Bay Area Politicians In Favor Of Bringing California’s Gun Safety Laws To The Rest Of The U.S.

Federal and state politicians joined together in the Bay Area this week to voice support for bringing California’s gun laws to the rest of the country but many acknowledged the challenges in getting such legislation passed.

Speakers at the event at United Playaz, a violence prevention and youth development center, praised California’s gun laws, which include universal background checks, raising the firearm purchase age to 21, instituting a firearm purchase waiting period and barring the civilian purchase of assault weapons.

The event comes a week after Gov. Gavin Newsom proposed a constitutional amendment to enshrine those gun safety measures on a federal level.

“Sensible gun laws work, we’re proving it in California,” said Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis.

She called the state’s measures the “strongest in the country” and pointed to its low gun death rate — 44th out of all states, according to 2021 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data.

U.S. Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-San Francisco, spoke about an assault weapon ban that passed “over and over” in the House but couldn’t get the 60 votes needed to pass in the Senate due to its rules allowing for filibusters that can delay or prevent a vote on a piece of legislation.

“We must elect enough senators to get rid of the 60-vote rule,” Pelosi said. “And when we do, we can pass all of this gun violence prevention legislation.”

“The only place that gun violence prevention is a partisan issue is in the halls and in the houses of the United States Congress,” said Rep. Mike Thompson, D-St. Helena.

Other speakers at the event included Rep. Barbara Lee, D-Oakland; Rep. Jared Huffman, D-San Rafael; Rep. Kevin Mullin, D-South San Francisco; San Francisco Police Chief William Scott; and advocates from the gun safety group Moms Demand Action.

Catch and release criminals? It is a God given RIGHT to defend ones life. Pssssssst. It’s the criminals that perpetuate crime.

Try bringing them to Oakland first.

If only gun laws worked with those who break the laws…

This is so asinine I cannot find the words. The infringement of the second amendment is a driving force for me as I shop for my out of state forever home.

Gun safety is locking up those who use guns for illegal purposes. Why are liberals in denile? The other problem is the mentally ill. Stop and frisk is the best solution. You get illegal guns a drug dealers.

41
6

Just sending them to prison after they’ve killed a dozen people doesn’t seem likely to solve the problem of the many mass shootings now happening.

8
19

You’re right. We have severe cases of mental issues. Unless they are dealt with these killings cannot be controlled. The country is not unified and that could be a reason for the mental cases. Allowing crime to get out of control promotes more crime.

None of the measures stated world do a thing to address premeditated mass murder.

Because they are working so well here and/or so much better here, right? LOL

Hmm, will they include defunding the POLICE ? ? ? ?
.
Let’s look at chicago,

If sensible gun laws are working so well in California, why was there a car to car shooting near Fisherman’s Wharf last evening?

Go back up top and read the article to which you are replying. California has a serious shooting problem with gun violence and we hear about new incidents every day. As bad as our problem with gun violence is, 43 states have a higher rate of shooting deaths than ours. It looks to me like the U.S. has a serious problem with misuse of guns. No one is likely to take away your guns or mine, but there needs to be some limits on what firearms people can possess and who can own them.

17

Actually California is 2nd in gun deaths this year.

You mean suicides,so be clear about that.
They are always the majority of gund in the USA,but people like aunt b have a different way of thinking.Guns stop people from jumping off a bridge or in front of a truck.Suicides will never stop, only increase in Calif. Its so awful right now, people are leaving voluntarily.

typo
-majority of gun deaths

Look behind the gun at t who is holding it. That’s the problem. Most own one to feel powerful because they are weak and scared of their own shadow or want to commit crimes. .Please tell me any other reason you need one unless you are in law enforcement.

Bam, so on point as to hurt!

Not my point to hurt. A question was asked and I felt the need to answer it. No harm no foul Aunt B.

Sure thing! Let’s just do away with the entire Bill of Rights!
Why should anyone be allowed to say anything contrary to official government policy?
And everyone should have to worship at whatever cult the government is promoting this week.
And why should citizens need the right to gather except to praise dear leader.
And Lord knows, nobody deserves to expect the redress of grievances in this people’s paradise.

AUNT BARBARA,
.
Try living in rural America.

