Today’s question:

QUESTION: On Sunday, Governor Gavin Newsom chose Laphonza Butler to complete the late-Senator Dianne Feinstein’s term. If you could have picked, who would you have chosen to replace Feinstein?

Anyone but a straight white male.

Any why is that?

While Newsom was on the campaign trail he pandered by saying he would endorse a diversity hire

MIKEYV,
.
Governor Newsom chose a black woman to appoint to the US Senate because of all of the grief he was given by the Democratic Party establishment when he appointed California Secretary of State Alex Padilla to the US Senate seat vacated by Senator Kamala Harris when she resigned to become Vice President, instead of appointing another black woman to the vacant US Senate seat in 2021.

13

Whose turn is it next?

2

Is this a sexist and a racist comment?

8
3

It’s sexist and racist decision making on the part of Gavin Newsom.

Politicians(most of them) no longer serve the people. They only serve themselves. They do whatever will benefit, enrich and promote themselves.

I am offended that the talk was all about the replacement HAVING to be a black female. Why? What happened to selecting based on qualifications? Armstrong and Getty nailed it this morning: she checked all the boxes—female, black, lesbian and communist. God save us!

19
5

Since when have liberals supported doing anything based on qualifications?

13
3

Yeah, what did happen to selecting based on qualifications? Queue the Republican party

3
7

Looks like Trump’s qualifications include 91 indictments and lotsa whining of “witch hunt.”

8
6

My ham sandwich has 107 indictments against it.

Almost anybody here on Claycord could perform more equitably, responsibly, and, reasonably than either Feinstein or Butler (or Newsom, Bonta, or Becton for that matter)

Me, I actually live in the state.

38
2

If not BOB… then at least I would have picked someone to represent the State who didn’t flee the state while searching for a better demographic to ensure being elected. Gavin Newsom is mean-stupid-sick, and I hope appointing her leads straight to his own political down-fall.

14
3

I’m really good at predicting the past, so I’ll let someone else win this game.

If I were going to run for president in 2028, would be at least a black woman, person that gets DEMs high dollar campaign contributions, etc. Would pick someone totally opposite to as many traditional conservative values as possible so as to appeal to ultra radical, liberal DEM base.

12
12

Oh what the heck if he’s gonna appoint someone out of state
do it one better and go off continent, . . . . say east coast of Africa.

13
7

I’m thinking Kenya Maybe?

Up to me?? I would appoint Donald Trump. Just to see heads explode.

A conservative. Unfortunately there are not that many known in California. They seem to get no press. Newsome picked a Black lesbian that doesn’t even live in California. That is equity politics for you. Anyway I hope the Republicans can find a commonsense conservative republican to run in the election.

How can someone who doesn’t even live in CA?? can someone explain that to me? Thanks

MS. NOM,
.
She reregistered to vote in California before being appointed making her a resident of California.
.
In 2000, Dick Cheney was running Halliburton in Texas and had Texas residency, so he flew to Wyoming and reregistered to vote there before Governor George W. Bush of Texas announced him as his running-mate. This was necessary because the Electoral College Electors can’t vote for both a presidential candidate and a vice presidential candidate if they’re both residents of the same state.
.
It appears registering to vote is all it takes to change ones residency for an elective office.

10
4

She has owns a home in this state since the 2000’s. That is all one needs to show residency.

Thank you. It still doesn’t make sense to me to be able to represent a place you are not involved with.. politics for ya!

DANGED INEFFECTUAL,
.
If owning a home is all one needs to determine residency then I’d be able to vote in 3-more states.

Welcome to Bizarro-world 2023

Clearly nobody is going to take accountability for the fact that Feistein continued in office way past the point at which she was competent to serve, and the whole thing was so devoid of any brakes that she stayed in until she reached the very end of her long decline.

It’s a sick culture where the octagenarians and nonagenarians hold onto positions of huge power until they are carried out in a coffin.

As for a replacement, I guess I would pick an abortion extremist who doesn’t even live in the state … oh, never mind, that’s not what any same person would do!!

