Today’s question:

As you’ve probably noticed, more and more items in stores are being locked behind glass/plexiglass to prevent theft. Items such as baby products, makeup and other cosmetic supplies, feminine hygiene products, alcohol, etc. are now stored behind glass/plexiglass.

QUESTION: Have you been inconvenienced by this, and in the future, do you think some stores will end up locking almost everything up because of theft?

Talk about it….

It is an inconvenience, but what are stores gonna do? Local DA’s are worthless……

Beat the crap out of thieves like the clerk did in Stockton. Put pressure on these scum DAs they are elected officials and nothing more

32

it is a pain and stupid especially when it’s something no one would steal and behind glass because it is grouped with a certain bunch of things. If a clerk says “that’s the way it is” when I summon them and I comment on the mess they get a lecture from me why it doesn’t need to be.

6
31

You summon them? How magnanimous of you.

What makes you think the poor worker bee employee making minimum wage in retail G.A.F. what think?!? The employee doesn’t have any input in how Corporate decides to display their wares.. it’s not their store. Working retail is hard enough without having to deal with obnoxious customers like you.

Personally, I’d give you a trespass admonishment and tell you to never come back to the store or be arrested but that’s just me.

It is ignorant to say “no one would steal what is locked up”, that is why it is locked up, they store do inventory, they know how much of certain products gets stolen. Expensive handbags at department stores is secured with a wire because they are always being stolen, sometimes thieves even cut the wire.
You are right retail employees do not have a say in these matters, as for obnoxious customers, as someone that works retail I can only say 95 percent, or even a little more, are very nice and understanding. Another 2-3 percent can be difficult, but can be reasoned with. Then there’s a small percentages that is never happy, no matter what you try to do for them.

What’s wrong with some dialog? When you press the button for one to unlock the case you are “summing” them. I think that is even printed of the sign. The employee probably just added to the list of people they already heard complains from and their marketing is interested in such feedback. That’s also a way a business operates. Squeaking wheels get the oil.

Inconvenience so maybe they could hire a couple more people to unlock them. Sometimes they do change what is locked. One item I had to get unlocked a few months ago is now back in the open.

I work at one of those stores and we added several lock up cases because of theft. The thing is the criminals will go to the next cheap item and ransack the shelves. I understand it’s a pain in the rear, but If it wasn’t locked up then chances are someone would come along and steal every last item on the shelf. That means paying customers wouldn’t have anything left to buy. A lot of customers are surprised that theft is that bad but most people live their lives with their head in the sand. To the people that refuse to wait, order it on the app and pull up and someone will bring it to you.

.
It’s annoying AF!
.
But it’s the sign of the times in California where criminals are emboldened due to the soft application and prosecution of criminal law and punishment.
.
California’s liberal citizenry and liberal State and local elected officials (Like Newsom, Bonta, Bass, Gascon, Boudin, Price, Becton, Schaaf, Thao) are to blame. The only one who seems to be tough(er) on crime is DA Brooke Jenkins of SF.
.
If there is little to no consequence, then there is no “fear” of incarceration.
.
#2A… To hell with permits…. conceal, carry, and shoot back. WE WILL NOT BE VICTIMIZED.
.

GARBAGE Soros appointed DA is worthless. Sheriff is too timid to assert their Authority and Protect Society.

And we will all be hearing about the biggest “victims”……the useful idiots who are constructing their own brave new world – they’ll ALL be crying about the “food deserts” in their communities. LOL. Should have stepped up to speak out against this.

It has prevented me from shopping at certain stores. Life is precious, my time on this planet is limited, and I don’t want to waste it by waiting for an employee to unlock the display. I don’t know what the future holds, what I do know is that as long as liberals are in control, it will only get worse.
The solution is to stop voting for the soft on crime liberal Democrats.

67

This is why we take back our country from these liberals, get out & vote this filth out

Sign of the times.
I wonder if we’ll go back to the old days when you had to go up to a counter and ask the person behind the counter for items. I worked in a store like that. I would cut cheese to order with a cheese-wire, pull cans of peas, boxes of cereal, etc., and set them on the counter in front of the customer. I’d add up the bill with a notepad and pencil. No chance for shoplifting with that kind of setup.

We’ve come full-circle. Now, we have a modernized version of general stores from the 1840s.

Progress!

16
1

WALLY,
.
Amazon and other internet based ordering and purchasing of products is the modern equivalent of the late 19th and early 20th century version of the Sears catalog. We have indeed come full circle.

I haven’t found it to be an inconvenience. Clerks are usually quick to offer help. In some case, such as those where an individual fills their carts with liquor bottles and walks out without paying, I believe it is a matter of safety for the paying customers not to be confronted in any way by these thieves..

The point is that we should be voting in DAs that actually do their jobs not virtue signal at the citizens expense. It wasn’t like this before all they have to do is prosecute crimes that exist & hold fleabag criminals accountable it’s not that difficult. We should stop making excuses & demand better.

when they overload society with these kind of people how can you win in a vote?Their entire motive.

Prop 47 all but legalized theft property crimes with $950 threshold.
Again side that spends the most wins elections in CA because many voters have attention span of a fungus gnat. Pro 47 side spent $10,306,082 and side against only had $551,800 to spend.

