The Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff and the Contra Costa DA’s Office are currently investigating an in-custody death that occurred at the Martinez Detention Facility.
The inmate, who is not being identified at this time, was arrested on December 31, 2022, by Antioch police for misdemeanor spousal battery. Upon entering Intake, he tested positive for Covid and was assigned to a module on quarantine status and housed alone. He was screened by County Health Services and cleared for incarceration by Medical and Mental Health staff.
On Tuesday at approximately 1:22pm, deputies conducted a room check and observed no movement from the inmate. Deputies made entry and called for jail medical staff to respond. Life-saving measures were attempted by deputies, medical staff and paramedics. He was later pronounced deceased at the scene. There were no immediate signs of trauma or anything suspicious.
The countywide law enforcement involved fatal incident protocol was invoked and the investigation is ongoing.

The jabs cause that
Naw knowing the contra costa county sheriffs he was more than likely screaming for help but ignored.
Wow, Harsh….. Have you ever done their job?
Suicide
That sucks. At what point is the jail staff liable for determining he was medically ok? I feel like someone has some responsibility to ensure safety while incarcerated (because you can’t do it yourself). I know these are criminals but not all inmates are psycho murderers.
There are plenty of un-convicted Americans that are held in jail. There’s always nuance until evidence is shown at trial.
Investigating yourself, your friends, or your own agency is never the best way to find the truth
Would not be surprised if some one were to ask Gran Jury to investigate.
Another victim of COVID, so tragic.
An inmate in an isolation cell for medical reasons is not only checked by Deputies but is also checked by medical staff as well. The medical unit at the jail has nursing staff, unlike regular units where a nurse may come once or twice a day to administer prescriptions.
If it weren’t for a domestic charge odds are he wouldn’t have been in jail to begin with.
