It’s been 3 years since Kmart on Clayton Rd. in Concord closed its doors, and the 90,000-square-foot building has been empty ever since (except for the yearly temporary occupation by Spirit Halloween).
Target is actually still interested in the property, but they’ve been unable to come to an agreement since Lucky has a grocery restriction on the property, and won’t release it. Target would only be able to move in if Lucky agrees to let them, or if Target agrees to not sell groceries.
Property management company MerloneGeier Partners confirmed to Claycord.com one of the plans they’ve considered is to subdivide the building and lease to four different tenants. Spaces would range from 18,890 – 29,170-square-feet. Harbor Freight Tools has shown interest if that plans moves forward.
As a square-footage comparison, Ross in the nearby Clayton Valley Shopping Center is 30,000-square-feet, and Target in Pleasant Hill is 115,000-square-feet.

Would you rather spend an hour ripping around a racetrack in a go cart or an hour walking the aisles of a crowded Target store shopping and then supporting the Peoples Republic of China?

Target, as a whole, has been incredibly disappointing at both locations nearby. Empty shelves nearly all the time, not matter the time of year. You can’t get basics sometimes. I wouldn’t want a Target in that spot. Indoor mini golf or roller rink seems like a great idea. Or something in that same vain. An activities place for kids and/for families.
You are so right about target! Another thing I noticed is a lot of items are stocked under the wrong price label. Numerous times I’ve purchased something that seems like a good value only to find out it was much more expensive.

I don’t think it’s a joke at all. Claycord is in need of a fine dining establishment to serve the people authentic Italian food, for which Olive Garden can provide. What more could you ask for?
Target! We have to drive for everything because we don’t have any department stores. They’ve been closing Luckys in many areas and frankly a target would bring more foot traffic to the area and Luckys would probably benefit. A store that size won’t be selling a lot of groceries anyway.

Would love a Target to move into the old Kmart. In Sand City (near Monterey), Target and Lucky coexists in the same shopping center with Costco across the street. I would shop at Lucky more often if I was doing a Target (with groceries) run. Even when I go to WC Target and get a few items, I still need to stop at the supermarket for additional items. It could be a win-win situation if Lucky would release the restriction.

Just bring the original Kmart back. There was nothing wrong with that store. Every Christmas I wish Kmart was around. They always had the basics covered at a reasonable price.

The one in S Lake Tahoe finally closed last July. It was a sad day as now there’s no “general purpose” store in SLT. They now have drive over to Carson City for almost every4h except food & lumber
Toys R us is getting stores back. There is still a Kmart and a Sears, they still exist. You say it’s a dead franchise but it’s not. They sold out their real estate, and consolidated they didn’t go out of business.

Really wish Lucky would reconsider. I don’t but many groceries from Target-but I would go to Luckys more for groceries if it was next to a target & I could get all my shopping done in one place. I think bringing a lot more foot traffic to that center would only be good gig Lucky.
That being said: would be awesome if it was a family fun center: indoor mini golf, games, roller skating. It would only work if they had effective security to keep it safe and free of troublemakers. We could use more kid/family activities in our area.
I’d like either Target or another more upscale (clothing and moderate priced furniture) store to move in there. Maybe ACE Hardware could make a comeback there.

Multiple use gaming facility. A more family friendly Dave and busters. You could have video games, roller blading/Skating, paint-ball, young child exploration area..all this surrounding an elevated dinning area that is round with full views of all areas within the building.
Unfortunately I think that kind of business would likely bring troublemakers in from all over the surrounding areas. What starts out as a family friendly place seems to go south quickly. I heard that there is a new pee wee golf place in downtown Martinez.

The question is what would people like to see in the old KMart building, and Target is a valid answer, albeit an unrealistic one. Lucky may or may not be wise in blocking a store that sells food, but they are contractually within their rights to do so, and the city does not have the authority to overrule Lucky’s decision.
I miss my Kmart. Oh, my blender broke. I need a slow cooker. Oh man, my microwave blew up and I dont feel like leaving the neighborhood. Yah, next choice would be Target for me. Ross does amazing. Love it. Great grocery stores. Now, let me have a Target please.