Proposition made it harder for Police to charge a Felony, also 47 made personal use of most illegal drugs only a misdemeanor. DAs don’t seem to bother with misdemeanor property or drug crimes.
.
So how did we get to such a lawless crime ridden place . . . . .
most of you voted for more crime and drug addicts by doing no research, basing your vote on slick focus group fine tuned advertising. There were 2,871,943 voters who saw Proposition for what it was, a desperate attempt to alleviate jail overcrowding caused by prison emptying AB-109 passed in 2011.
.
Products behind plastic is result of voters who couldn’t be troubled to do their own research and become fully educated. Tell ya what, how’s about you figure out who YOUR elected representatives are in state legislature and call them or email them and tell them what you want for a change. They’ve had NO ADULT SUPERVISION for far too long.
.
There’s almost no products protected by plastic at Costco . . . . . . . one door in, one door out with receipts checked and employees guarding emergency exit doors on parking lot side of building.
.
If there is no threat of incarceration,
there is no deterrence to criminal behavior

Proposition 47 was billed as: “The Safe Neighborhood and Schools Act”. It passed in November 2014. It was intended to reduce the number of prisoners in California prisons in California by reclassifying some nonviolent crimes from felonies to misdemeanors thus resulting in many low value criminals not being prosecuted. I don’t get how that makes our neighborhoods and schools safer. I believe it emboldened shop lifters and increased retail theft which is why many stores lock up products or just close their stores. So if it is inconvenient to hail a sales clerk to unlock the plastic case so you can get your toothpaste you may have been tricked into voting for this.

14

It is a huge inconvenience, especially in those stores that respond slowly to assist.

I’m now planning ahead, and ordering such items from Amazon.

18
5

So in other words, “that’s just the way it is”, right?

7
4

Instead of locking up merchandise, lock up the thieves!

I place orders for store pickup so locking up items doesn’t bother me. I think all stores should try store pick up only

15
7

Very annoying and an inconvenience… more to them really … I go to the register and tell them what I want – then they have to go get it while me and others are waiting at the register (ex. Safeway) Small businesses may go under … I know it decreases sales

8

You can thank our worthless DA for this. PROSECUTE the crimes on the books & no problem like before. Why does this scum get voted in?

15
3

BDML – this happened because of voters re-electing lenient incumbents rather than doing their due diligence research prior to voting

14

The solution is to make sure everyone has a livable living. There still may be some theft but a fraction of what it is how and prosecutable.

I don’t think that is true, there is always someone who wants to take the easy way out. Some that steal are on the lower rank of a crime syndicate, and those on top take advantage of them. As someone that work at SunValley mall, I have witnessed my share of “grab and run”, if we are close to the door, it is not unusual to see the thieve, or thieves getting into a very nice newer model SUV.
I do agree that a living wage is a good thing, and also affordable housing, I might reduce some stealing, but certainly not all.

If stores have to lock up merchandise because of crime they are not safe to shop at or park in their parking lots….

23

I’m surprised that the progressive liberal democrat government isn’t forbidding it. After all, one of their number one priorities is support, enabling and encouraging criminals and crime.

Kind of related .. I was at target (pleasant hill) this morning buying something (I know I know) and what a mess at checkout … only two manned registers open with about 15 folks in line at each one. The self check-out had about around 20. You can only buy about 9-10 items at self checkout, so any more and you were screwed.

6
1

Me too . I Amazon a lot now. You have to get in line then get into another line to pay. Then the employees have attitudes after all that.

9
1

You can thank Gavin Newsom who locked everyone down way too long and they all came out bitter, broke, angry and revengeful.
Now lock everything up and waste people’s time and make them feel like punished children.

13
2

Put the products in front of the glass and the thieves behind it.

12

All it means is break the glass, steal less then usually just make sure not to go over $950. Fix the laws Govndumber.

I’ve been inconvenienced twice, when I was trying to buy baby aspirin at Walmart. Price is only 98 cents a bottle. If I had to stand and wait for the clerk to come and unlock the cabinet for me. And then she had to put the aspirin in a special checkout plastic container which the clerk then had to remove once I paid. A lot of trouble for 98 cents. But I understand why the stores have to do this because they’re being stolen blind and the thieves get absolutely no punishment. But this permissiveness towards criminals is causing the rest of us good citizens to suffer.

Happened to me once at Target: All the toothpaste was under lock and key. So I had to enlist an employee to retrieve a tube of Colgate. The employee was friendly and quick in getting me the toothpaste. No biggie. But I was somewhat surprised that she didn’t walk it up to the cash register for me.

Oh, and Costco has had this policy regarding jewelry and some gift cards forever. Have to turn in a receipt showing payment and the merchandise pickup slip to get another employee to get the item from a locked storage room.

KTVU has this on the news. Funny how it was held at the State Capitol and Newsom or the other DA’s weren’t present to get a reality check on how the State protects the criminals with no accountability whatsoever. Once laws change, theft will change. The State needs to wake up or many communities will suffer due to store closures.

According to the National Retail Association, external shrinkage had gone down, internal shrinkage has gone up, but both account for less than 5% of the year’s profits.

But yes, let’s rely on anecdotal opinions based on something seen on social media. Corporations would never lie to the general public, and they sure wouldn’t create busy work for their employees.
