch and Moraga is a scam, by my definition. No message left? Must have been a scam. Keep blocking those numbers, Claycord!
Butchering Pigs would make a good band name. For the right band.