16
8

Someone who is qualified to do the job. It would not be based on the color of the skin or their biological/perceived gender … but then again, Newscum picked someone off of the color of the skin, their gender and how he can use them as a step stool so he can climb to another position (I would prefer prison, left alone on an inhabited island, lost in Antarctica … anywhere he could not cause anymore harm.

19
4

My choice would be somebody who was honest, intelligent, not affiliated with or beholden to either political party(Independent) and motivated to serve California’s best interests. My choice would not be based on gender, sexual orientation, skin color, religion or any other bias not related to an ability to perform the job. Basically my decision making process would be the complete opposite of Newsom’s.

20
6

GOVERNOR MOJO,
.
In order for your US Senate appointee to do anything in Washington, D.C., he/she would either have to caucus with the Democrats or the Republicans, which means your appointee couldn’t meet your requirement of “first not affiliated with or beholden to either political party(Independent).” As Governor MOJO, you may as well leave the seat vacant because no prospective appointee could meet your requirement for the position, because he/she would have to be affiliated with or beholden to at least one political party, that way the federal government could save a few hundred-thousand dollars in pay, benefits, and expenses, rather than having your appointee sitting in Washington, D.C. and doing nothing but collecting a pay check. Senator Kristen Sinema of Arizona, Senator Angus King of Maine, and Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont are all Independents who caucus with the Democrats.

How can someone who has never even live in CA get this job? Please someone explain this to me.

13
4

MS. MOM,
.
It’s my understanding that she previously resided in California and that she reregistered to vote in California prior to being appointed, which gave her California residency.

12
1

He could’ve picked me!
I like women too!
I’m not black but I’ve got a hell of a tan!
I’m only 60 something…. another 15 years in office easy…. and oh so much more wisdom between my ears than a 44 year old snooch smoocher!

13
10

I would pick the person with the best qualifications and not based on: gender, political affiliation, race, religious beliefs, etc.

13
1

Newsom blew it. He should have selected a conservative republican – someone who would have voted to have Biden removed from office after the House impeaches him. That way, Newsom could have been the democratic nominee for president in 2024.

13
11

well put!

3
6

well put!

1
9

WEPPIN,
.
If Governor Newsom had chosen a conservative Republican for the US Senate, that would’ve given Republicans 50 seats in the US Senate, that’s 17 seats short of being able to convict and remove an impeached president from office. President Biden likely wouldn’t be removed from office and Governor Newsom would then never win the Democratic Party nomination for president because he gave away a Senate seat to the opposition party.

12

Keep holding your breath for that impeachment.

Do you somehow think the idiot republicans in the House are any less eager to approve Article(s) of Impeachment against Biden than the idiot democrats were to approve articles against Trump?

I am offended that the talk was all about the replacement HAVING to be a black female. Why? What happened to selecting based on qualifications? Armstrong and Getty nailed it this morning: she checked all the boxes—female, black, lesbian and communist. God save us!

12
2

Anyone but who Grease Ball would pick.

8
2

..she has a second home here

1
5

But she does not live in California … so how is she being selected to represent us? Oh yeah, the rules don’t apply to Newscum.

She lives in Maryland … not California. She has to re register to vote in California, per Newscum office … that says it all, she does not live in California and has not for years.

She automatically does not get my vote now … she got this office through a loophole. She did not earn it and I doubt at this time she deserves it.

14
3

PARENT,
.
She reregistered to vote in California before being appointed by Governor Newsom which gave her California residency.

13
2

Ok

Some news sources say she has yet to re register, the ones I originally saw; others say she did it before the appointment. Thank you for making me look deeper into her.

But let’s get this straight, she registers to vote in a statue in which she does not live in to increase her political standing. Yep, she has a house here, but her home has been Maryland since 2021 per multiple sources. The message I receive is that she can be manipulated by the political winds and will do what she has to do to get ahead. Just what we need, another airheaded political leader in this state.

4
3

We have no “leaders” in politics.

None.

Politicians work SOLELY for themselves so as to ensure their reelection.

And for the most part, the voters are too stupid to figure that out. That’s EXACTLY why this state (and this country) are heading down the $hithole.

If you’re unwilling to admit it, then you ARE the problem.

Think about it and don’t just regurgitate a party line.

