A 2-year-old boy died on Wednesday evening in Occidental when a tree fell on his home and killed him, a Sonoma County sheriff’s spokesperson said.
The toddler was sitting on a couch around 5 p.m. when a tree toppled over and impacted the mobile home in the 2800 block of Joy Road, a heavily wooded area studded with redwoods.
Sheriff’s Sgt. Juan Valencia said that “trees were falling left and right” due to the storm and “basically crushed the residence.”
The distraught father and a neighbor managed to remove the boy from the wreckage, Valencia said.
The Occidental Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched at 5:14 p.m. to render aid, but unfortunately the baby could not be revived.
A chaplain was called in to comfort the family.
A medical examiner will perform an autopsy, but the Sheriff’s Office said the death was consistent with the circumstances.
my god, that’s terrible. rest in peace baby boy and prayers for the family.
