The “Water Cooler” is a feature on Claycord.com where we ask you a question or provide a topic, and you talk about it.

The “Water Cooler” will be up Monday-Friday at noon.

Three out of the three professional sports teams in the City of Oakland have left or are in the process of leaving the city (Raiders, Warriors, A’s).

Both. But if it comes down to one or the other, the city of Oakland.

Listen to the media and ypu know who to blame. It’s gotta be Trump. Racism, or trans-phobia.

Team owners. They dont want to pay for a stadium for thier own team and want tax payers to pay. We all know the public funded stadiums are a waste of tax payer money. Oakland as a whole isnt much better but it all comes down to tax payer money for a private business.

Good riddance, let them leave, didnt contribute much around here anyways.

It’s the City of Oakland vs The A’s & Major League Baseball. I would lay blame the city who slow walked
the proposals through all kinds of unnecessary hurdles. 6 years worth. If they really wanted the A’s, then
Oakland would make it happen. MLB wants them out of Oakland. Fans won’t show up. It’s the City of
Losers. Hopefully, no one else gets shot in the stands until they’re gone.

Say bye bye to pro sports in Oakland.

It’s just business, big money business. For the A’s the team will be worth a lot more in Las Vegas

Not a fan, but I commend any organization or business that has the smarts to leave California.

Oakland…. and the A’s wanted out anyway (new venue, new fans, new stadium, etc.)

Gosh, DEMs running oakland didn’t get the hint the first time OR the second time.
What the heck, lets be optimistic and believe they’ll clean up their city after the third time.
.
Sorry for that moment of fantasy, of course they won’t get the message.
They’re too busy throwing tax dollars at any problem, that is when not looking at their reflection in a mirror.
.
Last republican mayor of oakland left office in 1966.

Yawn how boring OG! That must be the reason that the Warriors left for San Francisco and the Raiders and A left for Las Vegas, never mind that neither city has a republican mayor nor a majority republican city council.

But of course we all know logic is certainly not OG’s strong suit.

Sports don’t build character. They reveal it.
At the professional level, it’s all about the money. Show me the money.

Our family has season tickets to a UC sport, and it’s a fun way to spend time together a couple times a month in the Fall.
We have never paid for tickets to a professional sporting event.

Oakland is leaving to chase the money. IMHO.

You go woke you go broke. The city is past woke. Now a three time loser. Who wants to be associated with Oakland? Too bad for loyal As fans. Never was one. Oakland will never clean up.

.
Definitely Oakland and former Mayor Libby Schaaf. Oakland tried to extort the Athletics to provide housing and mandated labor (union) pay standards.
.
Smart people leave Oakland…it’s a crap hole wholly represented by the Wood Street encampment.
.
Oakland is a city of mediocrity… too concerned about possibly offending anyone and so-called equity. The only equity and justice achieved in Oakland is that many areas of the city are equally miserable.
.
Property crime, murder and shootings, side shows, homeless and feral people, feckless leadership, urban blight, and lazy city workers are indicative of its liberal failures.
.
I have long boycotted Oakland and am glad the Athletics are seeking greener pastures.

The Mamba April 20, 2023 - 2:48 PM - 2:48 PM

Both, Oakland attaching too much affordable housing to any new stadium deals and the A’s for holding the team down for so long that they now get to flee to Vegas for their precious.

Exit 12A April 20, 2023 - 6:27 PM - 6:27 PM

.
Requiring affordable housing is called, in land use legalese, an “exaction”… fundamentally it’s institutionalized extortion to get a project approved and built.

100% shouldn’t be legal.

Jeff (the other one) April 20, 2023 - 3:58 PM - 3:58 PM

Didn’t even know the As were leaving, with how little interest I have with the teams’ adoption of the whole wokeness crap. They lost me when they determined that it was very important to heavily broadcast that the lives of a certain demographic mattered more than any other demographic, or felling the need to deliberately insult the country by kneeling during what has traditionally been a respectful standing ceremony. Those dregs will not have my patronage.

Thank you for being a voice of reason.

jprcards April 20, 2023 - 5:04 PM - 5:04 PM

It is mostly the city of Oakland’s fault. Dragging their heels on any new stadium proposal and then attaching some of their “agenda” items to the proposal was bound to result in the A’s leaving just like the Raiders and Warriors did. No new, up to date facility, no team.

The fact is that that stadium is NOT up to NFL or MLB standards and it hasn’t been for many years. In fact it was an embarrassment to both leagues. Remember on the national TV games for the Raiders when we’d see the action taking place across a dirt infield during certain times of the year?!? That may have been okay in the ’70’s but the NFL has LONG moved past those days. And MLB teams no longer play in multipurpose stadiums….those days are long gone.

S April 20, 2023 - 7:25 PM - 7:25 PM

Well, let’s see here…
Warriors left OAKLAND
Raiders left OAKLAND; Twice
A’s leaving OAKLAND…
Gee… Maybe; jusy maybe, OAKLAND is the problem???

Dr. Jellyfinger April 21, 2023 - 7:45 AM - 7:45 AM

Who is to blame? …..Blame?
What kind of a question is that?
I want to know who to THANK?

The A’s will finally go to a new, clean stadium with plumbing that actually works.
After the game there is still all kinds of safe and legal entertainment & gambling action in town.
Not anything like that in Oakland, just a run down old stadium where you can’t take a whiz without sloshing thru backed up toilet water.

I might have to go to Oakland to catch a jet to Las Vegas tho.

Fed Up April 21, 2023 - 11:31 AM - 11:31 AM

It’s all Oaklands fault!, and the Real Culprit is…Former Mayor Jerry Brown. The A’s wanted to build at 20th and Telegraph on the site of the Old Capwell’s/Emporium Parking Garage however Jerry had other plans and fired Robert Bobb (the best City Manager that Oakland ever had) because he was trying to make it happen. This was in 2006, that would have revitalized all of Downtown Oakland. Short sighted dummies.

El D April 21, 2023 - 12:18 PM - 12:18 PM

Professional sports teams exist to make money for their owners. It’s not about the fans. It’s not about the history. It’s not about loyalty. It’s not about being good members of the community. It’s about money. Nevada politicians are going to spend half a billion dollars of taxpayer dollars to get the A’s stadium built in Las Vegas. Nevada politicians spent $750 million on the Raiders stadium. Oakland cannot match those numbers.

The A’s owner does not want to spend his money paying players to build a competitive team that can generate loyal fans. He won’t have to in Las Vegas. Tourists will go to A’s games to see the Red Sox or the Dodgers or the Cubs or whatever favorite team is in town.

It’s all about the money and there’s more to be made in Las Vegas. It’s not Oakland’s fault. Those are just the facts.

I blame crime. I would not even consider visiting that facility for any event.