15

AUNT BARBARA,
.
Try living in rural America, where it’s upon individuals, their family members, and neighbors to protect each other, because the Sheriff/Deputies aren’t minutes away, like Police Officers are in urban and suburban America. Try protecting crops from herds of wild hogs without firearms. Try protecting livestock from coyotes and wolves without firearms. Try protecting crops from other menacing and destructive wildlife and invasive species without firearms. You obviously don’t care about those Americans that provide the nation with its food supply. Firearms are necessary for self protection, crop protection, livestock protection, hunting, and protecting the citizenry from an out of control government.
.
Look at your first sentence, you aren’t concerned about those individuals that are using firearms to commit crimes, you have lumped everyone together, you’re concerned about those individuals “holding” firearms, and not what they’re doing with firearms.
.
Governor Gavin Newsom was correct in saying we need a 28th Amendment to the Constitution, he was just wrong about what that 28th Amendment should say, it should clearly state that “it is an INDIVIDUAL right of the people to keep and bear arms,” and it should clearly define “shall not be infringed,” so that biased and partisan Judges can’t so easily redefine the Constitution and strip Americans of their rights, as they have been doing for decades.

Your “thoughts” are clueless, banal, and not your own. This has been the standard sneer from anti-gun types for years. You just forgot to add the genitalia compensation jab. This attack pattern is meant to shame people who wish to have the right to protect themselves with the best means available. “You’re right, aunt Barbara, I’ll give Newsom my rights, I don’t want to be seen as ‘weak and scared of my own shadow.'” Give me a break.

It’s telling that the Democrats have basically ignored the SCOTUS ruling in Bruen. They don’t care a whit about constitutionality or our rights. They will trample them the instant they have the power to do do. In their self righteousness, I don’t think they understand they will undo this country if they ever force this through, on a simple majority party line vote, no less. It’s no different than if Republicans forced through an abortion ban in the same way. Blue states would openly defy it, and the feds would either have to go in and enforce it against the will of the people, leading to civil war, or they would have to allow it to be openly broken, leading to the undermining and disintegration of the union.

Guns are a fact of living in the United States. It’s a God given right, in plain English, right there in the Bill of Rights. Either respect those rights, or this country is over.

Are you clueless as to the reason people would own a gun?Self defense? When danger is seconds away the police are minutes away?
Scared of their own shadow?
Are you serious?
Sounds like guns scare you,and that is dangerous.

10
2

You are so misguided…..ever read history???

Hitler?
Stalin?
Mao?
Idi Amin??

The quickest way to subjugate a population is to disarm them. That was the first thing all those dictators did.

11

maybe start with making murder and mayhem illegal again…… I guess that is too hard, “better go for the low hanging fruit (guns)”

People own guns because they are weak? That’s a pretty unintelligent response.

must be all the strong ones getting robbed and victimized then.
Whodathunkit?

So ya want to export your laws federally? Yeah? How well are they working here? Oh, not so
good? How arrogant can you get? Seems to me we just had a shootout on Pier 39 on June-
teenth/Dad’s Day. Nobody with any common sense is going to listen to the CA left on any
issue.

It’s hilarious they think their gun laws have anything to do with relatively low gun crime. Every gangbanger and criminal has a gun here. With 80% receivers, they can be ordered online and finished at home with no paperwork. We see those guns all the time here on Claycord. The black market here is huge, and you can get much funner stuff there than at the gun store. There are thousands of unregistered machine guns in CA. The bootleg Glock full auto switches are everywhere. It’s only us law abiding that don’t have access to that stuff.

I don’t know what acounts for the relative guns crime rates, but it sure as heck isn’t the laws.

Before the Postal Service cracked down on sending guns through the mail, there were many American soldiers and Marines in Vietnam that took AK-47’s, and M-16’s from the dead, and sent them home to the US through the mail. This also happened during WWII, a lot of German, Japanese, and American guns were mailed home. I have a friend that has a Thompson submachine gun that his dad gave him, his dad took it off a dead GI and sent home during WWII.

Well of course they wanna do that, stupid Dido’s.
First all the car politicians need to crawl out of the toilet first and that’ll never happen.

13

Gun violence is performed by violent criminals. What are we doing about violent criminal prevention?

36
3

The laws aren’t the problem – the revolving door DA’s and do nothing progressive incumbents are the real problem… the other states want Calif’s problems? yeah, right

28

All gun laws are illegal. SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED. Molon Labe……..

