A third dead bird and a third group of mosquitoes have tested positive for West Nile virus, the Contra Costa Mosquito and Vector Control District said Friday.
The bird, a California scrub jay, was collected from Oakley, joining dead birds found in Brentwood and Martinez last month, according to the district. The mosquitoes were trapped in Brentwood; previous groups were found in Discovery Bay.
Since 2005, 75 people in Contra Costa County have been diagnosed with West Nile virus. In 2006, two people died from the disease, which can be transmitted by mosquitoes from infected birds.
Symptoms of the illness include fever, headache, body aches, vomiting, diarrhea or rash.
The control district said it will be conducting surveillance and control in the areas where the dead bird and mosquitoes were found.
