A short video is circulating around the internet allegedly showing rats inside The Dead Fish restaurant in the Town of Crockett (see below).

The Dead Fish responded on Facebook with the following message:
The Dead Fish restaurant is aware of the situation and video being circulated.
With the weeklong dredging at the waterfront below, pulling up old lumber pilings, boats etc., the homeless encampment below the restaurant, winter landscaping of cutting back shrubs and trees, along with roof work the day prior, caused this one-time occurrence. We do not have rats.
There are exterminators on contract as well as regular county health inspections we must pass. it’s all done regularly and we recently passed our inspection.
For any restaurant near water…something like this could happen.. and usually has to deal with these issues.
We honor anyone wishing to view our recent county inspection certificate or the restaurant, please call us to make appt.
The restaurant hasn’t been closed by the Contra Costa County Environmental Health Department, and the last few health inspection reports show they haven’t had a problem with any type of animals inside the restaurant.
Their last inspection was on Nov.29, 2022.
So why didn’t the roach checkers close them down? They do every place that is seen with critters.
I’d still go eat there. Things happen.
I can’t imagine running a restaurant these days. They would practically have to be hermetically sealed!
Plus, you have to pay the county health fee (hundreds annually) and deal with the inspectors every 6 months. They walk in like they own your business and let you know they’re doing an inspection. At times, they can really be assholes. Mostly, they have to write you up for” something” otherwise the boss wouldn’t be happy.
Been there, done that.
BLAME IT ON THE HOMELESS !!
yeah ooooKAY
hahah, yeah. One time. If you see one rat, you don’t see the dozens of others.
Also, whoever wrote this response from the restaurant should be reprimanded. Leave the part about “the homeless encampment below the restaurant” out. Unnecessary and off-putting information about where you’re dining.
No it’s not! THINK! The homeless encampment would have food out that would attract animal.
It is totally necessary to point that out. The homeless bring filth and the cities are letting them camp out when they don’t belong. People should be much madder about this, as they bring so much selfish destruction with them.
.
I managed the development of a six-lot subdivision where the one-acre lot was full of ivy around an old home and several outbuildings.
.
When the structures were demolished and ivy cleared, a gazillion rats fled into the adjacent single-family properties. It was (privately) hilarious!
.
And yes, I hired a rodent abatement company to set traps and such. You could say it was a bloodbath of rats n mice.
Had this happen next to my apartment complex that I lived in many years ago. My cat was a good ratter and brought one home every day for a month. Unfortunately, he didn’t always kill them first. After that month, we never saw another rat.
I had a short-term girlfriend in my 20s whose cat used to eat the whole mouse or rat except the head. The cat would leave it’s head on her bedroom pillow like a little cat present. Pretty gross to wake up and have a rat head staring back at you. Many a joke could be made from this comment, sorry Greta where ever you are.
.
I had an outdoor cat that would eat the front half or the back half – never the whole thing.
.
My back patio usually looked like a crime scene.
.
Oh the wornderful world of animals.
@Those are known as “Trophies” in “catspeak.” Only their favorite people get them!
Maybe the cat was in the mafia.
I can understand how that happened. I wouldn’t abandon the restaurant. Maybe they should close the patio door for awhile.
Rats are clearly a health hazard. No debate necessary. Obviously it must be stopped, the restaurant must be cleared and sanitized even it it was USPH clean from the start,
Before seeing the video, I read the headline and these thoughts occurred to me.
It’s a clean, popular restaurant. After so many years of service, rats haven’t been a problem to my knowledge.
Next, I know the area well. Rats exist along the shoreline below in a marine environment. I know this from fishing on the opposite shore. It’s why ships must put up rat guards on their moorings.
Next thought: If rats were found in the kitchen or in the restaurant, especially at night after hours when no people were around, then I’d say the restaurant has chronic hygiene a serious problem.
But if suddenly entering through some other means like overhead, could it be that something else is happening here?
I watched the video. Rats overhead is fairly telling of roof entry.
Based on everything the owners claim, it doesn’t mean the restaurant is dirty — except now — from the presence of rats.
Guessing 1. Recent cold temperatures – rats like mice are seeking shelter 2. Dock work 3. A freaking homeless encampment and 4. The restaurant is a stand alone structure – the one place the fleeing rats would come across up there.
I do hope the problem is permanently resolved and that he restaurant doesn’t die. It survived Covid. Could it be that the Covid episode of closure availed an unoccupied structure for rats to take nest? 🤔
Let’s hope this gets resolved without too much damage to reputation. It’s a pleasant place with good food and a nice bar.
Rats and mice do not like high frequency sounds like many of the rodent repellers make. Too them it’s someone running their fingernails on a blackboard. And the devices are cheap too. Put some around the place. The customers can’t hear them.
@Captain Bebops – Rats and mice quickly get used to the sound and then ignore it. Ultrasonic devices also tend to attract mosquitos, something you don’t want with West Nile being prevalent.
That was solved by randomizing the output frequencies so they can’t become accustom to it. I don’t see many mosquitos even outdoors around here so the county or my neighbors bug lamp is doing a good job.
They definitely work! I know from experience’
Is the Ratatouille fresh asked the customer. It the freshest you will ever have had replied the sever.
When I was a young man I was tending bar at a local bar/restaurant and noticed we had a mouse problem. I brought 6 mousetraps in one night and caught 22 mice in 8 hours. Traps were snapping all night. I had the problem pretty much gone in two weeks. Convinced the boss to hire a regular exterminator for keeping them from getting that bad again.
The Dead Fish used to be Vera’s Valona, the best cioppino around, hands down. I think they baked their own sourdough bread onsite too.
You never went away hungry there with their multicourse meal. It was the Italian Way
Maybe a name change should be in order after they eradicate the rats. How about… Dead Rat
That’s funny Wizard. Except we don’t know if they are dead yet.
If we need to really get rid of rats, I would say start at the CA state legislature.
I love crab and seafood and steak but never was a fan of their limited menu. Not a fan of rats either
I’m with SCHMEE on this one! And ….. their lunches are WAY Over-Priced !$!?
I’ve had three of these devices from Sunbeam for several years. They certainly solved a problem created, unfortunately, by having bird feeders in the yard, which eventually caused the mice to make entry to the house. After sealing up all the entry points, I installed the devices and haven’t had a problem since. And, they aren’t expensive. They plug into a socket and are about 3″ by 3″. I found the mice were traveling primarily on hot and cold water pipes. It was their “raceway” of sorts which ultimately provided them entry to the floor vents for the heater. It was arduous getting it under control, but because it is so dry this year, there is little for any if these creatures to eat or drink and they are being forced into places they wouldn’t ordinarily go. This might be expected … even anticipated … in a drought year. We used to have Red Tailed Hawks and Kites in the area that took care of it, but they moved on.
There haven’t been any mosquitoes around here since … forever. But, the small, plug-in rodent repellent from Sunbeam definitely works. I have three of them on duty at all times.
I have the Victor ones which came 3 to a package and are also nightlights. I also took an MP3 file with about 4 hours of a repellent sound which would loop and ran it with my surround system. Figured if there were any rodents under my house that would send them scurrying away probably right into the claws of the neighborhood cats. There are also phone apps that you can use to test to see if the devices are working.
They were closed on Friday and reopen on Saturday for service.
Hate to tell you but if you see 2 rats there are probably at least a 100 more. No such thing as only a few. Hope you can get under control soon so you can stay in business.
