Two men were arrested on suspicion of stealing over $6,000 in diesel from a gas station, Benicia Police said Thursday.
Police responded to a report of a diesel theft earlier this week at a gas station in the 5900 block of East Second Street in Benicia. A gas pump had been vandalized and two suspects were captured on surveillance footage driving two separate pickup trucks. Police shared the suspects’ license plates with other agencies in the hopes of finding the men.
On Thursday, a San Ramon police officer recognized one of the pickup trucks going north on Interstate Highway 680 toward Benicia, and notified local police. The drivers of both trucks arrived back at the same gas station they had allegedly robbed of diesel, where they were detained by police.
Officers allege they found a piece of a damaged gas pump in one of the vehicles.
Arrested were Jose Morgado Nunez, 53, on suspicion of grand theft, conspiracy to commit a crime, receiving stolen property, vandalism and a warrant. Juan Miguel Castillovega, 32, was also arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit a crime and grand theft.
So how do you get 6k gallon of diesel in a pick up truck. 6k gallon of diesel must weigh
Several thousand lbs.
$6,000 of diesel, not 6,000 gallons. You can buy 100+ gallon tanks to go in the back of trucks, so it wouldn’t be that hard for two trucks to steal that much diesel over multiple trips.
$6000 of diesel is 1000 gallons (retail $6 per gal = 1000 gal) Diesel is 7 lbs per gal so easy math is 7000 lbs. A one ton truck can carry 2000lbs and two can carry 4000lbs….there is no math that works here. Not only that it would have taken an hr to pump it “think someone would have noticed?”
Tonnage is not reflective of payload capacity. The half, three-quarter and one ton designations now just indicate light, medium and heavy-duty, but the actual payload capacities are much higher.
The Ram 1500 is a 1/2-ton pickup, and its payload capacity is well over 1 ton. The Ford F-150, another 1/2-ton, can carry 3,300 lb.
The F-250 and the GMC 2500 HD are 3/4-ton trucks, but can each carry around 4,200 lb
The Chevy 3500 HD and the F-350 are 1-ton trucks, but can carry about 7,500 lb and 8,000 lb, respectively.
The police arrested them, the DA probably released them and their trucks (with stolen property) already.
Diesel weights 7.1lbs a gallon. Average $5.59 a gallon. Approximately 1073 gallons. 1073 x 7.1 = 7618lbs. So yes, “several thousand pounds”. Sorry, I’m really bored with all this rain. Haha
I wonder if they are our wonderful guests from south of the OPEN border?
Watch out Old Otis: your correct observation might get you labeled as prejudiced, racist, xenophobic, homophobic. Am/Fm and AC/DC!
Good job LE! DA – can you throw the book at them ? make an example of them instead of releasing them through the revolving door?!
That would be nice but I won’t hold my breath.
Glad to see a perp walk photo!
This is maddening I mean not profiling at all but if you look at the 3 posts in a row on this site. It’s all Hispanics. Probably illegal and receiving handouts from our generous government. At the cost of our hard earned tax dollars. Why fix our country’s problems with that money and let them continue coming in and costing millions is freebies, and legal fees with all the crimes they commit. Come on over illegally you can get free money, medical care and housing. Commit crimes and get a slap on the wrist and go right back to it. It’s disgusting and sickening where this once proud county is and it’s only going to get worse. Deport and close the borders PERIOD!!! Sorry for your troubles but we got our own people and country to worry about. GTFOH!!!!
Deportation isn’t the answer if the criminals can immigrate repeatedly because of open borders.
