Major Delays Expected In The Area Of Monument & Cowell Due To Intersection Change-Overs

The City of Concord will be performing intersection change-overs for the Monument Blvd. Class 1 Path project at Monument and Cowell today and on Thursday, June 22, at Monument and Systron Dr.

As a result, traffic signal systems at both intersections will be down on their respective days from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

If traveling in the area, please use caution and observe construction signage to ensure the safety of you and others when approaching the intersections.

Following the completion of activities outlined for next week, the dedicated right-turn lane from Cowell to Galindo will be restored by the end of the month.

Absolutely foolish to eliminate the right turn lane from Cowell to Monument. The whole project with the weird sidewalk and the elimination of any shoulder is asinine, in my opinion.
I am open to hearing the logic if any (and esthetics is not a logical answer).

Even though they claim to restore the right turn lane, it eliminates the ability to merge into a dedicated lane without having to go through the light. That’s not progress or improvement!

Sidewalk appears wide enough to drive a car on . . . . . . . “Wait for it”

Another Ruined Intersection.

Remember, yesterday’s “conspiracy theory”? It’s what you’re Living today. Keep being in denial.

I couldn’t agree more. Now Cowell Rd. is a mess. Absolute idiots at the city. The intersection has worked well for so many years now it a choke point.

This is the most absurd intersection in Concord. The lanes on Monument are so narrow that trucks have to encroach on the other lane. Bicycles are in a traffic lane creating traffic jams and driver frustrations, let alone the bicyclist’s safety. The right turn from Monument onto Cowell is so tight that a driver feasibly can only turn right into the left lane. There is no longer a right turn lane from Cowell onto Monument so the traffic backs up into the prior intersection creating a jam. Yes, it looks beautiful, but this is beyond absurd traffic engineering. Thanks, Concord, for another traffic jam. The City spent this money to create traffic jams while we drive in a city filled with potholes and neglected roads.

You describe the new intersection perfectly.
The design seems to be around not needing a car in the future but I think you may not want a car in the future if there are more designed like this in the future.
I think maybe Traffic Engineering was asleep at the wheel.
Also, why the wide sidewalks?
Looks like there are plans for a stadium nearby.
In the news soon ” Vehicle lands in skateboard park after speeding on new pedestrian pathway”.

I’ve avoided the whole stretch of Monument Blvd entirely for last 43 years and will still do so.
I did however ride with someone last week who went Cowell left on Monument going to Costco (which is crazy), and that project is just stupid. What’s more stupid is waiting in line for 25 minutes to get Costco gas to save $3 for their 15 gal fill-up. What was even more entertaining is the people pulling on the wrong side of the gas pump and then trying to stretch the hose over their car trying to lock it into their filler and then after it’s pumping gas they jerk on the hose as it’s filling to get it off of their car and it pops out of the filler throwing gas all over the place.

Worst construction project I’ve ever seen. Totally screwed up two intersections. Money could have been better spent fixing the roads. Potholes are everywhere on main Concord throughfates. Can’t believe the city thinks these roads are acceptable.

Why is Concord so opposed to pedestrian bridges? This was a perfect spot to test out some concepts that could be used across town.

according to the city, it was to make pedestrians safer while crossing both intersections (Cowell and Systron). Apparently there have been studies showing that those “slip lanes” that used to be there required the pedestrian to navigate 3 separate crossings instead of just 1, and cars wouldn’t slow or stop in the slip lane and plow into pedestrians at the corners.

With the new “hobo highway” from Systron to Cowell, they’re expecting more pedestrian users than ever before (which I don’t believe) to get to BART (which nobody rides anymore).

Cars and traffic be damned, they are the evil of having a city in the first place.

What a joke, City of Concord planing is, first down town less parking, now Cowell rd, with no more right hand turn lane, traffic backed up every night. All for the 6 people that ride there bikes, we need to vote them out of office.

Educated fools. Who designed this obstruction to the flow. American designed and built use to mean quality. Disgusting. Right up their with Gavin and the gang.

I personally love the new design to this intersection, making it so much safer for pedestrians and bicyclists. It will serve the disadvantaged community well on monument blvd.

C’MON MAN !
.
Those are pandemic sidewalks.
Have to be ready for next time six foot spacing is required.
