Book reports: 1 – A Canticle for Leibowitz, Walter M. Miller, Jr., 1959. This one the Hugo award in 1961. Yes, it is that good but also depressing. A Canticle is either a son or chant. In this case maybe more of dirge for mankind. It is set up in 3 sections, each one about 2 or 3 thousand years apart. Apparently even after a first nuclear war it propose at least two more. It does give a very tiny bit of something that might be called hope at the end.

2 – The Number of the Beast, Robert A. Heinlein, 1980. Couldn’t be the more opposite of Canticle if it tried. This one is a confusing run through fiction and science fiction with bits of history tossed in. It starts with four people and ends with thousands. A modified future flying “roadster” that can jump through universes at first then through time. Basic theme is nothing is real but everything is. There are hat tips to many Sci Fi and fantasy authors, sprinkled like bread crumbs though the story. Lots of sex too but only sometimes gets almost, but not quite, close to explicit. This is Heinlein romping through the art of storytelling.

Good reports again, Dorothy. (And congrats on being first this week.)

Just one? The only one I would not select is “E”

I agree with Jeff

yeah, just one
this week is even a difficult pick for me.
🙂

When you see the repeated damage to fences along Clayton Road as you enter Clayton City Limits, you have to conclude that the Speed Limit is set way too high for the road conditions.

D) Large scallops sautéed in white wine and butter, with garlic.

White wine, butter, and garlic, with or without the scallops. You can’t go too far wrong.

D) Scallops, but then again, I have them in years.

Dawg, … Lots of Butter!! 🙂

C). Oysters. A good Hangtown Fry will getcha goin’ on a windy, rainy morning before the Niners play at 1:30!

“D”

I tend to use “A” more often, but a fav recipe is “D”, so I gotta Pick “D”

A & D. Use to go clam digging on the southern Washinton coast as kid

( A ) should be abalone, which would be the clear winner. Choice of slections, (d) bacon wrapped scallops. Because well… bacon 😁

Can’t pick one, love both scallops and mussel. l rarely cook scallops, but like to order them when I eat out. Mussels l like in a wine sauce or smoked canned. When my Dad was growing up and young mussels were considering poor man’s food, however in the sixties there were very expensive in Denmark. Years ago when l was in Vancouver with my girlfriend we had lunch at a nice outside Cafe and ordered, mussels, they were served in wine butter sauce, they were delicious. When l got home to Benicia l decided to make some for myself and bought them at Raley’s, cooked them and enjoyed them very much, until one day l looked at the packages and it said “live”, after that l could no longer cook them. So now they have to be frozen (Sprout’s have good ones) in a can or l order them on a restaurant. Don’t ask for a reasonable explanation l don’t have one.

B) I love everything in a good Cioppino, especially mussels.

Lost guitarist Jeff Beck this week. Was going to state my favorite song of his, but realized I myself cannot pick one. Can’t even pick just 3, too many are my faves. But, will ask this crowd, if a Beck fan, which is/are your favorites.

I will name one of his songs, so appropriate for now, “The Final Peace” from There & Back.

Heart Full of Soul – Yardbirds. Beck’s solo is one for the ages.

Love his playing on Rod Stewart’s cover of “People Get Ready”, and the solo from Rod Stewart’s “Infatuation” is great as well.

Freeway Jam

@GEBERTX….That was often on the pre-ride playlist while preparing to go out on a “spirited” weekend putt “back in the day”.

I watched a great documentary about “The Ventures” last week on FreeVee. Having taken part in the history myself of Northwest Rock’n Roll it was a fun watch.

My band opened for the Yardbirds in the summer of ’67. Jeff Beck had just left the group and they had a new guy, Jimmy somethin’.

Truly an amazing musician. My favorite has to be “Cause We’ve Ended As Lovers.” Could not be more spot on the emotional wrench.

That was supposed to be a “Reply” to JEFF (THE OTHER ONE) requesting a favorite Beck song, but it looks like it got the “Hanne Treatment.” Not that there was anything personal intended. All Beck’s work was amazing. And, interesting that Beck was kidded about serving as a model for Spinal Tap’s Nigel Tufnel.

Big Block.
I listen to live at Ronnie Scott’s frequently. Vinnie Colaiuta is an absolute monster drummer and he and Jeff change time signatures together seamlessly. The rockabilly session really illustrates his early influence and it’s clear he is loving playing those old tunes.
Plus he owns several ‘32 Fords. I always appreciated he found humor when people kept asking him if he was the model for Nigel Tufnel in Spinal Tap. So cool he didn’t take himself too seriously. I would love to hear other Jeff Beck stories.

Things I do not need to see in the news anymore…

Influencers

@JEFF (THE OTHER ONE)……Hard to name one, Beck’s Bolero, JB Group is up there….One of my favorite albums was “Beck, Bogert and Appice”. I liked it so much I bought a “Master” Import pressing, big bucks back then.

@ Bella ~
On a post earlier this week, you mentioned your Husband passed away.
Was his passing recently or just paying the Capital Gains taxes now?
In any case, hoping things are going O.K. for you.

I’ve noticed over the last 20 years that claycord does not promote African American businesses in concord They don’t even mention them unless something bad happens????????? Can anyone help me with this topic I’m confused I’ve noticed several African American business yet the city give the no attention on any of there sites. Things that make you say hmmmmm????????

Another freeloader heard from, commercial promotions cost money. I noticed YOU didn’t mention any business. You could have given them a shout out but failed to do so.
Are you still confused?

22
3

How would you know if a business owned by an African American has not been mentioned? Whenever I read a story about a local business on Claycord, there is never any indication of the owner’s skin color.

18

Because that’s what the race-baiters do.

16

You are 100% correct.

What you are is irrelevant. Just ask Ketanji Brown Jackson.
It’s what you identify as that’s important. Everyone knows that. How silly………

Claycord hasn’t posted any stories promoting businesses for being white.

Thank you for that site. It reminded me of a mystery and I just identified it directly with some google searches. I while ago I got an inheritance of a lot of stuff, and part of it was a bunch of maybe 6 to 8 inch wires wrapped in very pliable leather and well sewn, looking a bit like green beans. Couldn’t figure it out. Just found it on ebay described as Victorian/Edwardian hair curlers. Only worth a few dollars, but now mystery solved.

Don’t know what’s wrong with this decade, first a toilet paper shortage and now eggs.
Heck when we were kids those things were in such good supply and so inexpensive we’d decorate houses with ’em.

Infrastructure across the world, another interesting URL
https://www.reddit.com/r/InfrastructurePorn/new/

Just another day in antioch, Sycamore and L streets mini mall shut down Police vehicles, crime tape, numbered markers on black top and civilian vehicle with doors open.
.
But it’s Sycamore and antioch, so same ole, same ole . . . . . .

Typical, . . . . was another murder, first of the year.
Remains to see if antioch will exceed last year’s NINE murders.
Evidently third shooting incident this year.
In past 10 years (2013-2022) 97 murders.

That’s not a shooting, it’s equity.

Mid-Week Pick One:
.
A) Comforter
B) Quilt

A) Comforter……especially right now.

“B”
.
🙂

A & B …. and my fleece lined winter socks… a hot buttered rum… OK, comfy now.

Friggin cold out here (windy too).

Well…. a new “whatever Column” is on the way… maybe another hour or so.
