City Of Concord Aware Of Traffic Impacts Due To Construction On Cowell, Galindo And Monument

Construction continues on the Monument Blvd. Class 1 Path project at Monument Blvd. and Galindo St. at Cowell Rd.

City staff says they are aware of the traffic impacts caused by a temporary right turn lane closure from Cowell onto Monument.

The City asks that you please be aware that these impacts are only temporary as the dedicated right turn lane onto Monument will be restored once construction activities are completed by the end of June.

In the meantime, the City is working to provide signage for a detour onto Mesa Street for right turn traffic. Additionally, signal timing adjustments at the intersection are planned for when the project is nearing completion, which will help alleviate the traffic impacts.

The City adds, “we appreciate your patience during this construction, as well as your understanding and support for the City’s goal to enhance pedestrian and bicyclist safety along Monument Blvd. and Galindo St.”

REPAVE CONCORD AVENUE.

It is horrendous.

The planning commission and the city council have made horrible decisions in regard to the roadways recently. The decision to add green bike lanes, which either eliminates car lanes or makes them narrow is ridiculous. I have yet to see a bike in any of these green lanes. The monies spent on new walking paths by the skate park is a total waste. There is a side walk on the other side of the street that pedestrians can use. Also, there is already graffiti on the new cement wall in that location. Monies should have been spent on repaving the city streets and fixing the issues at hand. Concord and California (for that matter) will never become a mostly transit city (like most European countries) – Americans like to drive and need their cars – it is not feasible or practicable to ride one’s bike to work, grocery shopping etc. Plus, the city continues to approve high dentistry housing I just wish these politicians would start using some common sense.

I have read that the addition/inclusion of these “bike” lanes has nothing to do with promoting bicycle use but rather to impede auto driving altogether. These planners know the lanes will not be used by cyclists, other than a one or two off, but, they think if they can make driving more cumbersome, less people will drive those roads. Not tremendously logical, but perfectly in line with a central planner’s mindset. I wonder if we did one of those propositions to eliminate these lanes, if they would (I know these props only seem to go in one direction). Regardless, all these reductions in vehicular capacity on our means of travel are quite aggravating.

Slowing traffic and creating congestion is not good for emergency response services police, fire and ent. They should be trying to create better traffic flow.

I have to drive in the bike lane in front of Bart everyday just to avoid the potholes. More like potcraters.

The addition of underused and unused bike lanes installed all over Concord over the last decade are largely due to California’s “Complete Streets” law which requires cities to make roadways available to other modes of transportation and travel other than for just personal vehicle travel when repaving a roadway, such as pedestrian walkways, and/or bike lanes, and/or carpool lanes, and/or bus lanes, and/or light rail, and/or mass transit rail, and/or passenger rail. These bike lanes have obviously been a waste of space and money, and have been a complete failure in Concord. We are lucky this is only a state law and that the attempt to make this a federal law during the Obama-Biden failed.

The new “path” adjacent to the skate park has reduced the width of the two traffic lanes significantly. Unless the geniuses plan to remove the newly installed curb to rewiden the road, prepare for a spate of sideswipe accidents. And when will they finish stripping Grant Street? The lane markers are crazy bad, especially near 2700 Grant. Maybe they’d be finished if the contractor’s crew didn’t toast a vehicle. Last but not least, will the traffic lights EVER get times properly? Nobody turning left yet the green arrow is triggered or it stays for far too long after a car turns. To see the problems all you have to do is drive around town. Do the Supes even live in Concord?. Bad choices, folks!

I agree. City management should get a pay cut, not a raise.

Excellent point. It also appears the new streetlights will be dangerously close to the #2 lane. Go over the curb just a wee bit and smack!
