New favorite joke (I love animals, so don’t go cuckoo-bananas here):
My parrot just died. His last words were “Hey, I think my parrot’s about to die”
No worries Paranoid…I had a parrot named Polly. The darn bird ate my watch. Now Politics.
Favorite live performance (concert, play, comic, etc.) you ever attended?
My choice, probably Joe Walsh for the Gotta Any Gum tour, back in I think ’86, or Black Sabbath in ’84 (not with Ozzy, rather with Ian Gilliam).
@JEFF (THE OTHER ONE).…. Genesis in ’75, Peter Gabriel in ’83 (got to sit behind stage at the Greek), Bob Marley at the Fox Oakland in ’76, any number of Dead shows and Jerry Garcia Band shows. Frank Zappa, ’81 in Berkeley. So many, all great in their own right. I’m sure I’ll remember more that left an impression after this comment.
My all-time favorite band to see live was the Jefferson Airplane. They always gave a phenomenal performance. I might be a little biased, because when I came home from Vietnam, my wife and I met Paul Kantner. He was the Airplane’s guitarist, and he befriended us and helped me adjust to civilian life. In those days, we had the Fillmore, the Avalon Ballroom, the Carousel Ballroom, Winterland, the Longshoreman’s union hall, and The Family Dog. They were all places that held concerts, so there were plenty to choose from. Then there were the free concerts in Golden Gate Park every Sunday, so we attended a lot of concerts. We saw all the great bands of the late 60s, and early 70s, and I’ve always thought the Jefferson Airplane were the best group to see live. Other favorites were Big Brother And The Holding Company (with Janis Joplin), Quicksilver Messenger Service, Jimi Hendrix, and the Grateful Dead.
@DAWG…The Airplane were always a great show. Somehow I always missed Quicksilver, but saw Cipollina with the Dinosaurs. Sat outside Winterland and listened to Hendrix at his last show there, it sold out. Working graveyard shifts during those years seem to always conflict with going to see shows. I like to hear these comments from the old farts like me on Claycord.
NYTEMUVR… The Airplane captured the psychedelic sound of the 60s like no other band. White Rabbit, and Somebody To Love, surpassed them all.
Don’t know if I have a favorite but I’ve been to some great concerts in the day. The Day on the greens were always fun- Lynyrd Skynyrd comes to mind. Another great one was ZZ top at the Mountain Air concert in Angels Camp. Stevie Ray Vaughn at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley, The Eagles at the Shoreline, ACDC in Oakland, Molly Hatchet and the Outlaws, Ted Nugent and a lot more I probably can’t remember because they were so fun. See what I mean? How do you pick a favorite from this list.
Rolling Stones, George Thorogood and J Geils, Candlestick Park. Oct. 81.
Frank Zappa 1980. The individual musical talent in that band was phenomenal.
Thousands of screaming rock fans became silent and turned to listening. No props, no smoke bombs, no lasers, no lip-synching. And no banter apart from hello, member introductions, thank you and good night. Complex and flawlessly played music guaranteed to make a listener out of you. 19/16 time signatures will do that.
“The Producers” at Her Majesty’s Theatre, Haymarket, 2005.
The last Grateful Dead concert at Winterland, 1978, also featuring the Flying Karamazov Brothers, the New Riders of the Purple Sage, and the Blues Brothers.
@ANCIENT MARINER….I watch that show on YouTube every New Years Eve. I watched it live on TV simulcast on KSAN. The Dead were “on” that night for sure. That was quite a big thing back then to be simulcast on radio.
Didn’t know it was on YouTube – I’ll catch it next NYE. Some parts I missed – there were guys running up and down the aisles, handing out little red envelopes with Chinese script on them and saying “Gung Hay Fat Choy” every time they gave someone one of the envelopes. there was a nice joint in each envelope.
Thanks for the tip!
I’ve seen a lot of great shows, but the one that was the most fun was Sha-Na-Na in Honolulu. The worst show was Gordon Lightfoot, also in Honolulu.
Jimi Hendrix homecoming concert in Seattle 1967. My band wasn’t on the bill but we were given good seats by the promoter. Most of my other favorite concerts were the ones where our band was on the bill and we hung out with the “stars”.
Best live performance?
.
I’d say Black Sabbath with Ronnie James Dio on their Mob Rules Tour. RJD had a magical voice and his versions of classic Sabbath songs was awesome. The Outlaws opened and their Green Grass and High Tides was epic!
.
That would have been a show to see. Always wanted to see BS with Ozzy and/or RJD. Was hoping they would do another last tour, but Ozzy has had to end touring.
@EXIT 12A….Four or five of us from school had tickets to see BS in ’71 or ’72 at the SF Auditorium, 3 hours after the show was to supposed to start a guy came out and said the show was cancelled. Evidently someone “over partied” in the group, left a bad taste in my mouth and never considered going to any of their shows after that. Something like that rarely happened back then as I remember.
Bruce Springsteen in Mountain View, early nineties, Bob Seeger Oakland, Pete Seeger twice one time with Arlo Guthrie in Berkeley
5th Dimension free concert in Central Park NYC, summer of 69
Back in my native Denmark Montmartre Jazz club in Copenhagen Dexter Gordon and my fellow Dane on bass Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen, also saw him with Oscar Peterson in Oakland Yoshi’s Jazz club 2003 or 2004. Agree with Dawg love Jefferson Airplane often watch their performance from Woodstock on Utube.
@HANNE JEPPESEN….setlist.fm shows Arlo Guthrie and Pete Seeger playing in July of ’88 at the Greek. Might this have been the show you speak of?….

