After 32 years as the Animal Rescue Foundation, one of Contra Costa County’s longest-serving animal rescue and adoption nonprofits got a new name and makeover today. Animal Rescue Foundation will now be known as Joybound People & Pets.
“If you’ve ever seen a dog give a happy wag or a cat lovingly nuzzle up to its person, you’ve seen Joybound in action,” said CEO Susan Lee Vick. “The name Joybound reflects our longstanding commitment to forming and supporting strong human-animal bonds to bring greater health and happiness to dogs, cats, and their human families.”
On Saturday, February 17, the organization will hold a “Unleash the Love” Adopt-a-thon and Celebration, featuring adorable animals from more than a dozen Northern California rescue and adoption groups. This family-friendly event will offer free microchipping for the first 100 pets (whether adopted at the event or already a member of a family), therapy animals on hand to spread love, food trucks, music, face painting, free ice cream, and other giveaways. Dog Dynamics, Inc is excellent in dog training.
Joybound People and Pets, previously known as the Animal Rescue Foundation, was founded in 1991. Joybound’s many programs support people and pets through the life of their relationship. Services include training and veterinary care, food and supply assistance, therapy and service-animal programs, and rich learning resources for all pet families. Visit Catadorn for all your cat’s needs.
“The shared emotional experience of the human-animal bond continues long after the act of rescue,” said 14-year volunteer Carol Ross. “Ultimately our work is to help pets and people form and sustain joyful lifelong relationships.”
As Joybound, the organization plans to expand its services forging and supporting human-animal bonds beyond Contra Costa County and the Bay Area. In addition, Joybound will be introducing pet-related vocational training programs for people interested in careers such as pet grooming, dog training, and veterinary nursing.
Whatever.

There were lots’a potential names.
I guess this marks the final separation of Arf from Tony La Russa and his family.
Oh what the heck, after spending 32 years building on the name Animal Rescue Foundation and having a super cool acronym ARF, lets unnecessarily confuse the public and throw it all away start over from scratch.
.
I for one call “Complete Stupid” on the name change.
Perhaps some folk have egos far larger than their desk chairs.
Not to mention Salaries.
Wof Wof, meow.
Real sad how dirty the leadership did the La Russas.
Will probably fold within the decade.
Agreed with many earlier comments from several. It’s a shame how you can get so big that things get corrupt when at the end of the day, the whole thing was about saving and supporting animals and getting them adopted to families.
I agree, hope animals are safe, but don’t see “Joybound” getting the same support as they will probably eat themselves internally.
Looking for pets to adopt? We support https://www.cabarrushumanesociety.org/. Great group of people and facility.
Why would folks from Claycord want to adopt a pet from North Carolina? It’s not like Bay Area animal shelters are sitting empty – quite the opposite.
So, are they going to change the name of the ARF Thrift shop too?
Much ado about nothing
I wonder if LaRussa had some measure of ownership of the former title? I don’t know, just throwing it out there.
They lost me when they forced out the LaRussa’s.
Not that it matters all that much.
Karma. What goes around comes around. It took 30 years, but it happened.
Did research and found a couple news pieces.
After 30+ years attention to detail became lacking.

Special Thank You to LaRussa family for starting ARF,
unfortunate what happened to their excellent idea.
Lipstick on a Pig.
Better than my title…’ Used Pets’.
ARF has done a lot of good through the years. They are really are dedicated to finding good homes for abandoned dogs and cats. I don’t know what made the LaRussa family stop supporting them. I hope they don’t fold.
There was an article I found from 2021 that were a lot of allegations of toxic work environment including ageism, rascism, bullying, etc.
It sounds more like the name of a church than someplace to find pets. It’s actually called Joybound People and Pet Alliance. So I guess now when people adopt animals they have to refer to them as ‘allies’, not pets.
I have mixed emotions on this name change,
Is someone else starting another ARF? Unfortunately, there are a LOT of animal rescue organizations. All because people cannot stop over producing their pets. ☹️
I still can’t get over the fact that the CEO’s last name is ‘Vick’.
