ConFire has responded to at least 26 fires between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. on Independence Day.

Most, if not all of the fires, are believed to have been started by illegal fireworks.

Currently, a 12 acre vegetation fire is burning off Rudgear Road in Walnut Creek. Some homes are voluntarily evacuating.

UPDATE: Contra Costa Fire has just arrived to the scene of a 12-acre and growing fire near Mount Diablo in Walnut Creek, ConFire spokesperson Steve Hill said.

The blaze is in the area of 1900 Whitecliff Way and “has the potential to become a dangerous fire,” said Hill.

No evacuations have been ordered at this time, but Hill said that some residents in the area are evacuating on their own.

Cal Fire has been called in to assist, Hill said.

Residents in the area can monitor possible evacuations by going to CWSalerts.com.

UPDATE #2: Forward progress on the fire near Mount Diablo has been stopped. All crews are committed to mop up operations.

I called the illegal fireworks hot line and left a message for next 4th of July. I figured that would give the police time to respond
