This is a postcard from the City of Pleasant Hill.
It shows an aerial view of the old Montgomery Ward’s shopping mall. The photo was taken in the early ’60s, before the once popular Dome movie theater was constructed in ’67.
The shopping center is no longer a mall, and the dome has been torn down. The center now houses Kohl’s, Dick’s, and a variety of other stores, and is now known as the Crossroads Shopping Center.

Bought a sweet Remington auto-loader 12-guage there in the early 1980s … and later a single shot 20-guage. Me and my little brother used to go out to the Delta and shoot clay pigeons. Loved that store. When I joined the Corps, I once hit 94/100 shooting trap at Pendleton’s range. Our team won a contest on base in 1989. The team celebration was epic.
They should’ve never torn down the dome it was the best place to see a movie! Remember seeing Return of the Jedi amongst others there.
I have often wondered about that open field that is to the right of the parking lot in this picture. Even today it’s an open field. For a few years there was a gas station/quick-mart in a little triangle of land to the northeast of the field but that’s now gone when Buskirk was straightened.
Most likely “contaminated”
Pre-BART
The dome theater looks like it’s under construction in the picture which dates the picture around 1967 or 1968. BART was under construction at the time with the trackways and many overcrossings already built in this area. The BART tracks are visible in the picture. They start at the right edge about a third of the way down and looks like a fuzzy gray line. The straight line angling up and off the right edge looks like Bancroft.
Does anyone remember when actor Robert Conrad was at this Montgomery-Wards in the late 1960’s? He was in character and dressed as his “Jim West” character from “The Wild Wild West.”

I forgot to say he was signing autographs on a picture of himself as “Jim West.”
…. sure is better than the “stuff” there now… JoJo … got a 30-30 there too
We had just moved out here. Look at how few cars are on the freeways. Look at how there are are fewer and smaller trees.
Kinda cool!
In the early 70’s we used to ride our bikes to the Dome to watch the matinee. Would buy cheap candy in the drug store there and bring our own bag of homemade popcorn. Unlike today after the movie our bikes were actually still there hahaha
I remember Monkey Wards, and the beach ball that floated in the air, at their vacuum cleaner department.