17
4

Every day I read about gun violence in East Oakland so how are the gun laws working for you Gavie, Eleni, and Bonta? Since the Bruen decision by the Supreme Court one year ago, how many shootings have you heard about by CCW permit holders? I rest my case!!! Mental illness runs rampant in Sacramento…

23
1

Auntie B, Try Self defense and to control an tyrannical government. Please take the time to read the Constitution. Too many good Americans died defending you and the country with GUNS….

19
3

I believe every American man, woman, and child should be armed. I remember when Concord used to be safe!!

27
4

Yes background checks safety tests and waiting periods should be the way its done in every state – im a gun owner and legal gun owners shouldnt have a problem with it

5
8

Shouldn’t we then apply those standards to every right guaranteed by the Constitution? Before you speak or worship, pass a background check? Vote?

2
1

I know where a lot of the other states are gonna tell them to stick their new gun laws

10

What part of “ SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED UPON” do these idiots not understand!

While the firearm death rate may be low, the number of firearm deaths is 2nd highest in the country. Large population with areas of dense levels of violence can play with the actual rate. For example, a LA Times story from December 2021 stated there were over 1400 survivors of shootings (did not report number of shootings, at least that I saw). Not even the top 10 for homicide rates by city, that was Memphis, followed by Detroit, then Milwaukee (note: these are homicide rates, not necessarily due to gun violence). I also wonder if maybe border control, instead of gun control, might reduce the level of gun violence, both in absolute numbers and in rate.

If reporting on mass shooters goes into enough depth we hear guns used were purchased legally, meaning they passed a background check. Shooter had mental problems and that required notification to FEDs that would have blocked firearms sales were not made.
.
example,
(killed 26 people and wounded 22 others )
“The Air Force failed six times to report information that could have prevented the ex-airman who killed more than two dozen people in a Texas church from purchasing a gun…”
https://tinyurl.com/ee9522hb

This topic and politicians supporting it ain’t going anywhere, it’s dead in the water, give it up smurfs..

You are either for the Constitution or you want to modify the Constitution.
The slippery slope is the modification aspect.

There are basically two type of people in society, law abiding and those who are not.
Those who are accretive to society and those who are predacious.
In the case of penitentiary, predators and prey.
.
Liberals running this state believe in extra chances and prisons are both expensive and embarrassing to them. moonbeam’s Farther Pat Brown 32nd Governor of California 1959 – 1967 had the right idea, the best possible education for every CA child. He realized educated and prepared individuals were able to make a living independent of government aid programs.
.
Children learn skills from parents, church, school and family and are prepared to be productive members of society. Those who can’t learn needed skills will learn skills of the streets and become predacious upon society.
.
DEMs these days see citizens dependent upon government for their financial well being as potential voters. Government employee or welfare recipient, it doesn’t matter. It’s about retaining power and having ability to dole out tax payer dollars to those who give them campaign contributions. The ever present flow of tax dollars to fund their experiments on citizens of CA.
.
Given what they’ve turned this state into, seems to prove two quotes by President Reagan
“It has been said that politics is the second oldest profession.
I have learned that it bears a striking resemblance to the first”.
–Ronald Reagan

.
“The best minds are not in government. If any were,
business would steal them away.”
— Ronald Reagan

California is a failed state and the rest of the nation knows it. Ill-conceived legislation is at the heart of it. The “root cause” as our inept officials are so fond of espousing.
Now they want to spread their badly written, randomly enforced laws across the country like some sort of venereal disease.
Psychological validation for the few carry’s a huge price tag for the rest of us.

Bring back the draft and selective service. Make proper self defense training, responsible gun ownership, critical thinking classes mandatory for every citizen, rich or poor, that graduates from high school. Serve a whole year either at home or abroad, like the peace corps did. Earn the right to own a firearm.

Innocent citizenry are paying the terrible price for our misguided policies, we can do better, but our corrupt leadership, corporate, political and spiritual is more interested in keeping us fighting among ourselves while profiting from our misery. It makes it easier to control us. We lost our way, we need to find it or we are all screwed.

Not only NO but f**^ NO!

A gun roster?,how anti 2nd amendment, you cant buy any decent hand gun in California, just a few that will still allow to be sold here.No Walther PPK’s or anything good. Most dont realize this till they try to buy one they saw onTV.You cant buy the gun you want in.California.They wont allow it.
Other states never have and never will want to be like California.
Because they are smart.
