More Birds, Mosquitoes Test Positive For West Nile Virus Around Contra Costa County

The Contra Costa Mosquito and Vector Control District on Friday warned of more mosquitoes and birds that have tested positive for West Nile virus around the county.

The district said dead birds that have tested positive for the virus were found in Clayton, Concord, Crockett, Danville and Walnut Creek, while Concord and Discovery Bay also had trapped mosquitoes that tested positive for the virus.

Sentinel chickens, which are placed around the county by the district to measure the spread of the virus also tested positive recently for the virus in Oakley and Holland Tract, an island in the Delta in East Contra Costa County.

In all, 50 dead birds, 18 groups of trapped mosquitoes and seven sentinel chickens have tested positive for West Nile virus in the county this year, according to the vector control district.

With the season changing from summer to fall Friday night, the district sought to remind residents that mosquitoes will still be a problem until daily low temperatures consistently drop below 55 degrees in the region.

“The risk of disease transmission persists, and residents should continue to take precautions to avoid mosquito bites and eliminate sources of standing water on their properties,” district scientific program manager Steve Schutz said in a statement.

Since 2003, 77 people in the county have been diagnosed with West Nile virus. In 2006, two people in the county died from the virus. Most people infected with West Nile do not feel sick, but about 1 in 5 develop a fever and other systems, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

People can report dead birds — often an indicator of the virus — by phone at (877) WNV-BIRD or online at https://westnile.ca.gov/report.php.

Liberal Logic:
.
“Out of an abundance of caution”… Senator Scott Wiener (D-SF), will ask Gov. Newsolini to issue an emergency order to lock down all wild birds for 30 days.
.
Follow the science!!!

Hey enough already about Newsom and other liberals. We know you don’t like them. When conservatives were in control, they messed California up, that’s why they got and always get voted out. You constantly complain but offer no real solutions. They are following science unlike your conservative nominees that never get voted in. Get a life.

No, you wont bully me into silence. I will continue to highlight liberal idiocy and the idiocy of your party members who have turned CA into an over-regulated nanny state rife with rampant crime, illegal aliens, soft justice, racism, divisiveness, and “woke” policies.

There are liberal commentators even on KPFA who don’t like Newsom. This is not really a left/right issue. It’s an issue about how corrupt government has become. So now people are even wary about how things like West Nile are handled. Also have your facetious meter nearby so you know where folks are razzing government officials. Remember too that “officials” are supposed to be civil servants and serve us not us serve them. Overreaching and overtaxing has become a problem even on the county level and it’s good for people to speak up. That’s how society is supposed to work.

You must really have your head in the sand to not recognize Sarcasm. You remind me of the Designs for the Palm Springs AIDS Memorial.

Liberals suck. Still crying about Trump while telling you to shut up about the nightmare running California at this very moment. They are blind to the extreme homelessness, crime, and real issues the state of California and working Americans face. They are the absolute worst. No, we won’t ever shut up. You will tho.

How did the conservatives mess up California? Blanket statements should never be used, as they come off as lazy. Asking for a friend.

Regarding party control, problems of last 31 years appear attributable to DEMs

.
Is already known educational system in CA is severely lacking.
It is however highly adept at turning out,
generalizing shallow thinkers resulting in election of DEMs.

.. and they must wear N95 masks whenever withing 6 ft of other fowl

Would you rather be:

A) Sentinel Chicken
B) Canary In A Coal Mine
C) Rooster At A Cockfight

I’m curious how they “place sentinel chickens” without them getting attacked by raccoons or other urban wildlife

why is there so many more mosquitoes this year? for the last 2 years i have noticed a pretty big increase in presense of mosquitoes here in concord

When are they going to lock us down to “FLATTEN THE CURVE”?
