The Water Cooler – Should More Stores Have “Scan & Go” So You Can Skip The Checkout Line?

The “Water Cooler” is a feature on Claycord.com where we ask you a question or provide a topic, and you talk about it.

The “Water Cooler” will be up Monday-Friday at noon.

Today’s question:

Sam’s Club has a feature on their app called “Scan & Go,” where you can scan items in the store as you put them in your cart, then pay for them on the app when you’re done, and just walk out (an employee checks your receipt on the way out).

Do you think other stores should use a “Scan & Go” feature, and if so, would you use it, or would you rather checkout the traditional way?

Talk about it….

I’m ok with it as long as there is no increased theft… if there is… then drop it

I actually prefer a live person. Most of the time they are kind but every now and then I’ll get a grumpy pants. You can always spot the person that hates their job.

100% Yes, they just need to not add the would you like to add a Tip feature. This tipping thing is getting out of control. Its taking panhandling to a new level.

Why scan and go just go?Just go no consequences..LOl

Another indication that AI is taking over jobs. No, I wouldn’t use it for a couple of reasons, the main reason being I would need the app to pay for it, and that means having my banking information on my phone, which I will never do. It also means the store will keep a record of my purchases, then hit me up with all kinds of ads. I have no idea what they will do with my information, and I don’t care, because I will never be a sucker for it. I prefer paying for everything with cash or check. That way, I have complete control over my money.
My motto: Trust no one until they have earned your trust.

NO
Don’t believe in nor will I support putting people out of work.
Just another way for companies to maximize profits.

I am thinking a few things by pass the scanner. If they hired more clerks the lines wouldn’t be so bad. Many people like them I am not a fan unless I am buying just one or two items. How do you scan carrots or broccoli?

No.
There are many seniors that would be thrilled to work retail. It’s a great way for an older person to stay engaged. Plus, the purposefully induced inflation has many people realizing they may run out of money two or three years earlier than forecasted. There are retirees looking to offset that shortfall. Let’s give them a chance.

Prefer to keep a real person on a payroll no matter how long the line.

They already have this. It’s called “Shoplift and Go”

Means you don’t have to wait for an opening at the “self checkout”. Checkout work can be very tedious. I recall at a local store where employees might groan if they were called up front to run the express checkout.
.
BTW, I was looking at a video taken at an Aldi’s in the UK where to shop you needed their app. However I think I read where this was a test Aldi’s was running. And I’m not sure the app is that invasive. BTW, CVS lets you checkout via their app but they also have checkers. If you’ve got one thing that can be especially handy rather than waiting in line. Not that I am that impatient.

You mean not scan and go?

I think it’s the greatest thing in the world. Only problem is you can’t buy alcohol using it.

Shortly after the lockdown started, I was at Sam’s Club, and the checkout line stretched all the way to the back of the store. I downloaded the app, entered my information, scanned, and paid for my stuff before the line had moved 1 cart length. Sam’s is the only place I’ll use it, but I like it.

I have used this feature the only thing that is bad is if your are buying something that needs verification like alcohol or medication then you have to go back and line up. If they have the time to check your cart on the way out they should just do the checkout themselves.

.
Yes at large popular chain stores. Get me outta there.

Already in place and coming soon near you. All products will have a disposable chip and there will be a reader tower at the door. Load up the cart and push directly out the door. Everything will be connected to your digital wallet. No more scanning by you, no more surly clerks, no more forced superficial talk.
This is where it is going. Strap yourself in and buyer beware…LOL

If so they’ll test it and decide it’s racist.