Lowe’s!!! There is already a garden center area in the building and the other Concord Lowe’s is not convenient and is kind of far away for people who live on this side of town…it’s nice to have another alternative to Home Depot and Outdoor Supply Hardware is okay but they also seem to have less inventory.

The owner of that building sure likes to waste electricity. The lights were on 24/7 for almost the entire three years it has been vacant. I can see you leaving a few of them on for security reasons, but all of them?
For groceries, I shop at Lucky’s. For everything else, I shop at Target.

I agree indoor karting is fun and would be a good addition. Another good use of it would be something like the Public Market in Emeryville. A common food area with casual eateries and open late, until like 10pm.
I’d love to see a Target there, but I don’t see Lucky’s ever dropping their opposition. I’d settle for a Walmart, but it will run into the same issue as Target. It would be nice to turn it into some type of sports/training facility for kids.
My prediction: It will be subdivided and leased to a dollar store, a pawn shop, a charity thrift shop, and a cheap clothing store.

There isn’t enough demand for a big store like that in such a remote location. The shopping center should probably be redeveloped into homes.
The last thing they need there is a Target store. The traffic congestion would be horrific. I would rather see a Sportsmans Warehouse or indoor shooting range or maybe subdivided so we can get a Harbor Freight and a Work Clothing store that sells clothes for FR usage.
If Target agrees they wouldn’t be able to sell groceries, but that likely won’t happen since they are there to make money. Either subdivide into more shopping, dinning. Would need to update/gentrification the area.

Split the property into separate parcels. Luckys can be on one end the rest can go to the second parcel. Just an idea
It’s not a workable idea. The new parcel would still be bound by the terms of the existing contract.

Neither the store nor the parking lot has room for a Costco, but I think Trader Joes would be a good fit.

It really is too bad that a Target can’t open there. Wish they could just put in a smaller store without the groceries, we don’t need that. But what was nice to have in the area was a one-stop shop where you could pick up bath towels, a coffee maker, holiday decorations per season, or a quick gift without having to drive down the hill to Walnut Creek or Concord. Some people were kind of snooty about K-mart, but I really liked having that store around the corner for all the reasons above. I was bombed when Stein-Mart closed on Ignacio, because while you couldn’t get a coffee maker or small appliances there, it was a nice place for home accessories, clothing, shoes. I got a lot of nice things there.

My comment is coming from a Pittsburg resident who drives to either Brentwood Sprouts or Raleys in Antioch. I occasionally go to Trader Joe’s stores in Concord in conjunction with a trip to Safeway at Treat and Clayton. I think a Sprouts would be ideal. Both their stores are pretty far even for Concord residents and the one on North Main and Treat has an abysmal parking situation. Trader Joe’s has two already, both reasonably close. I think a lot of people switched buying their household supplies to online and haven’t switched back. I haven’t been to Target except once since the pandemic lockdowns started even though things are back to normal. There’s just not much I buy there that isn’t cheaper from Amazon. Don’t most people buy groceries weekly with perhaps an occasional trip for the inevitable item left off the list? It’s sad that Lucky won’t agree to a food seller in that lot because a Sprouts or Whole Foods would likely save a lot of driving time and gas. I don’t mind the extra time to go to Target because it’s a place I don’t need to go weekly. But that said, I’d shop there if it were there.
Sprouts has gone so downhill. Prices so high. They wanted $12 for a single salad.. cheeses are high. Trader joes and g.o have that covered. Very inconsistent. Except for the poor service.
Temporary FAMILY shelter until the owner decides what to do with the property. We have Martinez, Concord, Pleasant Hill, & Walnut Creek families (our own communities families) being told ALL the family shelters are full and if there is an opening, they are being sent to Richmond. This is not OK. it’s bad enough being displaced but to have to go so far outside your own community is a shame. These are children we are talking about. Parents are having to sleep in cars while their children couch surf from friend to friend IF that is even a possibility. As I stated in my first two words…TEMPORARY & FAMILY. Having representatives from the necessary agencies (that assist with housing, employment, and counseling) onsite also would be ideal. This is my unapologetic opinion
