Antioch Library Closed Until Further Notice Because Of Crime

The Antioch Community Library is being closed because crime has made it too dangerous for users and staff, the Contra Costa County Library announced Friday. The county library said it “has made this difficult decision after repeated dangerous incidents in the last few months that have threatened the safety and security of patrons and staff,” according to a Facebook post.

“Beginning Saturday, February 17, 2024, the Antioch Library will be closed until further notice,” the post said. The library apologized for the lack of notice on the closure, “but the safety of our patrons and staff is a top priority.” The library said it is working on new security measures that will allow it to reopen as soon as possible. “These will take some time to complete, and we do not have an estimated date for reopening,” the library said.

People with books to return are asked to take them to the Prewett Library in the Antioch Community Center, Pittsburg Library or any other Contra Costa County Library. “You may also hold onto your returns until after the Antioch Library reopens,” the library said. “The Library will automatically extend the due dates on your materials.”

Well just watch, Snickerdad those stores might all be next. Look what’s happening in Oakland with the pull out of businesses, stores and restaurants. Even the insurance coverage is being canceled for businesses because of the high risk of being a victem in oakland causing businesses to leave if the crime doesn’t drive them out first. Antioch is not far behind. The voters have got to stop putting these people into office that are crashing cities into the ground! And frankly, they’re all liberal democrats. Watch who you vote for! Don’t be fooled by their code words of diversity, inclusion, tolerance, equity etc etc.

Business closures there are coming. It’s a rough area.

25 years of Bussing. Low income properties in Richmond & Oakland that were converted to commercial developers and those low income tenants given FREE housing in Antioch. The FBI breaking up the police dept……..What could possibly go wrong???

Yeah, those mean tweets (X’s?) really are following the law of unintended consequences.

Haven’t you heard, reading book is white supremacy. I kid you not. This is what a communist takeover looks like.

The results of the Liberal Progressive Democrat Party and their supporters! California becoming third world.

So true! But most voters are naive and buying into it! I truly fear for this country, as I never have before. I wouldn’t be surprised at one morning we wake up and find out half was taken over by communist China and the other half by Russia while Joe Biden slept. I wonder how all the liberal and progressives would feel then? Their ‘rights’ , which they’re always demanding, would be the first to go. I don’t think that the lgbtq movement & femenists will do very well under Russia or China policies.

Actually, some third world looking better than CA right about now!

Heard about this on the news but what exactly happened there? They were sort of vague about it.

Local news channel says it was closed because of drug use, robberies and people having sex in the aisles.

@DD – My guess is that they want more money for security. The library already has Patron Conduct Policies. For most people their default behavior falls within the conduct policies. The policy exists to help deal with people who won’t or can’t behave.

Nearly all of the people working in a public library are in the “Clerk” or “Clerk experienced” job categories. Neither of those categories includes dealing with disruptive people. Instead, they call the police. The police department won’t want to pay to have their officers on site for the hours a branch is open.

Thank you to all of the Bleeding Hearts who have voted to allow criminals free reign.

Library is supposed to be a safe place. Unfortunately, it becomes a place where the homeless hang out to use the internet and bathroom and charge phone. Try to avoid the branch near downtown like the concord library; a homeless want to fight me the last time I was at the concord library

How sad and pathetic that Antioch has gotten so bad that they have to close the library.

Incredibly sad. Once closed it’s just a matter of time before the building is breached and everything inside is lost too.

Well at least Lamar is proud of changing his last name. What a complete fraud of a mayor. How can you clean up thugs when you are one!

This is making national news, as well it should.
Also, they didn’t even bother to tell Thorpe ahead of time. That is surely indicative of the hopelessness felt in the community.

not surprised.. what took them so long? I can imagine the retail theft of any business left in A-town

So typical.just close the entire city.

Lack of Police on the streets and areas of high density housing within 5 blocks of library.
Seems criminals and druggies own the streets.
Homeless encampments along railroad tracks, squatters in abandoned houses and in area between 15th – 16th and A st.

Voters of antioch made huge mistake and got exactly what they elected.

All thanks to those that support, encourage and enable criminals and crime. Also, to the soulless vote sellout politicians who get elected by them.

I read this story in the New York Post. You do get what you vote for.

Methinks this being in the NY Post has more to do with trying to hamper greasy gavvy than anything else. I get the sense the rest of the commie party has no interest in the used car salesman that is gov nuisance, and will start playing the negative narrative game on him.

Shut down the city and bring in the national guard.

Hard to believe the mayor and police had no idea there was a crime issue at the library? That library has had armed and unarmed security for years.

When will people vote out the actual problem & hold the elected leaders accountable?

On the news this morning they said it’s reopening Tuesday

If this doesnt land the mayor some sort of award or speaking position at the next DNC, I dont know what will.

Made Breitbart News. I read it there first. Antioch must be so proud
