Congressman DeSaulnier Statement On Debt Ceiling Vote – “I Voted Against This Bill Because I Refuse To Reward The Political Extortion Of The Extreme Faction Of The Republican Party”

Congressman Mark DeSaulnier (CA-10) issued the following statement on his vote on H.R. 3746, which passed the U.S. House of Representatives by a vote of 314-to-117.

“While defaulting on our debt is not an option, I voted against this bill because I refuse to reward the political extortion of the extreme faction of the Republican Party,” said Congressman DeSaulnier. “Instead of performing their constitutional duty and raising the debt ceiling to avoid economic catastrophe, the Majority held the country hostage, and refused to let it go without cuts to benefits working Americans rely on, rollbacks of environmental protections, and making it easier for the ultrawealthy to skirt tax laws. Though I am grateful to my Democratic colleagues and President Biden for keeping some of the most harmful, extreme proposals out of this bill, the fact remains that we never should have been in this crisis manufactured by Republicans in the first place.”

.
Eff you DeSaulnier.
.
Go take a long walk off a short pier.

Marks just reading the script.

It was handed to him so he could send out a statement.

He does what he’s told to do.

6

Useless fool.

Tool.

What stool pigeon, this guy is literally a dumb***.
Well, the real dumb***** are his supporters who keep him in office.

49
13

Mark would rather continue the destruction of America by the Democratic Party.
I remember when Mark declared racism a County health crisis.
Mark you are nothing more than a typical democratic race hustler.

TRUMP or DESANTIS 2024 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

59

.
Democracies are more effective when one party doesn’t get 100 percent of what it wants.
.
Don’t like the work requirement for welfare recipients, eh? It’s time for people to get off the Dems’ socio-economic plantation.
.
And Mark…. I wouldnt piss on you if you were on fire.
.

DeSaulnier fundamentally has no skill set to understand this legislation and is grasping at trivia to pretend to be taking a tough independent stand on something. I would really like him to post here and tell us based on his research how many trillion dollars the Treasury can try to sell before investors stop buying and there is a currency crisis like what happened in so many other countries swimming in debt.

43
9

You are correct. Does Greece come to mind or the asset seizure in Cyprus in 2016?

And a few more thoughts on “to do list’s” great post … How many tillions? I’ve read around 50-55. Gee, a few more simple requests Mark-o, how many (number please) illegals is enough, what’s the number for “fair share” in tax rates. Our whole federal government has basically turned into a giant machine for furthering their own agendas and self wealth. I’ve also read somewhere that historically democracies only survive around 200 to 250 years before they collapse.

It probably would have been helpful to the treasury if Congress had not given the Pentagon billions of dollars more last year than the Pentagon had requested. The Pentagon has never passed an audit: that alone should be a red flag for corruption. I blame both parties for that massive waste of taxpayer dollars.

14

KPA,
.
It doesn’t matter what The Pentagon requested for its budget last year, it was only a suggestion, Congress decides how much money the Department of Defense “needs” and what it’s spent on, even if members of Congress are doing so to protect jobs in their districts. It’s unfortunate, but that’s how our system works.

12

The same text was emailed to all Democrat Congressmen, with directions to add their pronouns of choice. Although it’s interesting they didn’t mention xenophobic, systemic, equity, or their claim that bridges are racist.

36
7

What an idiot,
Poorest member of the House because he has no concept of managing money.

31

Part of our problem is the massive give-away to uber-wealthy people thanks to self-serving Trump. Yet, when the IRS is given enough money to hire people to find the tax cheats, the far right Republicans have conniptions. If the Republicans are truly the party of “law and order” as they claim, they should want to find the cheats and get the money owed to the Treasury; that would be fiscal responsibility in action, but I sure don’t see any sign of it from the far-right of the Republican Party.