I was there. History in the making.
No, because I went with my exhusband and we got divorced in 1984. I believe it was between 1977 and 1979. My daughter was not born yet, and she was born in 1980. Little post note, my daughter and son in law named my grandson Arlo. When I heard they were going to name his that, I asked if it was after Arlo Guthrie. They didn’t know who he was, had heard of Woody Guthrie. However, I just visited for my grandson’s 3rd birthday, and I notice the have the old LP with Peter Seeger and Arlo Guthrie too. My son in law is really into all kinds of music, he bought a nice, what we call old fashion record player. One of my best friends (lived here in Concord on Clayton Way) had a huge music collection, he passed away almost 3 years ago, and his sister let me take all the LP’s I wanted. I sold some in garage sale, gave some to my son in law, and will give him more, I still have quite a few, but I don’t have record player and am not planning on getting one.
@Hanne Jeppesen
I also saw Bob Seger in Oakland……it was the late 70s and he was promoting his new album, “Stranger in Town”. It was terrific but I especially wanted to hear Night Moves. It turned out to be his encore song and it was awesome.
Cyn, The Bob Seeger concert I went to was in the mid to late eighties.

Springsteen first time on West Coast at Paramount in Oakland. Just a great barn burner. Somethings never leave your mind…
Not his first time, we saw Springsteen at shoreline amphitheater back in the 80s I believe. He did a 3 hour concert.
I believe that was the same concert with the Boss l went to. It wasn’t easy to get tickets, l think it was a lottery system and l got lucky.
Oops re-read the original post on what was great concert attended.
Yes we did see Springsteen in the ’80s but if I had known what an a****** he would turn out to be I never would have gone to see him.
Yes Paramount theater in Oakland saw many great concerts there can’t remember all of them but a few stood out Boz scaggs Skaggs, George Benson and many others. You couldn’t pay me to go down to that part of Oakland or in fact any part of Oakland nowadays to go see anything.
Bruce is a talented musician. Why care about someones politics if you enjoy their craft, music, movies etc.
Besides his songs are not that political Dancing in Dark, Glory Days, it is more about the every day man, struggling to keep up. Born in USA, is about how badly veterans were treated when they returned from Vietnam, I don’t see this as a liberal conservative issue. You mention Boz Scaggs I believe he is liberal,
@HANNE JEPPESEN….”You mention Boz Scaggs I believe he is liberal,”….only on the Lowdown…….

