Sunny skies and warm temperatures will give way to wind and heavy rain this week as an atmospheric river makes its way to Northern and Central California from the tropical Pacific Ocean.
Clouds are expected to move across the region Tuesday, with rain arriving in the North Bay late in the evening hours and progressing across the entire region Wednesday.
The highest rain totals are expected in the North Bay, with 4 to 6 inches possible in and around Cloverdale and potentially higher amounts in the coastal mountains, Kennedy said.
The rest of the Bay Area will likely see 1 to 3 inches of rain, with higher totals likely at higher elevations.
This round of storms will also be accompanied by strong winds of 30 to 40 mph coming from the south, with possible gusts of up to 60 mph at some coastal areas and along ridgetops.
The forecast also calls for the possibility of rapidly rising rivers and streams, with some possible flooding, as well as downed trees, power lines and broken branches.
“The soils are still fairly saturated and we’re not anticipating that they’ll dry out enough to prevent the risk of shallow landslides,” Kennedy said.
After Wednesday, the somewhat slow moving system will pick up speed as it heads out of the region but showers are expected to linger through Saturday, with more rain possible Sunday and Monday.
.
Yeah, right.
.
The past few storms haven’t been anywhere near the intensity or forecasted amounts.
.
The weather guessers need to recalibrate their models and polish their crystal balls.

Get your Arks ready! 🤣
Probably brought to you by that Australian company that produces atmospheric rivers from a HARP like installation on the eastern side of one of the Hawaiian islands.😎
For someone without a car i have a love hate relationship with rain. I have an umbrella but it still sucks being caught out in the rain.
Few weeks ago during a rainstorm i saw a homeless kid walking around concord in the pouring rain no jacket no umbrella it was so sad to see him like that.
We use the map box on this page to see when we can venture out on rainy days.

I tend to use the radar image on https://weather.com/weather/today/l/94517:4:US
If I need more detail I click on the image. The detailed version includes a slider bar where you can scroll up to two hours back and six hours into the future. I look for gaps in the rain bands to plan my outside activity time. There’s also a play button where it’s like a time lapse movie. Zoom out and you see the big picture. It’s snowing out in the Pacific Ocean to the west of Canada! The big rain bands are moving in towards us.
There are also wind advisories. Be prepared for 25 to 35 mph winds from the south with gusts up to 45 mph from 4am Wednesday to 4am Thursday. Loose patio furniture should be put away. Branches and trees will be knocked down leading to power/phone/Internet outages. The worse of it will be to the north of us. The southern border for the advisory runs from north of the bay bridge to the western part of the delta.
If you plan on driving then be prepared for debris plus flooding in the roadways. If you have a tall vehicle then expect to get pushed around at times.
formerly referred to as a ‘rain storm’, but that wasn’t shocking enough. “Pineapple express” seemed too friendly and sort of relaxing, so “atmospheric river” was dreamt up to get people to pay attention.
Next it will be something like “killer climate calamity with unhoused water feature”
If you like pina coladas…
Darn! I spent 3 hours on Sunday washing and waxing the car! So I guess you could thank me for the rain. But let’s be honest the weather forecasters are usually wrong and they usually like to hype it up and worry people. I think we get nothing as bad as they say.
There’s already an article in SFGATE, ‘Weather service adjusts SF Bay Area forecast for upcoming storm’. The gist of it is that the storm is not the “biggest” since the start of the season and it’s not going to be the massive, multi-week rain and flood event across CA that some social media posts were posts were suggesting last week. Guess we will see…
Watchhhh out and go stock up on Toilet Paper we have an Atmospheric Storm!
Well……. I guess I can take the life jacket off.
