The Water Cooler – Who Do You Tip?

by CLAYCORD.com

The “Water Cooler” is a feature on Claycord.com where we ask you a question or provide a topic, and you talk about it.

The “Water Cooler” will be up Monday-Friday at noon.

This question was posted a few years ago, but it’s a good one that changes with time, so let’s talk about it again.

We give tips to waiters/waitresses and the pizza delivery person, but who else should we tip….The guy who washes your car? The mailperson? The maid who cleans your hotel room?

The list can get long, so tell us who you think deserves a tip, and who you think shouldn’t get any extra money.

Talk about it….

.
1. Food servers on when they take my order at the table. Counter service workers don’t get a tip unless they provide extraordinary service.
.
2. Motel/hotel housekeeping.
.
3. Valet service.

Waiters and Witresses those who make minimum wage and work for the tips. Cannot stand picking up food and they turn a screen in your face asking 15%, 20%, 25% tip? Ridiculous

Wait staff preparing / delivering my food … somebody that sells me the winning lottery ticket will get a big tip! 🙂

Not very many people. Only for extra good service.

A simple tip, particularly if unexpected, can really make someone’s day, and I like to do that.

Generally, I tip those providing food service, even if it is just a take out order, and if I travel, hotel staff. If a service repairman does some work at my house, I like to slip them a 20, even if the job was pretty straight forward. I really don’t do much else (pretty boring) where I could tip, so a pretty limited range there.

Just tipped a doordash driver for coming out in this crazy cold and windy weather. He had a smile and thank you and “Have a good night.” Good people+Good service=good tips.

I have discovered that I really like having groceries and meals delivered to my house. Before the lockdown, I tipped based on the service received, but more and more, I’m tipping to encourage the person to come back to work tomorrow.
