The Bay Area Air Quality Management District is strongly discouraging wood burning over the New Year’s weekend in an effort to keep air quality healthy.
The air district is asking residents not to burn wood in their fireplaces, wood stoves or outdoor fire pits through the New Year’s holiday. Air quality is projected to be “moderate” for the Bay Area during that time, but that could change if people begin to create wood smoke.
The air district did note that it is not illegal to burn word, nor are they issuing a Spare the Air alert, but they “strongly discourage” the practice.
Residents are also asked not to set off personal fireworks displays, which may be illegal in most areas anyway. But both wood smoke and fireworks smoke can cause unhealthy spikes in air pollution.

If it is raining… why does it matter? The bots seem to be faulty again! Or they just want to make us miserable.
Between 80-90% of wintertime PM 2.5 comes from sources other than people heating their homes with wood.
Even if no one heated their homes with wood we would still have Spare the Air Days and PM 2.5.
Also No wiping your ### between the hours of 12:00am – 11:59pm. Good luck!
I’m enjoying this new tone from the unelected no authority non-profit. They can strongly discourage until their little hearts are content. When they start barking orders, that’s a different story. I’m will still burn wood if that’s what I want. Remember when these fools threatened to come to houses and issue fines if you were burning unless it was your only source of heat? They tried, we stood our ground. Now they “strongly discourage”. Perfect.
The BAAQD is strongly discouraging wood burning because their benefactors from the PUC and the PG&E want more profits from the ratepayers, which by the way they voted in a 18% on our utility bills starting next month. In addition to that, they also want to implement another program charging people who make a better income to pay for others that don’t. That doesn’t sound like a fair way to bill people going forward. In other words some homes will pay a fraction of the cost while others will have to pay much higher rates. Burn your wood folks, the air is quite clean the last few days…
Started a fire first thing this morning. It is always on the Holidays when they tell people not to burn. BS!!!!!!!!!!!!! It also helps to keep our PG&E bill down.
I’ve been “strongly discouraging” Newscum’s extreme lib antics for years now…. even written him personally…. never got a reply… wonder if he’ll get my to the message I’m sending via smoke signals
I really don’t think there are too many people that listen to the simple thinking, closed minded dolts on the BAAQD. Their goal is to ban wood fireplaces. It’s an ideology thing not a health thing and of course it is a PG&E thing.
New Year’s celebration is one where I don’t usually fire up the smoker…
Maybe, I’ll need to now………….
Guess how many legal fireworks displays the BAAQMD has banned over the last 10 Years to prevent PM 2.5?
