Starbucks is seeking approval from the City of Concord to construct a second walk-up Starbucks coffee location inside the Safeway on Clayton Rd. at Denkinger Rd.
According to a city staff report, the reason Starbucks wants to build a second Starbucks inside Safeway is because the dining room at the nearby Starbucks at Clayton Rd. and Treat Blvd. has been shut down due to the traffic problems it created on the surrounding streets. The drive-thru at that location is currently open. Starbucks estimates the closure of the dining room has caused them to lose between $20,000-30,000 a day, and they’re hoping to create a second walk-up location nearby to make up for the loss.
A public hearing to discuss the proposal will be held on Tuesday April 18 on Zoom.
RELATED STORY: Starbucks At Clayton And Treat In Concord Closes Dining Room Until Further Notice – Drive-Thru Remains Open
I’m guessing the Starbucks at the Clayton station is too far away ? Or the Starbucks inside the Safeway in Clayton station is too inconvenient? Like really? Why does concord keep approving these Starbucks opening. Not to mention the Starbucks on monument Blvd. this is getting way out of control…we need another Peet’s Coffee if you ask me.
Peet’s is no better than toilet water. My wife ran the Clayton store for 10 years they are hot garbage, I would rather have another new vendor come in, besides they aren’t doing that well financially and won’t be opening up any new locations for a bit. They are owned by the same German holding company that owns Jamba, that is their cash cow. Ever since Peet’s started trying to be Starbuck’s Jr, their quality went below Starbuck’s. They can’t keep employees to save their life…
Fads like Star Yucks and Vicki’s Secrets WILL NEVER GET MY MONEY!!!
As I recall, that was one of the significant complaints mentioned before opening the Clayton and Treat shop.
With Duncan opening down the street, a competent competitor is nearby that will have little or no traffic concerns. I won’t comment on the product quality between the two.
The parking at Safeway on Dekinger is already horrible. That will be another mistake if the city approves its opening.
Which they will.
Parking at the Denkinger Safeway is already terrible. The new Starbucks on Monument will have plenty of parking until the shoplifters run them out like Orchard Hardware, Safeway and Rite Aid.
Yes there was alot of concern over that Clayton Road Starbucks backing up traffic on Denkinger and Clayton Road before it ever opened. But it was approved and they went forward with it anyway. So tough if they’re losing $20,000 a day without having a dining room. The rest of us knew it was going to be a problem.
Starbucks Corp saw a business opportunity and took it.
I can’t find any city meeting scheduled for 4/18. Please let us know what the correct date is and whether it is Planning, DRB, or city council. Would like to zoom in.
Starbucks never got permission from the city to shut down its indoor dining or make changes to their entry/exit. This new plan sounds absurd given the difficult parking for Safeway.
Thank you.
.
Public hearing notifications are posted a minimum of 10 days prior to the hearing (per State law).
.
You can call the Concord planning department and talk to the project planner to be placed on the mailing list.
.
Or surf Concord’s website on or around April 8 and it should be noticed there.
.
I have been in touch with planning going back to last October on this issue, and last I heard Starbucks had made no formal requests for permit approval to close their indoor operations or reconfigure their traffic pattern.
Oh, let me add that Starbucks doesnt need permission from the City to scale back its operation.
.
But Starbucks does need City approval to change its vehicular entry/exit patterns.
.
So a business that was approved as an indoor restaurant with a drive-through window can simply go to drive-through only without approval? Just because that was allowed during the pandemic does not mean it is an acceptable practice now. A drive-through only Starbucks would never have been approved at that location.
The restaurant could function under its original permit. All it needs to do is add a $2 surcharge per drink at the drive through during peak commute times (surge pricing) to reduce drive through traffic. No need to close the indoor restaurant.
Losing $20K-$30K a day? Should have seen this coming. Nice move Starbucks!!!
$20,000 – $30,000 a day? That’s a lot of coffee.
Not with their prices!
Before the Starbucks at Treat and Clayton even opened, there were concerns about potential traffic issues— even right here on this website. So now, the dining room has to close due to traffic concerns? Who would ever have guessed?
The Safeway on Denkinger is already on the small side. It doesn’t seem like a second Starbucks in there would work very well.
.
Was a traffic & parking inpact study conducted for the Treat/Clayton location? How did it go so awry?
.
I’ll tell you why…. bad assumptions equals bad conclusions!
.
As the saying goes, “Garbage in, garbage out.”
.
Concord should consider approving Starbucks permit with conditions that are triggered by thresholds like overflowing drive-thru queues, insufficient parking turnover based on time of day and occupancy, and business hours.
.
