As part of National Crime Victims’ Rights week in April, the Contra Costa District Attorney’s Office is actively seeking Community Safety Panelists to help survivors of crime recover from the trauma they have experienced.
“Victims of crime are often the last ones to receive help in terms of counseling and other resources,” District Attorney Diana Becton noted after analyzing the state budget. “California spends around $50 billion a year on law enforcement, prisons, and county jails. However, for victim-centered services and programs, the state only spends around $100 million.”
The Neighborhood Restorative Partnership (NRP) is a community-based program that prioritizes victims. Its goal is to help victims heal and rebuild their lives after suffering from the effects of crime.
NRP was initiated by the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office as a program that moves beyond a one-size-fits-all approach to crime.
NRP addresses low-level misdemeanors, such as vandalism, alcohol control violations, and other quality of life crimes by partnering with members of the community as Safety Panelists. Panelists are chosen through an application and screening process. They receive training at the DA’s Office and are then empowered with the authority – pursuant to PC 14150-14156 — to mediate certain types of misdemeanor offenses.
Safety Panelist Susan Hildreth said the NRP program “is a great opportunity for community members to work together in a safe, open and confidential setting, to achieve positive outcomes for victims, participants, and the community.”
Contra Costa residents interested in becoming a Community Safety Panelist can apply here.
Putting more criminals in jail for longer sentences will reduce crime a little.
Letting criminals walk free from crimes committed with little more punishment encourages more crime.
Let’s emphasize getting and keeping criminals off the street.
don’t we have judges for this?
more silly left wing nonsense
Keep building low income apartment complexes in downtown area. Job security for this safety panelist thing.
Restorative Justice- a left wing hot word engineered to let more criminals stay away from serving
a prison sentence. Newsom is pushing the concept and hopefully, he will pull Kamala Harris(1%)
type numbers in the Dem primary.
Scary concept.
.
Encourage citizens and the victims to join the NRA and to purchase a firearm for self protection.
.
DO NOT LET YOURSELF BECOME A VICTIM.
.
FIGHT CRIME. SHOOT BACK.
.
Concord, the happiest place on earth. What a crock!
Well, I think a lot of victims would certainly feel better if the bd folks were punished. Seems pretty simple/ All we have to do is follow the laws…
They have to be kidding. Who do you think they will pick for the board. Then they can say don’t blame us the board did it.
Have they disclosed what ethnicity they are looking for???
.
Anything with “restorative” in the title is racist, discriminatory, and seeks to circumvent established laws and punishments.
.
Step one should be getting rid of Becton and getting a real DA.
Makes sense to handle public drunkenness, narcotics possession / abuse, and minor-in-possession of alcohol offenses outside the criminal justice system.
Doing so preserves judicial resources for predators who prey on the community vis-a-vis habitual vagrancy, theft, exploitation or violence.
