“Both students involved were in the 9th grade and were acquaintances”. Does that mean they had a class together? Would be interesting to know the details. Hope the kid stabbed is OK. Children’s Hospital in Oakland is a bit further away than John Muir. Curious choice.

@Richardoh

When my daughter was 5 years old, I took her to John Muir when she woke up one day and couldn’t walk or talk. For some reason there wasn’t much JM could do so they transferred her to Children’s Hospital. In my opinion and what I experienced, the girl is better off at Children’s Hospital.

First off was it a girl that got stabbed? Second, sorry that John Muir didn’t fit the bill. I hope your daughter is fine now.

Nytemyvr, I get what you are trying to say. However, Charlie Manson never killed anyone. He was suspected of trying to kill a drug dealer, by shooting him, but he survived. Charlie got his cult followers to kill for him. Susan Atkins stabbed Sharon Tate, (Atkins died in jail several years ago) Leslie Van Houten was involved in the stabbing of the La Bianca’s, she is still in prison, as is many of the other followers of Manson, that were involved in one of more murders. The Tate and La Bianca murder’s are well known, however the cult also killed music teacher Gary Hinman, they thought he had money and wanted him to hand it over, he didn’t, they went to his apartment and chopped of his ear before killing him. Shorty Shea who was a ranchhand on the ranch that the family stayed at, was also killed by the family.

Unfortunately not surprising, but still amazing how some will jump to… not from our area… must be another color, another neighborhood, “We “ don’t do this-
This student is from Walnut Creek- this didn’t happen at YV or Mount- it happened at Northgate-
And while trying to say “ those people do thus”
If you want to profile – all school shootings have never been done by Latino or African Americans- but by white- upper socioeconomic level boys
But look at where some of you immediately went-

concerend parent April 26, 2023 - 10:36 AM - 10:36 AM

nobody said anything about race or color. stop trying to create something that isn’t there. troubled kids come in all forms and all neighborhoods. what people should be more concerned over is the fact that kids sat there and took videos of this rather than trying to jump in and help or at least go get help. What has become of people that would rather get a video for likes rather than potentially try to help save a life or stop an injury?

TDF April 26, 2023 - 10:52 AM - 10:52 AM

Teacher & Mom: you say “all school shootings have never been done by Latino or African Americans”. Just in the past year…

1) 18 year old Salvador Ramos (Latino), a former student, fatally shot nineteen students and two teachers in Uvalde, Texas. May 24, 2022.
2) 19 year old Orlando Harris (African American), a former student, fatally shot one student and one teacher in St. Louis. October 24, 2022.

@Lamorinda Larry, not true! The principal at Northgate is actually an amazing human being that cares about her students. She was my science teacher some 20 years ago at YV. This amazing woman still recognizes me after all this time when she’s run into me over the years. She’s the only high school teacher I have that does remember me and mostly because she’s went out of her way to stay in touch with all us students. She cares! She’s such a positive role model. I learned so much from her too. I feel soooo bad for Mrs. Cooper/Krauss right now. She will always one of my most beloved teachers.

Hanne Jeppesen April 26, 2023 - 12:40 PM - 12:40 PM

ExitA and Sam, Don’t know where you get the double standard from, or banning guns. I have never advocated for banning guns. I don’t like guns, I don’t own one, I think there are too many in the hands of the wrong people. However, I have always supported people’s right to have a gun for self protection and or hunting, I have nothing against people that collect guns. I grew up with farmers they all had rifles and many went hunting. Are they certain powerful guns that should not be in the hands of ordinary people I believe so, but I have never adovocated for a total ban on guns or repeal of the 2nd amendment. When I was younger I was a little more strident about the 2nd amendment, but as I learned more about the American constitution, a repeal of any of the amendments is serious and should not be taking lightly.

It has been considered normal at Mt. Diablo High for decades, but not at Northgate.

It has even been considered normal at Ygnacio Valley High 2 and a half miles up the road just over the Concord city limit line, as YVHS is the high school for most of Concord’s Monument Blvd. area.

My kids went to YVHS – never had this happen. Biggest difference is people always like to assume kids of color are the problem.

I have Jewish friends and the kids went to Foothill and Northgate. They received loads of antisemitism. Jewish friends and kids went to Oak Grove and YV had no issues.

@LamorindaLarry, seems like you’re implying it’s normal because kids in these schools are more likely to be criminals than that of other predominantly white schools. Campolindo had “normal incidents” as well as Acalanes and De la salle. But of course these incident only remain in the news for a max of 5 hours because somebody pays good money to quiet the information.

You’re absolutely right, because the implication is that they come from Pittsburg, Antioch or bad parts of Concord. It seems like a lot of people aren’t “racist” in these comments but might suggest they have kids stay in they’re designated schools. Maybe one could think they should go back to colored and white schools. Because no Caucasian children have ever committed any criminal acts in schools. Well at least none that involve knives, they just bring assault weapons.

you are the only one trying to provoke a race issue.
schools, and police seem to find it easier to simply transfer troubled students to other schools and think the problem is just going to mysteriously disappear at a new school. from reading others comments, it seems this student was transferred from another school for bringing a gun to school. stop trying to make this a race issue, when in reality its a parenting issue, or lack of. Maybe if kids had some discipline and were told no once in awhile, they wouldn’t freak out the first time they hear it.

@RICARDOH….I’ve carried a knife since 3rd grade, nothing big, just a 3″ or 4″ folding blade, Case or Buck. A couple of kids in high school used to carry a .22 rifle in a rack in the back window of their pickup. The worst of those days was walking 5 miles to school, barefooted in the snow, uphills both ways.

FYI April 26, 2023 - 2:25 PM - 2:25 PM

If this Northgate student did in fact have a prior history that some of the comments have mentioned why were they ever allowed into another school in this district? What message does this send to students?

Why does this district seem to cater to the students that are in violation of school policies over and over at the expense of the students that follow the rules? Why does the district not uphold to their handbook and policies that they have students/families sign off on each year? Remember the incident at a PH Middle School where a student made an online threat was arrested only to be transferred into another middle school in the district (and a lottery school at that btw) to the dismay of parents. It even made the local news stations.

Meanwhile there is more concern/focus about Mascot names than student safety.
