Union Workers Approve New 3 Year Contract With MDUSD

Non-teaching staff of the Mount Diablo Unified School District will see their wages increase this year after union members ratified a new three-year contract with the school district, Teamsters Local 856 announced Monday.

Aside from wage increases, the newly-ratified contract calls for a guaranteed compensation study on the majority of worker classifications, and improved contract language to protect members.

The approval of this deal also ends months of negotiations between union members and the school district. Earlier this year, talks had stalled over pay and staffing issues.

“This contract is a huge win for our members and takes us in the right direction of attracting and maintaining talent here at Mount Diablo Unified School District,” MDUSD custodial lead worker and bargaining team member Noven Feria said in a statement.

Teamsters Local 856 Union Representative Mark Jones thanked the negotiating team and members who gave their support throughout the negotiation process.

“Our Mount Diablo Unified School District Teamsters showed their true character throughout the negotiations, never swaying on their commitment to our members,” Jones said in a statement.

Teamsters Local 856 represents over nearly 500 workers at MDUSD, including custodial, food service, transportation, and maintenance and skilled trades workers.

I thank the Lord every day that my son’s out of that school district!

Why do you feel that way?

Both my kids are now in private schools. There is a special place in hell for the teachers and their union that stuck our kids in front of a monitor for 2 years.

Teamsters are some of the hardest working employees at the district. They deserve it.

So how much of our tax dollars are going to MDUSD nonteaching union members?

Where are the details?

I’m glad the Unions are happy.

Will those of us who pay taxes be happy too?

Are you seriously upset understaffed Custodians that start at $17.60 are receiving an increase?

@ABE, if you don’t know what the non-teaching positions do on a campus by now….you will probably never be happy.

I mean, you are worried about making the tax layers happy when those unions members are also tax payers and what does meeting your expectations have to do with education or maintenance standards?

Non-teaching members? So all the teachers.

Nice snark. Custodians, food service workers and skilled trades people take care of the sites and the students. 30 elementary schools, 9 Middle Schools, and 5 high schools. Do you take issue with them, or just the teachers, which this article is not about?
Out of curiosity, where do you teach amateurishly?

@TPC
I agree….it was a nice snark.

Just the teachers. I’d like the trade guys to take over in fact. They’d show the kids something about hard work and real life. I am a retired amateur teacher that used to teach at home during the gestapos internment.
