Motorists who travel in eastern Contra Costa County during overnight hours will need to be prepared for the closure of state Highway 4 in Brentwood due to the construction of an overcrossing for bicycles and pedestrians.
In partnership with Brentwood, the Contra Costa Transportation Authority is constructing the Mokelumne Trail Bicycle and Pedestrian Overcrossing to provide safe access to bicyclists and pedestrians for commuting and recreational travel, reconnecting two sides of the trail that were separated by the expansion of the freeway. The overnight closures are to facilitate construction work that will install the pedestrian and bicyclist crossing over the freeway, marking a major milestone in the project.
These closures will impact Highway 4 in both directions. Overnight closure of the freeway is planned during evening hours in order to minimize impacts to motorists.
Nightly closure of the freeway, between Lone Tree Way and Sand Creek Road, is necessary to ensure crew and public safety during the construction work.
The temporary overnight freeway closure will occur between Friday and next Thursday, April 6, on the following schedule (weather permitting):
March 31: Eastbound Highway 4 will be closed from midnight until 6 a.m. April 1;
April 1: Westbound Highway 4 will be closed from 11 p.m. until 7 a.m. April 2;
April 2: Westbound Highway 4 will be closed from 11 p.m. until 4 a.m. April 3;
April 3: Eastbound Highway 4 will be closed from 11 p.m. until 4 a.m. April 4;
April 4: If any work remains to be completed, the freeway may be closed in either the eastbound or westbound direction from 11 p.m. until 4 a.m. April 5.
April 5: If any work remains to be completed, the freeway may be closed in either direction from 11 p.m. until 4 a.m. April 6.
this will be great to finally connect the trail systems back together!