16

KPA,
.
I don’t like the Democrats and I don’t like the Republicans, but because you’re politically biased, you’re actually forcing me to defend the Republicans.
.
Why would you blame “self-serving (President) Trump” for what you call “the massive give-away to uber-wealthy people”? Democrats in the House and Senate, and President Biden, had two years to change or repeal Trump Administration era tax laws. They didn’t repeal the tax laws that you blame Republicans for, so shouldn’t you equally blame Democrats?
.
It’s so nice of you to assume your fellow Americans are “tax cheats” and that only “tax cheats” will be audited by future agents of the IRS.
.
You say the Republicans call themselves “the party of law and order,” but that doesn’t mean they view laws that increase the number of IRS agents as “just laws” and they also may oppose expanding the size of the federal government.
.
Several times you referred to “far-right Republicans” and “the far-right of the Republican Party,” which makes it appear that you view all “Republicans” as being only from the “far-right.”

Difference this time was the bill was made available to WE THE PEOPLE to read online prior to the vote.
.
Previous behavior of DEM speaker in previous congress is major reason DEMs in house are now in the minority. With crude prices held artificially high as result of biden’ actions causing inflation looking forward to 2024 vote causing DEMs to be minority party in house and senate. Along with years of fiscal damage done to America by pelosi.

27
7

I tried reading it but it was beyond my reading skill.

1

Marky, insert foot into mouth…
I heard you cancelled your town hall because you were so upset!
It’s hard to believe this guy is a highly paid California Congressman trying to represent his constituents.

27
7

He cancelled it to go vote.

16

KPA,
.
The townhall was never going to be anything but a “political event.” It was unnecessary, because a deal was always going to be made. If it was so necessary to have an “emergency townhall meeting” then Congressman Mark DeSaulnier would’ve rescheduled it after he voted. Then again, Congressman DeSaulnier’s vote on raising the debt ceiling wasn’t even needed, as he was nothing but a protest vote.

15

“However, I would have voted for this bill because I reward the political extortion of the Democratic Party,”

20
3

Mark joined other far left Democrats such as Ro Khanna, Barbara Lee, AOC in voting no on this important legislation. It’s disappointing to see him joining with the ultra-liberal crowd in putting the U.S. economy at risk just so he can raise his finger at the Republicans.

28
3

Now send proof of your post to Mrs. Pelosi so she can send you your free movie tickets.

19
3

Mark,
.
You’re in office today because you were elected to the Concord City Council as a Republican, you were appointed to the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors as a Republican by Republican Governor Pete Wilson, you were elected to the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors as a Republican, and you switched parties at the urging of then Congressman George Miller so that you could remain in office and seek higher office as a Democrat. Do you really want us to now believe that you stand by your principles? Since you were once a Republican, you’re in a better position to actually work with and negotiate with your Republican colleagues, instead you decided to play the same types of political games that you now call “Political Extortion Of The Extreme Faction Of The Republican Party.” You’re part of the problem, you’re not part of the solution.

81
5

Right on the bullseye Black Knight

25
4

Yep,
Miller flipped him like a pancake.
Mark went over to the darkside enthusiastically.
Luke Skywalker he is not.
Use the farce Mark!

That he was once a Republican just tells me how far to the right the Republican Party has moved. A lot of Republicans are becoming Independents these days because the current R’s no longer represent their views. The same is also true for the Democratic Party; it has moved more to the right than it used to be. But that is just another sign that the country is more of an oligarchy these days than a republic.

1
18

KPA,
.
It doesn’t have to mean the Republican Party moved at all, politicians change parties and positions all the time for nothing other than personal and/or political gain. The fact is he was recruited to switch parties at the request and urging of then Congressman George Miller.
.
He switched parties at a time when both parties still had liberal, moderate, and conservative members, and ran candidates that fit the district and/or state they were running in.
.
The fact that voters are choosing to become Independents, because they believe the Democratic Party and Republican Party have moved to far to the left and/or to far to the right, is exactly what moves the parties further to the left and further to the right, resulting in candidates that are more extreme, that political Independents still end up having to choose from when they vote.
.
I find it interesting that you believe that both the Democratic Party and the Republican Party have moved to the right.

12
1

“I find it interesting that you believe that both the Democratic Party and the Republican Party have moved to the right.”
That’s called willful ignorance.

But he loves to reward the political extortion of the extreme faction of the Democrat Party.

19
3

liberals have ruined our urban cities in california
Go take a drive to San Francisco & Oakland
Why people vote liberal is mind blowing.

36
4

Congressman Mark DeSaulnier is a puppet for the Left. He keeps getting elected because he doesn’t have a thought of his own and does what he is told.

