Up next in our installment of the Claycord Donut Wars is Donut King, located at 1607 Contra Costa Blvd. in Pleasant Hill.
Donut King has been in business for several decades, and they’re very popular in Pleasant Hill.
Here’s our recap.
Donut King has its up and downs. It was very crowded, which is good, but they had a very slim selection of donuts by 10 a.m., which is bad. They also only take cash, which is another negative. They were friendly, but we felt very rushed to order, and the price breakdown was confusing.
They advertise on their menu board that you can get six donuts for $9.50 and a dozen for $17, but that only includes cakes, glazed and old fashioned. If you want anything else, it’ll cost more. The box of 10 donuts you see above was $19.88.
To compare, Krispy Kreme was $14.94 for six, King’s in Concord was $7.50 for six (including bars), and although they say you can get six at Donut King for $9.50, we paid $11.88 for six.
As far as the taste goes, these were traditional donuts, and they were very good. The bars were a little crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, but they could have used more frosting. The bars were huge, so we’re not surprised they cost a little more.
They’re not quite on the same level as King’s in Concord (just our opinion), but they’re much, much better than Krispy Kreme.
If you live in or around Pleasant Hill, we recommend a visit, but get there early, and bring cash.
CLAYCORD DONUT WARS SCORECARD (donut holes = stars):
- Donut King in Pleasant Hill gets 3 out of 5 donut holes
- King’s in Concord gets 4 out of 5 donut holes.
- Krispy Kreme in Concord gets 1.5 out of 5 donut holes.
OVERALL LEADER = KING’S IN CONCORD
(ratings are based on location, customer service, cost, selection, taste of donut, extras)
The Claycord Donut Wars will continue next week.

Can’t forget Happy Doughnuts on 1900 monument Blvd Been going there since I was a kid.
in my humble opinion, just about anyone’s donuts are better than kripsy creams
I remember when Krispy Kreme became a thing in the area and someone brought a box of them to a get-together and I think they were anything special. But then I’m not a big donut eater anyway. I’m more likely to get an apple fritter at a donut shop but most of this stuff to way too sweet anymore.
OK, “didn’t think”.
.
Please do a comparison with Safeway’s donuts.
.
Safeways donuts suck. End of review.
Please consider good to the best little donut shop who contributes so much to Concord’s homeless population .#graciousowners #freedonutholes
One reason they might cost more is because the rent in Pleasant Hill might be higher than the rent in Concord. Another thing, instead of comparing the donuts by the dozen, weigh them, and compare them by the pound. Everybody knows Krispy Kreme’s donuts are smaller.
Krispy Kreme😖😖😖yuk. Donut King in Concord All around friggin magical👍👍👍👍😊😊😊😊😊😊❗❗❗❗
I’ll take ALL STAR on treat over any of these.. so fresh.
You guys missed the best, chicks donuts are top dog by far, there glazed and sugar donuts are top notch as is the bars.. how can you not include them…
I love Chicks and our family has been going there for over 30 years. But their doughnuts pale in comparison to Doughnut King in PH.
Even grocery stores make better donuts than Krispy Kreme. Just sayin… but all hale to those who get up early to fry dough.
The only reason Krispy cream got popular right off the bat like it did was because they made them and you could watch the process and eat warm donuts, yummy! I’ve not tried the others as I’m a night owl and most all donut shops are closed by the time I get out and about. I’m not that picky, warm sweet and melt in you mouth? Can’t beat it in my opinion but I haven’t tried the others.
Donut King has the BEST Apple Fritters I’ve ever had, anywhere! They set the bar and few come close.
Chicks is the best. Hands down. The glazed raised and buttermilk bars are like 2 donuts in one.
I have tried all donut stores in the region…about 6 or 8 of them. Best hands down is Great Donuts in Alamo. No joke.
Ben said, “I’ll take ALL STAR on treat over any of these.. so fresh.” I can’t agree more. My job always makes me get the donuts because they want All Star. It’s just that much better. Owner has closed this week for an operation but please give it a try next year.
Anyone like the Hostess powdered donettes? Available at the grocery store.
Donut King is actually the best, you guys are tripping. Sweet family that owns it, quality is impeccable, best crullers ever. Truly the best.
