As State Ban On Gas-Powered Leaf Blower Sales Goes Into Effect In 2024, City Of Lafayette Moves To Ban Them Entirely

In the wake of California banning the sale of gas-powered leaf blowers by 2024, the city of Lafayette will administer its own law banning their use entirely beginning on July 1 of next year.

The Lafayette City Council adopted the new ordinance in October.

According to the city, gas-powered leaf blowers cause pollution and high noise levels, not to mention they are harmful to those who operate them and bystanders. Citing the city’s Environmental Action Plan, the council’s ordinance states that Lafayette is “deeply concerned” about climate change and other environmental hazards and this ban will reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

In October 2021, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed Assembly Bill 1346 into law, banning the sales of new gasoline-powered leaf blowers, lawnmowers, chainsaws, generators and other small-engines beginning Jan. 1, 2024.

For Lafayette residents who don’t have access to electric leaf blowers, the city has a lending program. The city is offering two types of battery-operated leaf blowers, one hand-held and one commercial grade backpack blower. To learn more, go to www.lovelafayette.org/leaf-blower-lending.

Good thing Nevada isn’t that far of a drive.

Californians can’t purchase them in another state (as far as I’ve heard).
I read that they ID you and if you are a CA resident, they can’t sell them to you.

Please provide a source. I’d be surprised to find another state that requires ID to purchase anything other than a controlled substance or product in THAT state.

cash requires no ID. never has.

@COUNTRYGAL…I believe it’s the same for guns and ammo.

It is amazing the “leaf blowers” are the concern when our whole country is messed up. Priorities are definitely not there.

MAGA SAM –

I wish I could write more but it would take a whole day. That is how messed up our society is hahahaha

The sale of gas powered generators is also being banned.

It is all small gas engines, Thanks Governor Grease Ball.

Tyrants!!

Joseph’s Lawnmowers in PH said the ban on gas generators won’t be till 2025 or later – it’s all hung up in legal stuff.. anybody else hear that?

Good riddance!

While the policy wants for any meaningful impact on global carbon emissions, few will miss the grating mechanical whine echoing through our pristine canyons or noxious fumes wafting across fence lines.

You sir are a real good example of what is wrong with this country. My guess is that you dont have any leaves in your yard, so you are just fine imposing your idiotic principles where they clearly dont belong.
Never were you even close to a logical argument. We are now all dumber for having read your comments. Thank you.

Use a rake. You know that thing that was used for forever before the leaf blower.

First, don’t feed the trolls!
Second, if you are a Tennessee guy, you know that here in Tennessee, no one cares if we use hand-powered, gasoline, or electric implements. I prefer electric. And no one cares if we use firewood or gas in our fireplaces. I prefer natural gas, and during the last power outage, we stayed warm. And if we’re lucky, before we have another power outage, our new natural gas generator will be working and online.

@COWELLIAN….BTW, what do trolls actually eat?, sh1t? Larry, what’s for dinner tonight?

I can use my Stihl chainsaw if you like … it echo’s nicely. It is also far louder than any leaf blower out there.

@LAMORINDA LARRY….Your “pristine canyons” may not be as pristine as you think, here’s a bit of history about the Orinda Petroleum Co., “Come and listen to a story about a man named Jed….”

There’s black gold in them thar backyards.

I wish they could spend more time on fixing our roads in Concord!

Lafayeete is smarter than Walnut Creek and has better living conditions in general.
Bravo Lafayette!!

Can hardly wait for them battery powered rototillers.

23

Have they decided, yet, what they are going to do with all the “used up” batteries?

15

Now the gardeners will be raking and sweeping adding to the cost of the maintenance. I can almost hear the complaints already about the increased cost.