22
3

Seems like the scarecrow that needs a brain.

18
3

There are 213 DEMs in the US House of Representatives.
More DEMs voted for the bill than republicans, . . . Hmm ? ? ?
.
165 DEMs voted for along with 149 republicans.
Seems for this bill, congressman was a minority in his own minority party.

22
2

WOW Claycord…Couldn’t you find a BIGGER picture of the IDIOT socialist???

21
3

So, Auntie Nancy said NO.

12
3

What are these idiots even talking about they sound so hateful and dumb.

12
6

Yea the Dems need to just shut up and go melt in a corner..

13
5

A bunch of hateful Satanists they are. You practice Satanism dems and you don’t even understand because you are not very intelligent. Just let your TV keep thinking for you and lets see where this goes. It is not too late to abandon your Satanist overlords and come back to the sane side. Jesus teaches forgiveness and so do I.

2
1

Do you think MARKY would have voted no if it he was the deciding vote? I don’t think so. I know the Dems don’t care about saddling our children and grandchildren with endless debt.

I can’t wait for him to reschedule his mental health meeting to see how much more money his plan will cost the taxpayers.

14
1

So much for well written short succinct headines. #sigh

Even Garamendi voted in favor – so is he a right-wing fascist? Eff-you Marky!!!

15
1

Just so I am clear I take it he didn’t even read it and like a child made his decision based on he doesn’t like Republicans and feels they shouldn’t have a say an anything.

15

Blah blah blah… another incumbent that doesn’t deserve the position… vote him out asap please

16
1

Notice how no one here has his back?

The voters put this thing in office you reap what you sow.Same thing with governor grease ball and stupid Joe.Hopefully things will change in the upcoming elections. But I have my doubts.

18
1

Suck an egg stupid. The only reason we would not be able to make our payments to our creditors with the trillions of tax dollars coming in every second of the day is that we are spending too much. When my paycheck will not cover a new ski boat due to responsibilities I do not buy the speedboat, I don’t try to figure out how to get more credit.
The fear politics of crying insolvency are absurd and insulting.

18
3

Probably better for the US economy to crash and burn than to live under fascism (regardless of the brand). I’ve always observed the US standard of living is about 3 times what it should be. We did well in simpler times where one could even afford a house, a new car, dining out and entertainment even on a minimum wage. What happened? We were gamed by a bunch of unscrupulous rich brats.

4
2

So, judging by all the above positive support, I’d say Mark has the exact same voter base as Joe Biden.

I’d say we’re overdue for Voter ID

13
1

That quote of his, “I refused.. .blah blah” Do your F’ing job for us, yes us, the voters, do what’s best for us, not you and your damn party BS.

13
1

What an insipid little ex-bartender!

13

you can bet that mark is all in favor of paying off student loans . Sucker me, I saved for kids college ..

my representative….be better off with a used outhouse, it is less full of it than he is.

In other words, he feels there are not enough handouts. Don’t use my taxes to give freebies to deadbeats. You’re NOT representing me.

It’s amazing how both sides use this as a political football and just try to obstruct whichever party is in power at any given time, democrats and republicans overwhelmingly voted for this – which makes DeSaulnier a political extremist. So tired of this.

This ignorant, arrogant, boot licking fool is the perfect stooge for the current inept, embarrassing, disgraceful administration. He fits right in with them.

Mark you are a simple minded puppet and a dumb ass jack ass.

In the end, the far-right Republicans got very little to nothing for their hostage-taking theatrics. For that I am grateful to Biden and his negotiators. Mark is right that this should never have happened and we shouldn’t give in to bullies. On the other hand, allowing a default may have hurt many more people than the modest take-backs will, and with far longer repercussions. That doesn’t mean that I’m against Mark’s principled vote on this: it was a hard choice to have to make and shouldn’t have had to be made in the first place.

1
20

KPA,
.
Why would you be grateful to President Biden and his negotiators? Democrats had the opportunity to pass an increase in the debt-ceiling months ago when they still controlled the House of Representatives, they chose not to do so. Democrats made this situation worse, when they could’ve passed this bill while only needing to deal with Senate Republicans.
.
Mark’s vote was an unnecessary protest vote, not a principled vote!
