On August 18, 2023, around 3:27 a.m., the Martinez Police Department received a report of a video alarm at Velvet, a cannabis dispensary, located at 4808 Sunrise Drive. While enroute, officers were advised of multiple subjects at the business along with two vehicles.
Officers arrived on scene around 3:32 a.m. and one of the vehicles, described as a white SUV, fled the scene. Officers broadcast that shots were fired and there was an assault on an officer. The second vehicle attempted to flee and then crashed into a fire hydrant. The two occupants of the vehicle were transported to the hospital.
Additional law enforcement agencies responded to secure the scene. The Martinez Police Department initiated an investigation with the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office in accordance with the countywide protocol for officer-involved shootings. One officer is receiving treatment at the hospital for what is believed to be a minor injury.
The investigating agencies have responded with extensive resources to determine exactly what took place. The area where the incident occurred remains closed while crime scene investigators collect evidence. The officers involved were wearing body-worn cameras and footage is being reviewed as part of the investigation.

Marijuana dispensaries are cash-only businesses. Federal law doesn’t allow them to use banks or accept credit cards. This place seemed to have a lot of customers, so criminals might assume the place would have a lot of cash on hand. A place called Stiizy is located not far away down Pacheco Blvd and it has been robbed multiple times over the past couple of years. The criminals aren’t going to these places to load up on gummies.

So this whole thing is screwed up from the start. Please do not get me wrong here about how people find their peace but if they did not allow these places to be legal then this would not be an issue. These places should have active security 24-7 as they are a target for this. In this situation there should be no circumstances where an officer should have to be involved in something that could potentially cause them harm. Piss poor planning by the goons in Ca capitol.

Isn’t this one of the canabis outlets that former Rep. George Miller’s son George Jt. opened up? As I understand George Miller himself, our former Congressman, is a silent partner in this canabis store, if not this one, than another one. In my town we have a couple of these stores – which draw criminal types and drug users. It’s not a good idea to allow these canabis outlets to pop up in suburban towns, they have had these types of stores in Oakland and SF – two cities that have become cesspools. We should, as a society, discourage drug use, not to promote drug use. This belief that pot smokers are all “nice people”, only using pot to ease pain is just a lot of nonsense. Criminals types use and abuse drugs, they traffic in drugs too. Criminal types break into canabis stores – all the time. Sadly, in my town of Concord, city officials were so enthusiastic to get in on the tax revenue canabis stores generate that these stores were greenlighted with maximum speed (Normally Concord city officails move at a snail pace, but not so when it came to canabis stores)

The expansion of cannabis in the City of Concord happened for two reasons, first, the State of California changed the law so cities and counties could no longer ban dispensaries from their jurisdictions, and second, at the time there were three Concord City Councilmembers who were pro-cannabis and pro-dispensaries.
They moved at a snail’s pace until the bribes started flowing and the friends, family, donors and silent partnerships got arranged. Then overnight all the guidelines, restrictions and regulations went out the window.
