Needs Assessment Of Older Californians Being Conducted Through End Of August

A statewide needs-assessment of Californians older than 55 is being conducted for the first time through the state’s Department of Aging, to gauge residents’ priorities in certain areas of livability and help inform future programs that serve that growing population.

The online assessment became available to all Californians Aug. 14, after initially being mailed only to a limited number of randomly selected residents, according to Sara Eisenberg, a spokesperson for the California Department of Aging.

The Community Assessment Survey for Older Adults asks residents about needs and satisfaction in six areas, which include community design, employment and finances, equity and inclusivity, health and wellness, information and assistance, and productive activities.

The survey can be accessed in multiple languages through Monday at polco.us/californiaopen23.

Past needs-assessments have been conducted locally, through nonprofit or public agencies that are designated through legislation as Area Agencies on Aging, or AAAs.

Those surveys can now be better informed by getting responses from residents statewide, according to Clay Kempf, executive director of the Seniors Council, the AAA for Santa Cruz and San Benito Counties.

“We want to see the results from the state needs-assessment and then see if there’s anything in particular we want to focus on or emphasize, and I think that ability will give us much better information in the long run,” Kempf told the Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors this month.

The survey also helps California secure its membership in AARP’s Network of Age-Friendly States and Communities, which provides members with information and guidance on building communities that maximize livability for residents of all ages.

By 2030, about 10.8 million, or a quarter of all California residents, will be over 60 years old, according to projections from the state.

Can I ask for a 1/2 Cord of Olive and 1/2 of Cherry?

Would be wonderful for my Livability……

I needs the state of California to leave me the hell alone, dang nabbit!

24

What are they up to? It can’t be for the good of its senior citizens. Our goverment as it is, is not here to help us.

They are looking for pet projects to help the lower tier of society, who have nothing and only leech off the system. That way, they can continue to make them dependent on the government while receiving a ton of money through kickbacks and fraud.

The story is the same with many of us older folks. We would like to downside but we don’t know where to move? Many have relatives usually younger who live in the area. I remember when it was reasonable for such people to move someplace in the area which of course gets snapped by someone who wants to move closer to their commute. I can’t blame them. We need to seize the government back from the woke sillies who live in fantasy land.
.
When people ask why we haven’t moved out of California, well isn’t the weather mild in the Bay Area? Other areas might be too extreme. My relatives who grew up here are angry that they feel they are being pressured out of where they grew up (by the way they are all in their 60s).
.
Maybe the solution is for the state to crash and burn so it can be started over again.

With the dems in control, it will crash soon. But, when they remain in control, there will be no chance to re-build.

As an “older Californian”, I think I can speak for many others when I say we do not need your Programs. We grew up in a time when we worked for everything we have and planned ahead for the future. We took care of our kids and didn’t expect free backpack giveaways or free lunches when they were young…….. or loan forgiveness when they went on to college. You want input on “community design” ? Ok – We bought homes in cities we could afford and took pride in maintaining them. We didn’t demand housing in areas out of our price range. We didn’t choose to have homeless or low- income high rises forced into our neighborhoods and lowering our property values. “Employment and finances” ? Probably wouldn’t have to worry about that if California would stay out of our lives. ”Equity and inclusiveness” ? If the government and media would stop harping on differences and trying to separate people, we’d be fine. “Health”? Uh, maybe if we weren’t paying for the health needs of everyone else we could afford our own. “Assistance” and “activities” ? Are you going to put us in day care now? Thanks but no thanks to all of your Program offerings. California politicians have done enough to ruin our golden years already.

Yabut, many might want to get a second opinion even if they are an amateur real estate agent (or a real estate agent like I know that is trying to sort this out). It’s the developers who build the monster homes for profit instead of building reasonable sized houses. And what are you going to do with a big house once the kids have moved out and bought their own home? It doesn’t have to be a government program either, just other opinions to look into. Yeah, government is now sick and crazy. We should overthrow it instead put up with it. But most are apathetic when it comes to us. Remember our protests against the 1% and “occupy”? Both sides participated in that. What happened?

Well said!

I concur emphatically.

.
We need State legislators and State government in general to stop coming up with “bright ideas” that increases taxes, fees, and personal costs.
.
STOP IT!!

The only bright idea needs to be making people self-sufficient through hard work, NOT handouts.

We need a government reduction program, kind of like bariatric surgery for the entire CA Boss Tweed machine.

2

Notice there aren’t any questions about personal safety?
Yeah, those of us over 55 would like to feel safe in our communities. In other words, do something about crime!

If If I get everything the illegal aliens get, I’d be in pretty good shape

another mechanism to pass taxpayer money around to “friends” with another cradle to grave scheme. How about just making sure roads are paved and criminals prosecuted, and let we adults live our lives without your “guiding” hand.

Department of Aging, How many Departments do we need at what cost? Stop the madness Vote.

Most departments have a department.
They hold meetings, facilitate focus groups, enjoy complimentary “working” lunches, collate data, and generate long term, multi-year strategic plans to nowhere.
What do seniors need?
A decent economy, historic inflation rates, and reduced taxes. It’s not rocket science.

I’m not old enough for the assessment. I’m just here to say fix the damn roads.

I’m from the government and I’m here to help.”

Took the poll. Very easy to do and quick to select (pull down) answers.

Questions centered around senior citizen’s health and mental wellness; access to health and mental health care; whether taking care of another (infirm) adult or (healthy) grandchild; community and involvement in said community; access to medical care, food, and community events; whether working or volunteering; and so on.

An how much personally identifying information did they demand?

I’m a 76-year-old homeowner, widow, parent, and grandparent. The county library loans me books for free and offers many free events for me and the kids. YV Library hosts my book club for free. BART gives me a senior discount to go to SF and Berkeley where museums and many theatres offer me a senior discount. Local movie theatres have $5 days that are even less expensive than the senior discount. Concord, Clayton, Pleasant Hill, Walnut Creek, and Orinda offer free outdoor concerts May-September. I have been taking classes through Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at CSUEB, Concord for over 20 years (scholarolli.com). It is the least expensive of all the 25 OLLIs in the country. Fortunately, the job I held for over 35 years came with a pension. Fortunately, when I wanted to earn some funds to support extra fun, I could work as a substitute teacher in local high schools. Those in this stream who say to leave the state need to look around and see what it offers seniors.

Not everyone is as fortunate as you. I know many people who cannot afford to live here because of high costs for housing, rent, utilities, gasoline, food, taxes and a host of other expensive items. Why anyone would want to stay in California, if they can leave, is beyond me. Go beyond the state borders and you will see much nicer and kinder people, a much less expensive cost of living and people who actually care about one another. Sorry but California just plain sucks nowadays.

The second they mention equiity they may as well just call it evil.
Even the 3 letter commenter people admit equity is NOT equality.
Completely different.

Department of Aging? You gotta be kidding me!

Bloodsucking government agencies trying to justify their existence.

🖕

Needs? we need political leaders that are objective, reasonable, logical and not just looking out for their own career but for the constituents they supposedly represent… we need DAs that stop the revolving door that bring a consequence to crime…. we need to stop this woke crxx and cancel culture …. we need leaders that will stand up to the likes of Russia, China, Iran & N Korea …we need leaders that actually support the Constitution as written without everybody’s attempt to change it to fit their agenda and pocketbook ….. let’s start there – if anybody from Claycord is willing to run and support this you have my vote and I’ll volunteer for your campaign ….. takers?

I wouldn’t mind the job …. Just couldn’t stand the co-workers.

Well? What did they assess? Bank accounts? Covid Jabs? Mammograms? The racial make up of your home?
