September is Pedestrian Safety Month in California and the Concord Police Department encourages everyone on our roads to care for one another and keep pedestrians safe from crashes and injuries.
Based on data projections from the Governors Highway Safety Association, 7,508 pedestrians were killed in traffic crashes in the U.S. in 2022, the highest number since 1981. In California, pedestrian deaths account for more than 25% of all traffic deaths.
“There’s a lot happening on our roads, and everyone deserves to get to their destination safely,” Lt. Gregory Rodriguez “Drivers need to be aware of people who are walking. Please slow down and never drive impaired. We all have places to go, so let’s remember that safety is a shared responsibility.”
To promote the safety of people walking, Concord Police Department will conduct traffic safety operations focused on the most dangerous driver behaviors that put the safety of pedestrians at risk. These violations include speeding, making illegal turns, failing to yield and running stop signs or signals.
Concord Police Department offers safe driving and walking tips, including staying off the phone when behind the wheel or walking.
Drivers:
- Do not speed, and slow down at intersections. Be prepared to stop for pedestrians at marked and unmarked crosswalks.
- Avoid blocking crosswalks while waiting to make a right-hand turn.
- Never drive impaired.
Pedestrians:
- Be predictable. Use signalized crosswalks where drivers may anticipate foot traffic.
- Watch for approaching vehicles and practice due care crossing the street. At 30 mph, a driver needs at least 90 feet to stop.
- Make it easier for drivers to see you at night – wear light colors, reflective material and use a flashlight.
- Be careful crossing streets or entering crosswalks at night or on busier streets with higher speed limits.
I’m all for public safety and hope it helps, but I think we need more than 12 months in a year just to keep up with all the names.
Yes pedestrians should not be hitting cars I agree.
.
“care”?
.
Oh, puh-lease!
.
Such a bleeding heart plea!!
Good luck with asking people to be courteous.
Wow. This PSA includes advice for pedestrians. Usually it’s just the big bad car at fault. No way it could be the oblivious person with their nose in their phone
Try putting policeman at North Bart entrance and Panoramic Drive. You have speeders and a constant flow of drivers making illegal u turns. It is constant illegal activity.
Common sense crap .Really an insult to your intelligence masked as ‘do goody-ness’ We need a whole month for this? How would the police like to be reminded not to shoot people without cause? A month to remind government workers not to be rude or lazy? Or stores not to try and cheat customers? The list goes on. Reminds me of when Obama told people to properly inflate their tires to save gas.
.
Behave as a responsible motorist.
.
Behave as a responsible pedestrian.
.
It’s up to YOU, individually.
Why, oh why, drivers stop at the right turn lane when the light to turn right is green!?
Because they can’t run it if it’s not red.
.
Cuz sometimes a dirtbag to your left is gonna run his/her red light.
.
@12A
I get that! But not making a right turn throughout the whole time the light is green?
.
Oh my… Lemme guess… in a Prius?
.
PESFG : It’s a conspiracy to drive you insane. And we’re all in on it
This is a “me first” society.
Takes more than a PSA to get people to change.
..and don’t forget “entitled” … pedestrians still play chicken with a 6,000 lb vehicle
This news is brought to you by the state that legalized jaywalking.
Auto versus pedestrian. Auto wins every time.
Concord PD forgot to post advice for motorcyclist.
How about look before you step out in the street and maybe put the phone down. might help
Stop. Look and Listen. This was taught to children. Every little bit helps.