32

You can rake yourself if they relly bother you and be healthy to boot. Hire a high school student to help you.
Leaves are not the enemy, they help nature in many ways. Leave the leaves!

just get an AI robot gardener. They are something like garden roombas. More capable ones are in development. But then ol’ Klaus sez you’ll not own your own home, garden, car and be happy. So don’t worry about it. Just let it overgrow into jungle. 🤣

Silent Running

Run Silent Run Deep ( good clark gable flick)

Good movie for it’s time, 1972.

True. Raking takes more time which takes away the many homes they do in a day. Now less homes daily and will have to raise their prices due to the loss of daily jobs.

What about all the emissions from my car to drive to Reno and buy these items up there

Good luck with that Lafayette. Are you going to hire extra Police to stop blowing. Hmmm!

What about the landscape workers? This is another example of how the liberal politicians lie about how they support the working man. How are tree trimming companies going to do their jobs with battery chainsaws?
Your leaders want us to go all electric in our houses, but they have not increased power generation, so we are having more power outages. Then they ban gas generators so you can’t power much needed appliances refrigerators, freezers, medical equipment when the power goes off. The insanity continues in this state.

I think for some folks the frustration is seeing people just blow the leaves into the street and leave them there. It feels rare to see people actually pile their leaves up and put them into waste bins.

7
7

I’m still at a lost as when it became a must to have every leaf in your yard removed weekly. I get blowing all your dust over the neighbor so they can blow it back two days later.

17
4

Just a guess, city council all liberals . . . . .

14
5

I’d rather see a ban on blowing leaves into the street. Last week on a windy day a crew of gardeners was blowing the leaves from the property they were working on into the street. The leaves were promptly getting blown down the street by the traffic and wind. The leaves clog storm drains which causes local flooding. The flooding softens the dirt under the street in that spot which leads to the asphalt flexing and developing potholes.

15

I blame the NIMBY mentality going haywire in Lafayette. Nothing to do with emissions, just loud noise. The price of keeping your city neat and tidy just went up.

12

Good times! What nobody saw: now along with the noise from the electric leaf blowers etc…….you’ll get to listen to the generator in the bed of the landscapers truck. Either to power a leaf blower or recharge batteries.

Can’t you see the public service announcement “Use a leaf blower, go to jail”

I got a good chuckle watching this, it’s Orinda’s film about leaf blowers. I hope you do too.

Claim of gas leaf blower in video, noise level 100+ dB at one mile
at 1 minute 6 second mark in second video.
Would be interested to see that dB reading reproduced at a one mile distance.
.
Largest I could find,
“220 MPH 1110 CFM 79.9 cc Gas 2-Stroke Backpack Leaf Blower.”
“Noise rating (dB) 80”
.
Corded electric leaf blower
140 MPH 725 CFM 12 Amp Electric Handheld
An isn’t this interesting “Noise rating (dB) 70.1”
.
Will corded electric be next type banned ? ? ?

@ORIGINAL G……100 dBs at a mile?….You couldn’t get that high of a reading standing in front of the stage at a Day On the Green. Those folks with the two kids should be charged with child abuse, imagine growing up having snooty parents like them. All those people are the ones that are still wearing masks alone in their car.

What would be a Californian Saturday morning without the sound leaf blowers! 😄

Can’t wait for Gavin’s to mandate battery powered earth movers and excavators!!

Wait until Gavin sets his sights on Gross polluter airplanes?? Imagine this conversation.

My United flight to Nashville leaves SFO at 8:00am. I have a 4 hour layover in Bakersville, Pheonix, Las Vegas, Flagstaff, Albuquerque, Amarillo, Oklahoma City, Arkansas, Memphis, Birmingham.

Having worked in various neighborhoods in Orinda, it was pretty sad that 6 days a week that would be all that you would hear in such a beautiful area.
Too bad that it took some legislation before the manufacturers took action, supposedly there’s gas versions available now that are quieter.

Most of us “common” folk would not understand as we probably only have to deal with the noise of a leaf blower 1 day per week.

Lafayette homeowners can’t afford the leafblowers ? HAHAHA

When does this go into effect? 1984?