PARENT,
.
Governor Newsom only announced Laphonza Butler as the person he was going to appoint to the US Senate on Sunday, October 1st, but she wasn’t sworn-in until Tuesday, October 3rd, and she reregistered to vote in California sometime in between the announcement and being sworn-in.

Apparently, California’s population is so small, there wasn’t anybody qualified to do the job. Newscum was forced to look elsewhere. Glad he was successful (sarcasm).

9
2

I hope that when Newsom runs again, he is immediately cancelled because he is a white male. See how he feels about affirmative action hires then.

9
3

How about the guy from San Ramon who was pushing to not increase AFDC for single mothers if they continue to have children after they start getting benefits, since WIC, Section XIII, and food stamps will already increase proportionately and since nobody with a job gets a raise just because they have another child? He was already in politics, so maybe he’d be interested.

1
4

Governor said he picked the best person for the job. He really meant the best black female. She must be. She doesn’t even live in CA. Black, queer, and female must be all the rage. Look how well qualified the President’s press secretary is. I would pick the best best person, even if it is a white male.

9
6

Laphonza … you just can’t make this stuff up … #RIPUSA

When did life become so surreal?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pttdENG0X78
Vote for Pedro!

Just another check-the-box politician.

Disgusting.

Lenora. The lady who works at a deli I stop at when I cheat on my proper eating. She’s wicked smaht in a wisdom kind of way, not a show off kind of way. Her crows feet seem to bracket the experience of a thousand untold stories in dark brown, almost black eyes. She’s seen and experienced humanity at its worst and at its best and she’ll brook no nonsense from anyone on anything. And somehow she makes me laugh every time I see her and I try hard to return the favor. Yeah, Lenora. That’s my vote. I’m pretty sure she’s illegal, that’s not gonna be a problem, is it?

This appointment was truely awful. This lady that runs Emily’s lost has no backround as a legislator at all. Kamala Harris, as some may recall, was a terrible Senator. She was not a skilled legislator, and she was not well liked – or held in high esteem by her Senator peers, none supported her when she ran for President. Pelosi didn’t support her, and niether did Fienstein. This appointment looks like a similiar kind of thing, you are puting somebody in a jop that is not even qualified.. Reporters will write how wonderful it is to have a African American women as US Senator – I keep reading she’s the only African American women in the Sane, and the second LBGT Senator. In todays Democratic party these things, gender, race, sexual orientation trump experience and know how. There was, in fact, a very highly qualified women – who also is LGBT – avaialable to be appointed, that’s Toni Atkins, who has great legsislative skills. She was leader of the Assembly, and she was also Senate Pro-Tem. Her name was never floated as a candidate, only because she is white. I don’t feel good about this appointment at all, the lady appointed is not qualified. I also agree with others this business of announcing only a black women would be considered for the job – Newson said this – is flat out racism and sexism. It is California’s best interest to appoint the most able person to the Senate. i am looking forward to not voting for this lady for US Senate.

So … When McCain and Palin ran, did you hold your nose and vote that ticket?

Palin was McCain’s biggest mistake. All she wanted was fame and money and her photo everywhere. Now she’s got millions of dollars, is divorced, and a native Alaskan woman got the job of Congressperson that she so wanted.

Things change and not often for the better. But at least the unworthy tend to get their comeuppance.

BEANZY,
.
In 2008, did you hold your nose and vote for the Barack Obama-Joe Biden ticket?
.
In 2008, Senator John McCain’s first choice for a runningmate was Independent Senator Joe Lieberman of Connecticut. Do you believe he was that much better and would’ve garnered a John McCain-Joe Lieberman ticket more votes from the Republican Party base?
.
If Senator John McCain had had credibility with and the support of Republican Party base voters then he wouldn’t have needed to select Governor Sarah Palin as his runningmate.
.
Yet, in 2010 former Governor Sarah Palin went to Arizona, at the request of Senator John McCain himself, to campaign for him and save both his primary and general election US Senate campaigns.
.
Former Governor Sarah Palin lost her 2022 US House race for one reason, and that was because of rank-choice voting.

They will likely appoint a transgender lesbian from the Canary Islands.

I would try to figure out what that is but it involves too much math.