Since when can the utilities impose an “income tax”? Major lawsuits should stop this dead in its tracks, I would hope. This plan is socialism at its finest and does not encourage conservation.
..agree 100% … I wonder where they think they would get income data.. self report? That would be a joke – get it from government records? invasion of privacy and too susceptible to stolen identity, fraud, etc… another half baked idea from our so called leadership

C) There’s a Difference???
Both. I like egg pie…

@Nyte…tell that to my cholesterol level….
“A”
I like a variety; my fav…. Think Chile Relleno-ish.

But…. Like Dorothy, I do like both.
NYTE…. That leaves more for everyone else. 🙂
I just heard that the Clayton Valley Charter board authorized the removal of all non-charter school trophies and awards last year. They “needed the space” so all of the trophy cases were torn out and all contents were put in the trash, with no attempt to contact those who had a vested interest. These things were part of the school’s history, no matter who was running it, and very special to those who participated in the events or were named on different items. Efforts to have them replaced have been unsuccessful.
If this is true, shame on them. If not true, I’m OK with being corrected.
It seems they did that to the old Polytechnic High School in SF too.
Al Bundy?
1990. The great David Bowie, Shoreline. I think it was the Sound and Vision tour
Driving home yesterday, from Pacific Grove, we were treated to the most beautiful display of color one could imagine on our local hillsides. To say the hills were covered with Golden Poppies and purple lupine would be an understatement, and the grasses are still green. If you’re able, get out for a drive south on 680, to view the spectacular displays of color.
@The Old Goat
Funny you mentioned poppies, as I’ve seen more of those this spring than I ever have. A couple of neighbors have tons of them in their yards. Very pretty.
Old Goat… how far down 680 from 580 interchange? Not fond of driving on freeway in unfamiliar areas.
@itsme,
There isn’t just one spot where the poppies were in such abundance, it was all along the whole corridor of hwy 101 and 680, but I’d guess if you check out the hills around Danville, you would be well rewarded. Because of traffic, and your aversion to freeway driving, maybe go around 10am to 1pm. I haven’t yet been up on Mt.Diablo, but there should be some good displays there, too, and very little freeway driving, other than hwy 24 after the tunnel. Probably some good displays along 24.

What’s up with all these “wrong-way” drivers over the last three days?
.
Four incidents by my count.
.
The wrong way driver is scarry. Don’t know if there are more of them now, or we just hear more about it. It seems to me the last few years it has increased. Also red light runners, most days driving to work (less than a 15 minute drive) I witness 2 to 3 red lights runners. Some are just as the lights turn red, others are in the middle of the road when it turns green. Most of them on Contra Costa Blvd. Now when I get a green light I look to the left and right to see if some idiot is about to crash into me.
Exit12A, I just heard a report on KCBS about wrong way drivers, they mentioned 3. One on 580 witnes reporter it looked like he deliberately was trying to hit the other car. Another one happened on 280 in Belmont, a woman was killed and a teenager injured. If I heard the reporter right, the driver was naked!! To borrow a phrase from the Mark Thompson show (he use to be on KGO) ” I bet there was alcohol involved” drugs too a possibility. In case anyone is interested Mark does a podcast on Utube Monday through Friday 10 a.m to noon.
Nothing beats the Grateful Dead’s New Years Eve shows. The final one at Winterland on Dec 31, 1978 will never be topped
Mt. Diablo High School has a new football coach. He seems very interested in turning the program around. There are 2 days left on a fundraiser. Info is on Mt Diablo football twitter or on Facebook-Mt diablo football. Scroll about halfway down for the info. It would be great if he could build up the team. Sports can do so much to help students. Why can’t the Mt Diablo district compete with the Acalanes district? College Park did good last year and have been moved up. I hope they can compete but they are coming off a season with controversy and are starting over with a new coach. Any alumni or parents w/students at Mt D check them out. Or anyone who would just like to support.
We all know the earth started out as red hot burning sphere. How many frozen meteors had to hit the earth to fill the oceans. Doesn’t make sense does it. What else could have happened?
