Another flaring event occurred at the Martinez Refining Company on Pacheco Blvd. this evening.

The incident occurred just after 9 p.m.

The refinery says they experienced a power dip that caused a brief flaring event at the refinery. The cause of the electrical disruption is under investigation, and the refinery operations are stable.

The Contra Costa Health Department says there is no imminent health risk to the community at this time.

“We apologize for impacting some of our neighbors and thank our employees who safely responded,” the refinery said.

“Flares are an essential part of a refinery’s integrated, engineered safety systems. Flares are designed to safely manage excess combustible gases, by burning them off efficiently and effectively,” according to the refinery.

I don’t remember this many “events” when Shell owned the refinery….just sayin’

‘The flare is just a safety feature bro!!’

I never understood this defense. Your airbag in your car is a safety feature also but you don’t want it going off everyday. Flare might be a safety system for last resort emergencies but what does it say about how the refinery is being run if the ‘safety system’ is going off so frequently?

I thought it was the great and powerful OZ!
I for one am relieved it was only a controlled flaring event.
Phew!

3 incidents in under a month. Is this company capable of safely managing the refinery?

I thought this was a spare the flare day.

Your car brakes are also a safety features, so are your seatbelts … but you use those every time you drive a vehicle. I would hope my car safety feature would work when I need them too, much like I am glad that the flaring safety feature works at the refinery instead of it not working and releasing chemicals.

Especially at this time of the year, I have to use my safety feature brakes more often because of the people in a rush blindly driving around for last minute gifts while looking at their phones. I don’t complain about my safety feature working, I complain about the stupid drivers that cause me to use my safety feature.

And are you and Jimmy Kai related? The same unique analogy … seems a bit odd wouldn’t you say?

.
Maybe the City of Martinez should take over operation of the refinery.