Bad assumptions equal and bad conclusions are, for the most part, the result of corruption in the City Government.
The City Council is supposed to manage the city for the people of the city. They are our representatives managing the city for the rest of us.
They are and have been, a pathetic bunch of climbers working for their largest donors while ignoring everyone else. They are money driven, a group of good ol’ boys, and absolutely corrupt.
They also get re-elected after driving drunk on the wrong side of the road.
Was that Hoffbrau?
I do not see how that makes business sense for either Starbucks or Safeway.
By the way, has there been any word about the proposal to renovate the dilapidated Bel-Air strip-malI? I noticed that the nail and hair salons have both moved, leaving the entire center of that place vacant. Part of the proposal that was floated many months ago was to put a drive-thru fast food joint where the smog center is currently located — that is another bad idea that the city should nix if it ever resurfaces again.
Lot where new starbucks was built was too small to begin with and a number of people stated that when plans were posted here on Claycord. Good sized trees at back of lot were chopped down. Was perfect size for Christmas tree lot that was there every year.
.
Too bad concord didn’t realize the problems, then again isn’t all about the sales tax revenue ? ? ?
It’s only for tax money and being politically woke. That is why Chik Fil A was denied so may times. But the people have spoken. And probably enough hands have been greased.
The traffic still backs up in the morning, even with dining room closed. We all knew what an awful location this would be when they built there. They should move across the street to the area next to CVS. That place has tons of empty space, free parking & would be way less of a traffic issue.
Fast Food Nation. We are more and more becoming a nation of junk food consumers.
starbucks customers, write down how much you spend each time over course of one week.
Multiply by four
Take that total and multiply by twelve.

Now think about how much you are saving for retirement
.
Your decision, you could have a very comfortable retirement in your golden years.
.
OR you might find yourself still working at 73 under a couple golden arches asking ya wanna large fries, your actions now govern how comfortable your retirement will be.
Think about it . . . .
In this day and age, lots of gov’t handouts. Or … work hard, save and invest then get taxed to death supporting many goof offs.
A woman in the small community where I grew had a sister who was a retired drama professor that played a senior in those first MacDonald’s commercials back in the 1980s about them hiring seniors.
.
Don’t forget that many did save for retirement only to have the gangster banksters ruin it for them earlier in this century.
They’re 20,000 and 30,000 sounds like a made up number to make it sound bad. At the bottom and that would be over $7 million a year. Highly unlikely they were doing that much on the inside.
I agree. That figure does sound made up. If you run the numbers, $30,000 divided by the number of hours that store is open (about 15), gives you $2,000 per hour. I don’t know how much things cost in Starbucks, but for the sake of easy calculation say people spend $10 each, that’s 200 people AN HOUR. Even if they are spending $20, that’s still 100 people, or nearly 2 people per minute. (The poor employees trying to keep up with that pace!) In any event, I doubt that small space is accommodating that many people per hour, all day long.
I don’t like coffee. And I would argue that no one likes coffee, unless you drink it black. If you have to add milk and sugar to something you don’t like it. You don’t see me adding limes to my beer..
If you actually go inside a Starbucks or Pete’s it looks like a zoo. Weirdest collection of people you’ll see in one place. Coffee shop regulars are weirdos.
C mon how stupid of the city to put Starbucks in this location anyone would see the traffic issues!
…and they want to open a chik fila on Diamond. More traffic problems!
I said that when they proposed the Treat location. It’s too congested right there. Opening or having access to Starbucks inside that Safeway isn’t any better. That parking lot a chore to navigate during busy times. It would have been better if Starbucks were located deep inside the center that has Staples or across the street in the center that has Togo’s
By the way, the upcoming Dutch Bros is going to be awful too. There’s NOT enough room for drive thru and parking. It’s going to create congestion next to Taco Bell. Why they split that lot in half to also have children is beyond me.
A second Starbucks inside one store? Surely you jest or it’s an April Fools joke.🤣
So, it’s obvious that the Concord planning department, and possibly the county planning department as well, is staffed by boneheads that have never lived, or driven, through the Clayton-Treat intersection. We told them, before that Starbucks was approved, that it was a very, very bad location for such an enterprise! If they really want to compound a bad situation they should rehab the old JoAnn’s into a sit down Starbucks! Yep! That’s the answer!!
Whoops! Beverly’s!! Not JoAnn’s!
Any time a Starbucks loses money that is a good thing. They put out a few small drive up coffee shops in Concord out of business that I know of. One on Clayton Road, one on Treat Blvd and one on Monument Blvd. Why do they feel the need to elimanate the small businesses is beyond me.
