The Pleasant Hill City Council this week picked Vice Mayor Matt Rinn to lead the city anew for 2024.
During the City Council’s annual reorganization meeting Monday, Councilmember Noack nominated Rinn to succeed Mayor Tim Flaherty, who supported the move.
The nomination was approved unanimously, city officials said.
The City Council also unanimously voted Councilmember Sue Noack as Vice Mayor.
This is Rinn’s second term as mayor of Pleasant Hill, having served in 2020.
The mayoral seat in Pleasant Hill changes each year, with the City Council voting for one of its five members to lead the city.
Sadly the people don’t get to vote. Yet.
In council-manager style governments that are common this area the “mayor” and “vice mayor” positions are largely honorary and rotate among the council members. Often when a member is retiring at the end of their term, the council agrees to have that person be the “mayor.” It’s an honor for the outgoing person but also puts the resulting newest member of the council that will replace the outgoing person at the end of the rotation. It gives the newcomer plenty of time to observe and to see details in the mayor and vice mayor roles before they rotate into those positions.
… are they a Mayor Pro Tem sham like WC?
Shouldn’t the Pleasant Hill City Councilmembers who are nominated for Mayor and Vice Mayor abstain from voting for themselves? Something just seems wrong, unethical, and/or immoral to vote for oneself at a public meeting. It looks like a self-dealing or self-rewarding action. It’s not something that I could do, I’d abstain from the vote.
